  • Apparently, Gabbie and I love to chat all things health. So much so that we ended up getting two great videos from our ask doctor mike recording session. This is 27 minutes long but I felt wrong to cut anything out of it as it all seemed relevant and important.
    This video is almost a completely unedited conversation we had when we first sat down to record the original Ask Doctor Mike video you saw a few weeks ago. We discuss the rise of anxiety and depression as well as some of the inaccurate portrayal of mental health currently in media. If you have comments or questions based on this video please do drop them down below so that I can address them.
    Please Follow The Gabbie Show and be on the lookout for her Vegan video that we collabed on as well!!!

    If you or a loved one is in immediate danger calling 911 and talking with police may be necessary. It is important to notify the operator that it is a psychiatric emergency and ask for an officer trained in crisis intervention or trained to assist people experiencing a psychiatric emergency.

    Thank God for a doctor who actually pays attention to the fact that your mental health and physical health are connected and who actually just spends time talking to patients about it instead of just pushing medications.

      I understand your point about listening to patients, it is extremely important to address ones mental health however, medication is at times needed regardless of how one feels. IE Morphine for brutal wounds, Painkillers for burn victims, etc. Narcotics have a time and a place just as much as mental solutions like CBT. You need both in a real crisis

      Dalila Hajfani About the narcissistic personality disorder, really? Can’t rewatch at the moment, but all I remember him saying about it was just commenting on the general misconception/confusion of characteristics and a criteria-defined disorder....as well as the reality that many people display traits which fulfill one or a few criteria for disorders without sufficiently fulfilling the extent to which they would be diagnosed as actually having the disorder. Both of which points are accurate and extremely useful to acknowledge

      I’ve dealt with doctors that had years of experience under their belt and were completely wrong. Just because someone has a degree and experience doesn’t mean they are automatically right and never wrong no matter what. It’s really really really dumb to assume someone knows everything about everything. No one can ever know everything about everything. 😒 I’m in my 20s and I know this.

    • @MusicalK93
      @MusicalK93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      @@kimecosx I never said Dr Mike (or any Dr) was always right. Obviously they aren't, they're human. It is extremely rude to call someone "really dumb", you could really hurt someone by insulting them like that when you know nothing about them. In this video, Gabbie was talking as if she knew what she was talking about when she clearly didn't, and I was just saying Dr Mike handled the situation well.

      Well yeah there’s that, but what the main comment was pointing out was the fact that Gabbie interrupted Dr. Mike several times.
      Some of what he was trying to say, before Gabbie interrupted him, were obvious and good points of what should be shared in psychology, regardless of the experience. Of course, the more experience you have at something, the more in-depth you can go, which is what Dr. Mike mainly does when he tries to explain a piece of information, but again with Gabbie, she barely gave Dr. Mike that chance.
      Although experience doesn’t make you the higher authority, it does make you someone worth listening to.

      @@selksea3656 what was confusing about what I said? If you understand what was said then why the need to emphasize what i already understood? As an Asian person (Filipinos are Asians too, lol), it was hard for me to admit that I had depression to my family. Because it's not talked about in the Asian community as much. But we all know that the pressure of being a child of an immigrant, or a child of an Asian parent puts a lot of pressure on us. It's because they want to realize their dream of being successful on us, or they don't want us to suffer the same sacrifices they went through all their lives. They all thought I would be a doctor, but I'm not. I haven't even finished my B.S even though I started college back in 2011. Why? Because the classes were too hard for me. It got so bad that I blew up one night because my mom was nagging me and I just said: "I wanted to kill myself all summer long", but I couldn't do it. My whole family heard me and they consoled me throughout the night. They stepped back and they never mentioned once again if I want to go back to school or not. I went through therapy, but I found that the most helpful is to talk to my family about what I'm feeling and ask for help. Don't wait up until it's almost too late. Ask for help because asking for help lifts that burden. And when that's lifted, everything else will be easier to do.

      Neither are recognized as professional diagnoses anymore, and are both grouped under antisocial personality disorder; however, in this context, psychopathy is said to be a physical underdevelopment of the amygdala, which controls emotions, and the ability to care about consequences or feel empathy, often resulting in disorganized, aggressive behavior; sociopathy has similar lack of empathy or antisocial behavior, but is developed as a response to pervasive childhood trauma and response to an unhealthy environment, leading to higher functioning and the capacity to “chameleon” into societal norms and expectations.

