I keep coming back to this film as one of my favourites. The music choice is great and the footage is top notch. Fun and looks an awesome adventure. Thanks guys!
Wow, guys, this is one of the finest bikepacking docs I have ever seen. Love the graphics and pictures. Love that it does not loose the spirit of being in the ride with them instead of super high end cinema productions.... Well Done!
Brilliant look at everything cycling in Japan can encompass, inc. typhoons! Well done and thanks for filming. If anyone is interested in a longer version of this adventure, check out the Japanese Odyssey. Those quiet mountain roads are unreal.
Just found this and what a gem! Chapeau to you all! A very well paced and edited film. Look forward to seeing more. (From a guy who lives and cycles in Japan.)
Great movie, love the colors and animations! Heading to Japan in 2020, will ride Tokyo - Sapporo. Is there a gpx or route from the ride, most of al interested in Matsumoto - Kofu - Mt Fuiji route. Thanks!
I hope you have an amazing time! Here is a link to the gpx files - You will want Days 8, 9 and 10 :) drive.google.com/open?id=1gMZKGrLHCM2Nus2wOmqJxxiw4Yn3v2JL
Love the vid. Many memories of Japan and cycling; buying a standard Japanese commuter bike to get around on. Her name was "Siri" :) As for the no helmets it was very strange for me to ride without one but never felt in peril and only saw a few "racers" with them. Inspired to go back and bike tour.
Hi, we don't unfortunately! We are currently in the process of putting together our next film from our Scottish Trip, so we'll be sure to get a bike check in for it!
This was a personal choice - mainly to cut down on bulk while touring and also to stay cool in the warmer weather. We did check the law in Japan and riding without a helmet is legal, so we made the choice to ride without them to keep our heads cool more than anything. Again, a personal choice.
Hey guys, great inspiration! I will do a similar tour as soon as it is possible to visit japan again. Until then I really need the song name at 13:12 . Have been rewatching the video a million times for that bit. Any details would be welcome :)
what i learned from being in Japan is 1. make sure you have a good roadbike/gravel bike and 2. When somebody offers you money to eat something it will hurt hahah
Hi lads what a super video. Makes me glad to have bought my Restrap frame bag. Thanks for sharing such a well edited video of your ride. What were the stats for km, elevation & number of rice balls?
Found this little gem here in the depth of TH-cam. Great movie, lovely landscape, nice story. But why the f*ck is no one wearing a helmet? Doesn't make sense to me...
Nice video! Looks like you guys took a train from Osaka airport to town to start riding? Was it ok taking the train with a bike box? I am aware that the airport is quite a ways, but couldn't you just ride out of the airport? I'm planning on bringing my bike on my next trip to Japan, thank you!
That's right, we took the train to Osaka City Station from the Airport. It was easy. Looking on google we saw the only road from the airport to the mainland looked like a freeway with no cycleway, so we hauled the bike boxes onto the train. We didn't encounter any issues. You will need to do the same because apparently bikes need to be in a box or Rinko bag before they're allowed on a train.
What's the track that plays at the end? Excellent video and killer soundtrack. Definitely adding stuff to spotify while watching this but can't ID that last one.
Nice Film. Great experience. I hadn't thought though that roads in the super-rich and technological advanced Japan could be so catastrophic. I start to reconsider the "state of the roads" in Italy...
Nice one dudes. I'm flying to Tokyo with my bike 4th September to do some 2-3 day rides. Did you use Komoot for route planning and are you using Naturehike tents by any chance?
Hey John, I hope you have a great time. We actually did this trip before we knew about Komoot so this was all done at a dining table with a combination of Strava, Google earth and "connect the dots" attitude. Naturehike tents ftw.
I saw this comment before watching and was like come on mate, no one does a bike trip without a helmet, that would be irresponsible and stupid in such a arrogant way….yet here they are wearing caps…
Traffic in Japan was a mixed bag - people are courteous for the most part, the trucks and K Cars tend to give little room. Cities are crazy but countryside is totally fine.
@@Restrapltd Awesome, thanks for the reply dude ;) I was hoping to get out that way myself this year but I'll have to sit on that plan for a while. all the best
I appreciate it might seem like we just left him in the film but I'll write a bit more of a detailed synopsis of what happened. After riding past Mt Fuji, we ended up on an incredibly busy motorway type of road which we only carried on with because of the amount of road-cyclists also on it. We wanted to get off it as soon as possible so we were riding around 22mph in a line formation to clear it quickly. It was during this that Joe went off the back after a puncture while in a tunnel where we couldn't hear him shout. When we realised he was no longer with us we moved to the side of the road to wait imagining he had gotten a puncture or mechanical. After an hour we started stopping passing cyclists to ask them if they had seen anyone to match his description, absolutely none of them had. This made us think he had turned off the road. After looking at google maps for 10 minutes, we saw there were 20 turn-offs he could of taken.. all leading to different towns but then reconnecting with the road we were on, closer to our destination for the day. As he had no method of communication, we decided the best thing to do was to carry on to Hadano as he was no longer on the road we were following and he was likely waiting for us further down the route, maybe even at our destination. It was there that we contacted the police to search for him and he walked in moments later. The reason no one saw Joe who was cycling down the same road as us is because Joe thought it would be safer to climb over the road barrier and into some bushes to fix his puncture, which is where he was bitten and passed out. It was all very distressing losing our friend with no phone and waiting for him at different intervals for about 3-4 hours in total and we were just making group decisions based on what we could do. The moral of the story... always have a group meeting point, methods of communicating each other and a strong knowledge of where you are going for the day in case you end up getting separated.
@@Restrapltd Perhaps I should've been more specific, but I'm interested in your camping gear. Forgot the timestamp, but I saw that you guys set up a tent in a city out of everyone's way and I'm curious about which tents and sleeping bags you guys used for that climate
@@Fabian-ob2mh No worries at all! Our first night on the outskirts of Osaka was more because we originally went the wrong way (gps was set to navigate to beginning of the route which was at the airport, and we found out we had to get a train into the city in the first place). The tents we used were Naturehike Cloud up 2 and unless it was raining we only slept in the inner to keep a breeze flowing through. All our sleeping bags were different but I used a Snugpak Jungle Bag because of its built-in mosquito net and light-weight body. Also used a Sea to Summit sleeping mat. All of that and a down-jacket fit into the 14L Saddle Bag :)
Nice work! All the better for the lack of navel gazing. Did you have any sightings of the infamous Japanese hornet, they’re supposed to be fearsomely big. Cheers!
