    This was filmed at my school, in and around my neighborhood, and I was even an extra. It was just being part of the crowd but I was given free PB&J sandwiches and I got to watch these amazing BMXers ride that course all day. It was heaven.

    For those of us born in the 70s and grew up in the 80s, Rad was a movie that meant so much. As BMX freestyle was such a popular thing

    • @DrMurdercock
      @DrMurdercock 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I was born in 84 and bikes were still everything around 89-90. Doing "tricks on bikes" as we used to say back then, was LIFE!!! Then I discovered RAD and that was all she wrote. Thrashin' was the skateboard version. These 2 movies to this day are among my favorite movies.
      It bugs me to NO END that James Rolfe from CInemassacre (AVGN) always shits on RAD. It makes no sense, he is the right age to understand, maybe he grew up in a neighborhood where kids didn't get into bikes? LIke the ONE neighborhood in America?

      I'll agree with BMX Freestyling was huge at that time. But as an enthusiast I was disappointed with the movie. So did the majority of my friends. It focused on BMX racing rather than Freestyle completions. I appreciate it more today than I did then due to nostalgia.

    • @Yyyyyy5
      @Yyyyyy5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BMX freestyle was huge but only in places like California. There were no BMX groups in the Midwest and no such thing as X games either. All we had in the Midwest was our bikes and this movie.

    I've seen this movie over 150 times easy growing up. Going by my cousin's house with my bmx bike tied down in the trunk of my father's car started off some of my best childhood memories. You can't replace that. I feel sorry for the kids of the digital world, because the digital world takes away most of the magic for a child early in life in addition to kids making bonds that last a life time.

    The term “balls out” refers to governors on steam engines. The faster the engine went, these arms with balls at the end would get spun and lifted by centrifugal force. At the top of their reach, the engine would be “governed” from going any faster. At this point, with the arms stretched fully, the engine would be said to be going “balls out.”

    Thank you for making this video. I was very excited to see the film in theaters. The opening scene with all the Pro freestylers was amazing. I was blown away when I saw the film. After seeing the movie I built a really cool GT Pro performer bike. Later I built a chrome Haro Master. I got into doing the basic tricks. I started going to BMX shows when the different BMX companies would go on tour in the summer. GT, Haro, Hutch, And Redline. Those were some fun times!

    I was 14 when this movie came out and had been learning Freestyle tricks for a couple of years, by then. I think it rang a little more familiar for me because my family also worked for the local newspaper and delivered them for some time, so I felt the bike/paperboy connection.
    At the time, the big names in BMX and Freestyle were like movie stars to the biking world. Eddie Fiola, R.L. Osborn and Ron Wilkerson were huge in the Freestyle world.
    They would go on nationwide tours and do exhibition shows at all the big bike shops. Jose Yanez had successfully done the very first backflip on a bicycle the year before. A couple of the big stars went on to start their own bike companies, such as Bob Haro.
    Those bikes were pricey, for sure. Hutches, Haros and Redlines easily sold for $800+ in the mid 80's. That's the equivalent to over $2230 today.
    My family wasn't exactly rich. I worked odd jobs and bought a white Schwinn Predator Freestyle for $250. (equivalent to about $800 today) I then proceeded to change nearly everything on the bike. The only original parts were the rims, frame and forks. By the time I was done, I was left with a white frame and rims with all lavender accessories. Even the tires were lavender.
    My father absolutely hated it. lol
    That bike got stolen twice but it was so easily recognizable, I got it back both times.
    So, as far as the movie, it was the only thing we had; but even back then, we all agreed it was cheesy and poorly produced. Of course, my friends and I watched it multiple times but it eventually lost its luster.
    I can't believe it actually made it to a blu-ray release.

      I had a black Predator, that got stolen…by my dope head mother. She traded it for meth when I was 11. She swore it got stolen, but you couldn’t see it from the road and the entire neighborhood was afraid of my stepdad.

    I don't care what the critics say, "Rad" is one of the greatest movies to ever grace the silver screen. Simply, not enough can be said about it. The characters, including the stunning Lori Loughlin, the plot, and the incredible BMX riding/racing are like no other. All young people need to watch this movie to learn what the 80's were all about and how awesome they were!