      I don't like Doctor Mike's take on self-diagnosis because it misses this point. The potential problems with self-diagnosis aren't very relevant unless / until we understand and address the reasons why people rely on self-diagnosis. The answer to "are people doing the right thing?" doesn't matter unless we also ask "why are people doing this?"

      did you see my bag? I would (respectfully) disagree. I often talk about depression and anxiety in a sarcastic tone or whilst laughing, and whilst I know that that shows I’m comfortable with it, which is good, I think there is a certain strength in being able to let your guard down around people. In my opinion, everyone needs someone to let their emotions out around, and it’s good that you have someone. This is, however, just an opinion, and I can see why some would think otherwise: both sides of the argument are valid.

      When this topic was mentioned in the video, I instantly remembered a book, Stephen King's Pet Sematary from 1983, where this is brought up. A family mom always gets a cold if she has to attend a funeral. It seems to be a way of avoiding going to one due to a trauma from childhood. Her husband is a medical doctor, and suspects this. If I remember right, he knows her somatic symptoms are real but believes she has no clue that it's actually triggered by anxiety. I can't remember how that small storyline went in the book. It may have been completely forgotten later on because they get worse problems soon enough. Sometimes even popular fiction brings things like this up, as "far back" as 80's.

"You're crazy, you're on Prozac and other psych meds, you're in therapy..." so seeking help and letting people know then turns into being discredited and disregarded in almost every situation. You have to keep it to yourself or you're going to be mistreated and belittled for the rest of your life.

      I was never diagnosed with Tourette but as a child I had so many ticks, other kids used to make fun of me. In high school I used to repress my ticks and go tick out in the bathroom , I was so embarrassed it was terrible.. The summer after high school I went on a vacation with a friends family. At some point we were partying and I got drunk and I just straight up opened up to my friends mum and told her wtf was wrong with me and that I was having ticks. Surprise ! She knew what ticks were and had suffered from them earlier in her life ( I made her want to tick out bad 😅) but once we talked about it I was like "that was it ?" the thing I was so afraid to talk about all my life, everyone knew I had them but I never addressed it.. after that I told my friends which totally understood. I dated afterwards and once I got close to the girl I dated I explained what ticks were to her.. She was so understanding and loving and it made me wish I had opened up about my ticks a long time ago. Explaining helps to clear up misconceptions and confusion .. Btw I'm going to marry that girl next year , and I don't give a f If I'm so excited about my marriage that I'm going to tick out.. It's me and that's it 🤗😉👌

    Advocating the importance of mental health and having the courage to seek assistance can be so difficult. That in itself, seeking help, can usually cause anxiety. This stigma in our society unfortunately will never end. Acquainted or not, those around us depending on the circumstances may isolate themselves and/or possibly inflict pain to themselves.
    It will take a lot of time. But, I hope this and any other videos advocating mental health witll help society to acclimate. Especially, to assist those struggling to take a step forward and understand how important it is by seeking help.

    I completely agree that doctors are too quick to diagnose mental disorders, but as someone who suffers from autoimmune diseases and other chronic illnesses unrelated to my mental health, my diagnoses were delayed about 4 years because of this narrative that mental health is creating physical symptoms. A good example of this is my POTS-Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. So many doctors tried to tell me it was just anxiety; that it was all in my head; that I needed Cymbalta or another antidepressant; that my rapid heart rate was conditional to stress and anxiety attacks and not my upright standing. Eventually, referral after referral, I finally got a tilt table & was diagnosed properly. I never personally dealt with anxiety until I went through my diagnostic process. Having a doctor illegitimize your physical symptoms by claiming they have mental origins is just as detrimental to a patient’s physical and mental health. This isn’t to say that mental health doesn’t have physical symptoms, or that it’s not extremely important for doctors to identify/raise concern about, but doctors are so quick to deny testing or not listen to symptoms and concerns, because the easy route is to write it off as mental and avoid any testing that would prove otherwise. I understand there are studies that have shown this correlation of physical pain with mental health, but the chance is higher that there is a physical ailment at play.

      @LatinaSweetie44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agree!!!! Was going to write something similar!! I also suffer from autoimmune and chronic pain/illness. Late diagnoses by over 5 years because "oh it just stress. Oh just anxiety. Take these meds". 10 years and 15 different meds later it never helped. And I get talking about pain and mental health, but having been through the worst of it, I also can't dwell on it or I feel even more shitty if that makes sense.

    • @saraanderson9190
      @saraanderson9190 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      YES!!! I have POTS, too, in addition to several other chronic illnesses. It took me 5 to get diagnosed and figure out why I was fainting and hitting my head :/. In fact, it was 5 years before anyone even mentioned POTS. There were several doctors who brushed me off because I looked like a "healthy young woman." And maybe I did look like that, but I sure didn't feel like that. It's extremely irritating and made me want to almost stop seeking medical help at all when I needed it. But luckily, there are still good doctors around. It can just take some time and effort to weed through and find the good ones.

