O.K. Corral Shootout 140 Anniversary with Bob Boze Bell

- Bob Boze Bell made his way back to Tombstone for the 140th anniversary of the Shootout at the OK Corral on October 26th.
“I just love it there,” says Bell. “I’ve been there every year, including the centennial of the fight, 125th, and all the years in between.”
What is it about the wild west that has fascinated him all these years? Bell’s grandmother used to talk about how his family was related to outlaws, and that peaked his interest.
He remembers watching "The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp" as a young boy at his grandmother’s house when one day she pointed her finger and said “Wyatt Earp was the biggest jerk who ever walked the west.”
That was the moment that ignited it all, the spark that led to his love for the wild west, and especially his passion for Tombstone.
“I was 9 years old and my mother would go in to get prescriptions filled and I would run to the front of the store and buy the latest of True West Magazine because it told the true stories of the wild west.”
In this impromptu talk at the OK Corral Theater, Bell recounts the time he spent as a kid that led to his fascination with the Wild West and his journey to buying True West Magazine.
Bob Boze Bell is known as America's Western Storyteller. He is an artist, author, writer and serves as executive editor of True West magazine. Bell is a popular, sought-after figure in television documentaries about the Old West, appearing as an expert in dozens of Wild West history shows. Bell won an Emmy Award as Executive Producer of the PBS special, Outrageous Arizona, a zany look at the state's centennial, that he also wrote and helped direct. As an author, Bell has brought to life Billy the Kid, Geronimo, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickok in his best-selling Illustrated Life and Times series. His books Classic Gunfights I, II and III are must-reads about the most important Old West gunfights. Hey, Bob! I'm a fellow Arizonan (even though I've lived over half my life in Ohio). Grew up in Sierra Vista, just 18 miles from Tombstone. My father was a Civil Service pharmacist on the adjacent army post Fort Huachuca but worked an occasional Saturday in Tombstone's sole drug store so the proprietor could have a day off. Tombstone definitely wasn't the tourist trap it is today. The first time he did so, around noon Dad took a break to get a bit to eat but the restaurants were ... closed for lunch! Anyway, I recognize most of the places you mentioned. Thanks for the memories.

True West my maternal grandfather had a stack of those dating back to the 1950's. I lived half the time growing up with him and my grandmother sometimes on a ranch or farm and mostly a small town in the Gyp Hills! Back then no cable and only one tv station! So I bet I read them about 10 times each especially when weather stopped me going to library or fishing! My two of three favorite hobbies with TRUE WEST the third! Thanks to Bob Boze Bell for keeping those memories alive!

WOW!! My wife and I were there last year at the O.K Corral at that exact time! I had plan the trip to Tombstone so we could be there on that anniversary!! 140 years ago at 2:30 in the afternoon! Book a room at the Larian Motel weeks in advance! Love the history of Tombstone!

I have long been a fan of western history and grew up in the heyday of the TV westerns. For many years Bob has presented lots of well-researched information about the old west. His enthusiasm and animation when telling his stories bring the western scenes back to life for me. I was in Tombstone once when I was 14. That was in 1965 well before the town became a real tourist attraction. I hope to return once again before I sign off. Thanks, Bob for all of your stories.

I grew up in Oklahoma and I’m a real cowboy in my heart and drove cattle up the real Chisholm Trail. So naturally I liked western history and Arizona is full if it just like Oklahoma, I had no idea Oklahoma had so many Outlaws.
His movie and paintings of Route 66 at The Powerhouse in Kingman are awesome!

I loved listening to this, thank you Bob! I have always been a fan of the old west. My grandfather had a gun belt on me and on a rocking horse before I could sit up by myself.
My wife and I became friends with Wyatt(great grand nephew) back in 2004 when we met him on Whiskey Row at the Palace Saloon. We’ve been friends ever since, and I enjoy reading or listening to everything about that famous gunfight. I enjoy the True West immensely, keep up the great work!
Bob, your grandmother was more correct than the t.v. because t.v. was sold as an entertainment devise. "True West" magazine is the best magazine for the " details" of events that happened in the west. It is my "go to" magazine for historical information on the old west.
I hope to visit Tombstone some day, such a historical site.

Really enjoy Bob's stories and Magazine and his videos as well. My Paternal Grandmother's Father and Wyatt Earp shared a Great Grandfather. I remember her saying that Wyatt Earp was a "Bad Man" and he was not discussed in polite company. Bob"s Grandma and my Grandma would Im sure have seen eye to eye! Thanks for your stories and videos, and your Magazine.

The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp is still on channel 1488 on Samsung TV, I watch it just about every day. It also includes the Rifleman and the Cisco Kid. I'm 52 and they are the best shows!!

