A little clarification is necessary. While held in early 1973, this is for best picture of 1972, ie. The Godfather. The Best Picture of 1973 was The Sting.
Was perhaps not needed.
He's 90 now and still kickin'. Wow.
My Dad, too! (No relation to Mr. Eastwood.)
@@joedellaselva1251 hope your dad is well. One of my favorite customers back in the day was this 98 year old man who came in often, I thought he was 70 MAX, and a good looking 70 year old at that. One day he mentioned he was 98 and I just waved it off as a joke. Then he pulled out his ID to prove it. Blew my mind and really made me want to take care of myself, this is off topic but just wanted to mention it
One of the most deserved wins of all time for one of the most UNdeserved winners of all time
Still, "Best Picture" of that year to this date. Great selection of films.
Albert S. Ruddy - RIP
The Offer brought me here (partly because they didn’t show the speech in the show). ;)
brought me here too. Great show!
Came here after watching “The Offer!”
Saw this after watching “the offer”
The Godfather is the greatest movie ever made in the history of cinema!
No movies has ever deserved as much as the godfather did.
Those were the times of good music, acting, fashion, style and charm ... of living in general, when an amateur was a class.
Now are hard times for all of the above
I frickin' love the set design for this Oscar's telecast...time to go back to this smart ass minimalism.
+Autostade67 hell yeah minimalism ftw
Just passed the last week watching the Godfather Triology for the first time (at 44). Why I waited so long I’ll never know!
When Mario Puzo's novel was first published in USSR in the second half of 1980s I read it all in two or three days (actually, evenings - nights)... It was such a page turner. My Dear Mama gave me this magazine to read... Mia MAMA... Mia Cara Cara MAMA
RIP Mr. Ruddy for your part in changing cinema history
Miles Teller now playing Al in The Offer. Crazy behind the scene shenanigans.
Clint dont mess with me eastwood
Only man who ever looked good in a poncho
I guess this was a surprise win? Cabaret won 8 Oscars that night and The Godfather won 2, before Eastwood announced the winner. And back in those days, when your movie won most of the awards, it meant your movie gonna get the big one as well. Well, most of the time.
Longtime pundits and historians of the day felt the two pictures were separated by just a few votes. Hedda Hopper, a still, at the time, powerful columnist for The Los Angeles Times, said as much.
the jab at Marlon Brando has been noted o_O
+judacia
Way to go Clint , loved it.
Ikr
where was the jab?
hislord1 Brando sent an American Indian on stage to accept his award for a good message about the status of Indian tribes and people began to boo etc. so Eastwood made a joke if he should be onstage accepting an award for all the cowboys shot in western movies
Angellee Hayes- Yeah, but didn't it turn out that the young woman wasn't even a Native American? I believe that was the case. Oh well... Only in Hollyweird... lol!
Clint Eastwood should read out every nomination, he makes the whole thing so tense!
Yeah "Go ahead, flip the card man...I'm still here..." what with that eyebrow thing he does too! Imagine if the only presenters were Clint, John Wayne & Charles Bronson...nobody would dare fucking dispute their announcements of the winners. And Jack Palance & Robert Mitchum as the stage ushers/security
ViceCityVacation I think with those guys presenting the winner would just say "Keep it." because they'd be too afraid to accept it.
I like the way Clint announced this. Perfect. His timing and presence.
He can barely read! He is struggling to read the manual auto cue and tripping over his words. Its no wonder he's such a mediocre actor.
@@bkavanaugh863 Bollocks. Stuttering over the auto cue.
The Godfather is a masterpiece
Here is how I rank the 1970s' five Best Picture films:
5. "Patton"
4. "Kramer Vs Kramer"
3. "The Deer Hunter"
2. "The Godfather"
1. "The Godfather: Part II"
All agree except Kramer 🤮
Why do you think "Kramer Vs Kramer" (1979) is an awful movie NHMO OYTIS?
@@smit4459 it’s not AWFUL but it’s not in the same league as the others, few now even remember it. Hoffman was playing Hoffman and Streep playing a variation on characters she’s played before. And I personally couldn’t give a fat crap for divorce tales on or off screen. Don’t get married or commit to make your marriage work. In any case I dowanna hear about it.
I'm here after I finished the best TV Series of 2022, The Offer 🔥
LOL i guess back then they didn't have much creativity for the staging..
True, they reserved it for their films.
Sorry, Clint, but tthose "cowboys" in movies were just actors pretending to die unlike the real situation in Wounded Knee at the time and with natives in general
"At the time?"
You mean, during the AIM Insurrection at Wounded Knee in '73?
Agreed.
It was just a joke.
"The Godfather" is my favourite movie.
Sergio Ramón Rodríguez Cajiga Mine too.