    • @shywolf4
      @shywolf4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      POTS stinks. I was actually diagnosed by my ear doctor. My pcp who is actually good with my rare EDS diagnosis had no clue why I kept getting dizzy and sent me to my ENT (ear doctor) thinking it was ear related. My ENT knew POTS was common in people with EDS and did a poor man's tilt table test to diagnosis my POTS.

    • @shywolf4
      @shywolf4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      THANK YOU for explaining the difference between symptoms and a disorder. Anxiety is tossed around so much that it is brushed off as nothing. My niece has an actual anxiety disorder that seriously impacts her life and her middle school keeps brushing it off like "all kids get anxious at this age". Or "She is overreacting she does not need to be anxious about this". No kidding. That is why she is diagnosed with an anxiety DISORDER, because it is not rational or in proportion to the situation. Just telling her to nit be anxious doesn't help. We finally had to bring her mental health provider to a meeting to explain the difference. And that just because she smiles at school does not mean she is happy. She is hiding it because she does not feel safe to express it at school.

    Have you ever thought about doing a video about anesthesia awareness?
    Like how often that kind of stuff happens and what happens if a patient tells you that they felt everything that you did while surgery?
    Do surgeons believe the patients or just ignore it? Like what would you do when a patient told you that?

      You gotta understand that that surgeons tend to be objective and only work on proof and evidence, if you know the amount of pre operative drugs that you are given in order to give you complete sense of nonexistence and amnesia you wouldnt believe it if someone told you oh i was aware during that, because it just doesnt make sense, specially while the EKG monitor is working and they can track your awareness levels.

      This topic sounds interesting, but just from the top of my mind. Wouldn’t the patient react to the doctor cutting them open?

    • @roniv4269
      @roniv4269 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DawiT
      anesthesia awareness is about your body being paralysed bc of the drugs they give you, but your mind, therefore you, still being conscious and still being able to feel everything they are doing to your body, but bc of the paralysis you’re under, you’re not able to move or do anything with your body to signal them that you are still conscious, so you can basically feel everything they’re doing during the operation. A lot of people who said that they’ve experienced this explained that it feels like torture and people have actually killed themselves after experiencing such an traumatic event.
      I‘m just really curious about how often those kind of things happen and how it’s treated by doctors

    My brother committed suicide a few months ago. One of the biggest reasons why he never saw someone (therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, etc.) was, and I quote, he "didn't want to know if there was something wrong with him". The stigma around labels is incredibly damaging and leads to real, horrifying consequences. I have severe ADHD, and we suspect that he had it as well (we believe that the main "trigger" for his suicide was doing badly in college).

    He touches on so many issues that are so point on like labelling and stigma attached to mental health , psychosomatic symptoms , doctors quick to prescribe medicines and not bothering to look at mental health aspect and even patients who would rather have some medicine and be anxiety or depression free rather than open up in some therapy . Medicines are okay , we need those but we need to change the faulty behaviour patterns too . As a clinical psychologist from India , we have deal with everything from stigma attached to visiting a therapist to being looked down upon by some psychiatrist . You end up thinking why would an educated person understand the importance when legit doctors can't . I really appreciate that he is giving mental health of patients a thought ! 😊

If it’s really bad, I’ll get a headache and all over body aches and occasionally feel dizzy too. It’s kind of awesome in an awful way that our brains are powerful enough to make us feel like we’re potentially going to die.

    So happy to see the conversation about emotional suppression causing back pain! I just recently stumbled onto this myself and after struggling with an immense amount of neck and back pain for 15 years and not seeing lasting results with the help of doctors, I am finally staring to feel better. A week after I saw, and read a book published on this, my therapist introduced the same concept from a slightly different angle and also included the vegus nerve and it has truly changed my world. I was taking several melatonin tablets before bed and would still toss and turn for 2 hrs when I only had 3 or 4 before I needed to be up. Simply taking deep breaths that specifically reach under my bellybutton now allow me to fall asleep almost immediately. My therapist explained that the breaths reaching under the bellybutton communicate to the brain that you are safe allowing your brain to feel safe with you going to sleep. I would love to see more on this. It can really change so many lives. Thank you Dr. Mike and Gabby, you're the best!!
    Edit - Just got to him mentioning the books I came across by Dr. Sarno!

      I was diagnosed with OCD when I was about 13 years old I want to say (don’t know if I was diagnosed earlier, but that’s about when I started taking medication for it) but started showing signs at about 8 years old. Now I can’t speak for every person that has OCD but my family has asked me if I’m trying to have an eating disorder because when I’m having an episode that lasts several weeks, I can go days without eating because I won’t get hungry. They start to say I’m losing weight and get really concerned because I’m not hungry. So there could possibly be a link between OCD and eating disorders.