I just got back from Tombstone for Helldorado Days a couple weeks ago. Always an amazing time. I finally got dressed in period clothes on my third trip there

I was there for this and learned so much in a very short period of time from the master, Bob Boze Bell. Thanks for autographing my (your) Wyatt Earp book. I live close to Tombstone and drive there quite often, in fact I just got back a little bit ago. Today I walked the route the Earps and Doc Holliday took to the street fight and tried to imagine what they were thinking at the time. If you have the opportunity to visit Tombstone, do it.

In 2006 I spent a week with Kevin Costner on a night shoot of Mr. Brooks. He had his beautiful dog on the set with him. The dog's name Wyatt.
Fabulous.
i read interviews by the sister in laws, who hated Wyatt, and said they thought he was also a stage robber, etc., He rarely smiled, and was rude to a lot of people. I don't care, he still fascinates me. I wish John Ford filmed his conversations with Wyatt. He had all of the equipment, and didn't do a thing to preserve that part of history.

Bob "Full of Booze" Bell missed the great Tombstone event of 1881.
The big event that happened in Tombstone in 1881 was not the Gunfight at the OK Corral, but it was when Fatima " Little Egypt" began dancing at the Bird Cage Saloon. Fatima's bigger than life portrait still hangs in the Bird Gage Saloon.
Little Egypt created a national sensation when she danced at the great 1893 Chicago World Exposition. She went on to dance throughout Europe. Fatima's Middle Eastern style of dance was called by the US news media the " Hoochee- Coochee", but in France it was called " Danse du Ventre" ( dance of the belly).

Years after the OK Corral shootout. Wyatt Earp moved north to join the Idaho Gold Rush, and became a sheriff in a northern Idaho town.

This was personally fun for me because you showed the pic of Kathy and you. She was my 6th grade teacher at Moon Mountain. I grew up on your New Times article. I visited the ok corral 40 years ago. Y'all know what a cathouse is, right? Well the corral had a cat-BOOTH. A phone booth sized cathouse! Have no idea if it's still there.

Great video Bob!...I heard you mention Davil l Wolper appointment with destiny showdown at ok corral...my high school history teacher played that video for the class....it appears to have been filmed at the real ok corral and in the crystal palace saloon......it looked like they took the Fremont Street concrete block wall down to film that....it would be awesome if you could do a video about the making of that documentary.
Yes, they did take the wall down for the shoot. Unfortunately, they utilized the entire space which was about six times larger than the original open space.

I have been questioning a bunch of things about that movie and it's script. Maybe that's partially due to them firing the original director and redoing the script.

Much of what people think they know about the Gunfight at the OK Corral is due to the old adage, “history is written by the winners”.
Bob, I'd like to know more about Francis Miller the first Deputy US Marshal in the Indian Territory? What made her become a lawman and what happened to her? There seems to be very little about her.

Was Wyatt Earp really with Doc Holliday, I believe in Denver, at the sanitarium when Doc passed on from his tuberculosis. Of course

I have been a true avid lover of old west history for going on sixty years.
But I believe for me that my passion and fantasies for western law and the bad man especially were not tied in with any reality at all, but a passion for and an indulgence in a complete creation to facilitate some kind of escapism. I idolized and near worshiped a time and place and especially a people - who CERTAINLY WERE NOT nice folks, not by ANY stretch; they were people believe me you would sincerely hope to NEVER meet, let alone ever know. It was all some kind of emotional creation, - it must have filled some need. They were no doubt absolutely and patently truly horrible people. People that no doubt I would find as well as regard as absolutely reprehensible and downright truly unpleasant individuals - no question. So my question then is, - why in the world would I hold such truly loathsome individuals in such precious esteem ? My fantasies about these people and my idolizing was a COMPLETE fabrication. There was zero truth or realty to any of it. It's facinating to be sure. I would actually have day dreams about going back in time and place - like a child staring at the illustrations in a fairy tale book. Why would I do this ? I am embarassed,

The psychology is very stimulating - but the fantasies still are no less fun. What a dichotomy.
The Earps and Holliday never gave the Cowboys much of a chance. It's like giving a rattlesnake a chance. These were cattle rustling cold blooded killers and you never give these kinds of people much of a chance.
Schofield or Colt? I’ve read both opinions as to what Wyatt carried that day.
I'm pretty sure he wore a Colt. Reliability vs function? You can shoot a .45 Schofield through a Colt but not a .45 Colt through a Schofield.
An Appointment With Destiny: Showdown at OK Corral documentary clearly states that Kate Elder Holliday is married to "Doc" Holliday. Can anyone tell me if that is true and what documentation exists?