Me too
Don't forget about Mario puzzo, the author of the godfather __ if it wasn't for him writing the book we would have the movies. Thankyou mr.puzzo.
Just saw this movie for the first time today!
Masterpiece!
You can see why so many American boys looked up to this man: "this is the way to be one" = Clint of Eastwood!!
0:33 He just dissed Sacheen Littlefeather SMH
R.I.P. Albert S. Ruddy 💔🪦
We remember Brando, too.
here because of The Offer
"I'll make you an offer you can't refuse."
And the Oscar goes to...
If 50% of of the incidents, which "The Offer" portrayed for what this guy has been through, have actually been happened, then we can easily say that Albert is a hero for all filmmakers out there.
Fun fact 1: Ruddy's win for The Godfather was the last time that a single person won the Best Picture Oscar as a producer, every year since it's been a team of people because it's like doing 4-5 jobs at once, from pre-production planning through to marketing and distribution.
Fun fact 2: Ruddy's Canadian.
This film wouldn't even be nominated after the latest inclusion requirements for best picture nominees.
@Markus RER Always has been.
What inclusion requirements?
Probably the most deserved oscars of all time
I remember that night. I thought CABARET was primed toi pull off an astounding upset -- but thank God, no. THE GODFATHER is a masterpiece for all time.
An Oscar doesn't make the film, but I understand what you mean. Look at the staying power of Shawshank Redemption. It has definitely stood the test of time.
Yeah, the Oscars, always partial to musicals that nobody would revisit in 15 years.
@@sauron2000000 idk don’t get me wrong Godfather was the clear best picture, but cabaret is still awesome and probably a top 100 American film of the 20th century.
Western movie directors.. .. John Sturges. Raoul Walsh. Howard Hawks. John Ford. Sam peckinpah. Anthony Mann Sergio Leone Leonard Katzman Richard Brooks Stanley Kubrick George Stevens
0:09 Oopps my bad I dropped Brando's Oscar by mistake. Sorry for the noise 😰
How can this NOT be considered the greatest movie in history? It's hard to believe that this film won a mere THREE awards!
Because it had stiff competition with Cabaret and Bob Fosse doing an excellent job with it. Maybe not on the level of The Godfather but it certainly gave it competition
One of the greatest movies of all time and when it wins one, guy gets up to get the Oscar. Today when a movie wins best picture twenty people get on stage and get an Oscar.
Marlon Brando did a great deal of real work, using money and time to promote and fight for Indian causes (all are on records). In fact, his protest did have an impact on westerns--no longer Indians are portrayed as one-dimensional savages It is easy to speculate another scenario--such as what he should have done. But why MB had to follow your approach or meet your expectation? Even his frustration for acting, since it was sincere, he was entitled to speak his mind.
First time I've watched this. I just loved the "OK. Whatever what that was, the scene is still intact, I don't hear anyone screaming, so I will just go on" look on Rock Hudson's face.
great intro speech Clint..........The Godfather.....greatest movie of all time
Not sure what's worse, the comb over or the tux.
It’s still the best film that was ever produced in the history
4:00..:D Clint Eastwood knocked over some lighting equiptment.
Interviewer Von Artista where?
@@JD-pz3zk 0:08 haha
haha i guess so 😂
Clint looks great. It sucks getting old.
your speech gives me goosebumps even in 2020!! Thank you for this amazing film!!!!
I swear every timeless classic that has won best picture has had clint eastwood presenting
Watch the Offer Ruddy had his back the whole way
Efsane adamlar hiç bir zaman unutulmayacak. Sende efsanelerin başında gelen aktörsün. Western filmlere aşık olmamı sağlayan adamsın.
0:11 Rock Hudson: (to self) quick, think of something funny to say, think of something... (crickets)
Ruddy's speech was very good and from the heart..
This completely undercuts the argument that recent Oscar Award Shows were bad and that the past ones were better. Yawn.
Oscar productions are shit, period. Self congratulatory schmaltz and pomp.
@@philophilesapiens7700 Yup. Left or right. FUCK THE OSCARS. That's why I love Brando. A man of principles who rejected the oscars. FUCK ALL THE ACTORS WHO ATTEND THE OSCARS with their fake humanitarian BS.
It's always nice to see clips from ancient history, when films didn't have 27 producers. Mr. Ruddy's thank-you list was, as others have pointed out, centered on those who provided the money. Though he mentions audiences, he doesn't recognize that no one goes to the movies to see a pile of $100 bills that reaches to the moon, necessary though they may be, but to admire and be entertained by the efforts of the creative artists.
Eastwood, Jackman or Lincoln?
They got this right ✅
I finally saw Cabaret. She deserved it. It was one of the best performances ever. She was so good I fell in love with her. I wish she was still up and able.
