    Ma'am according to Cl.26.5.11 of IS 456 In any column that has a larger cross-sectional area than that required to support the load the minimum percentage of steel shall be based upon the area of concrete required to resist the direct stress and not upon the actual area.
    But why in 2nd problem, you have provided Ast. according to the provided cross section (i.e. 500x500mm)?

    mam, how to assume pt as 1.2%. In which criteria should we assume, whether according to load or length of column??? Plz clearify

      It is rule by IS:456-2000, pt values should not be less than 0.8% and not more than 6%.
      We can assume any value between them and check the design.By practice you can get Idea which will safe.
