    Great vid! One tip for anyone wondering about their lightweight velcro bits like compression shorts/jocks, shin pad inners, etc- go get a "lingerie bag" or a wide mesh laundry bag to throw that stuff in after closing all the velcro. Will give you an extra layer of protection against your velcro snagging on stuff.

    I hang dry all of my equipment after each use to keep from building the nasty hockey player stench. I save those silica bags that come in the box when you buy electronics and stuff and keep them in my hockey bag as well.
    Get a pair nylons from your girlfriend or your mom, & put a few handfuls of rice in each one. Tie them off and place one in each skate to keep moisture from building in the boot. I do this for my motocross boots as well, and it works perfectly.
    The washing machine at my new place has a center agitator so I don't use it as it will beat up my gear too much; I only use it for the jock and socks. For the rest of the gear I use the bathtub to soak and then rinse them in. I also use a loofah and some body wash to scrub the pads. Then hang dry outside, or over some towels.
    Mouth guard and water bottle goes in the dishwasher.

    Heads up folks... very important part... a delicate cycle is a must. Just finished going through this process for the second time... first time went well, this time not so much. The machine shredded the upper part of the hockey pants after not paying attention to the delicate cycle. Actually thought about the delicate cycle at the moment, but left it thinking (out of memory) that in this video he only mentioned it protects the machine. After seeing the damage (soft pain in the heart, really enjoy hockey) came back here to see what was up. He covered his tracks, delicate cycle for the protection on both sides. Oh my pants... my first pair of pants...

    This video is quite old, but a couple of observations. 12:02 when he opens the washing machine. I had a Bosch front loader that had a door much like that. I ruined a few pieces of gear in it before I realized an issue you can have is the spin cycle ... if the gear can touch that clear plastic part as it spins, it will rub and create friction ... melting the nylon. I ruined two pairs of pants and a pair of gloves because of this. If you have a door like that, do not run a spin cycle ... let the gear wash, then pull it out and let it dry.
    That having been said, the best solution I have found overall is to buy a portable closet (search Amazon), and a Lasko floor fan. Put gear in closet, leave the front open, point fan at closet ... gear dries very quickly.

    excellent video, I have a similar problem that maybe you have the answer to. I am a juniors player who still loves my equipment from my teenage years and I refuse to replace some of my gear. But the padding is getting stiff when it dries out. what is the best way to make the bricks on my pads soft again or maybe not as stiff like sandpaper?

    I built a hockey stand out of pvc that has a place for all my gear and my skates as well. When I get home I take everything out of my bag and put it on the stand. I live in Florida in the US so it’s hot here 11.5 months out of the year so I have no issues lol.

    It also may be a good idea to put dryer sheets in a hockey bag and in your equipment to keep them fresh

    I washed my gear in the washing machine one time and on my hockey pants there was a cut in them from like a skate or something and I didn't notice. So when I washed it all of the foam from my breezers on that one side just spilled out and made a huge mess.

    I usually just put my hockey equipment on my trampoline in the backyard. It's fairly sunny where I live so I just let it dry out side.

    Hi mate the prevention is great. How do you get the smell out of equipment thats been stored for 5 years in the loft. I washed it but the sweat smell is still there. Moving forward i will take these points on. Hopefully i can remove the smell thats in my equipment somehow

    my son plays goalie youth hockey in NJ. I normally just take the equipment out of his goalie bag, spray alcohol in the helmet, glove, blocker, skates and inner part of the goalie pads - after every game and practice. Once a month, I wash whatever can fit in the washer/dryer. FYI - I put my son's chest protector in a large pillow case and/or washable bag in the washer.

    Oh my goodness, boys everywhere need to watch this and do it! Lucky here in Florida I have a pool so we can throw literally everything in the chlorine to disinfect & deodorize, including the whole skate (minding the blades of course)! Usually after I'll throw most of the gear in the wash and some air dry (gloves) some dryer (the rest) then febreeze or perfume depending on how girly I'd like to smell :p

    idk y people dry their pads out it's the best feeling when you put on ur stuff and it's like gel

  • @SliptreamSaint
    @SliptreamSaint 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just use a hockey tree and some shelves to lay my stuff out after each skate. I have a large fan that I aim at my equipment if I really need it to be dry fast. I wash my base layer, jersey, socks, and any other laundry after each skate when I get home. My base layer and jerseys air dry after on some hangers, usually good by the next day.
    The rocket dryer seems like a smart idea if you really have little space, probably best for guys living in college dorms. Otherwise, yes wash your gear every couple months if you are on the ice more than twice a week and you'll be good.

    I put all my gear except skates and helmet on a clothes horse. Helmet sits near a radiator not too close and skates get dried with a towel, tongue folded down and footbed removed then placed again near a radiator but not too close. Haven't had any problems with a smell.

    I usually just soak my goalie gear in a bathtub (minues the Leg pads, skates, and remove the helmet cage on the helmet), add some soap anything you'd like and add like a cup or 2 of vinegar to kill bacteria. I do this ALL the time, but Im just curious would this damage my goalie gear if I just put it in the washing machine?

    Would anyone happen to know an effective way to clean goalie gloves? I have gotten mine professionally cleaned, but they weren't very thorough, so my gloves still smell. Any useful tips would help.

    • @elephantman23
      @elephantman23 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hockey equipment will vary in price depending on whether or not you buy new or used equipment. If you buy new skates are $200 and upwards of $750-$1,000. Pants, shin pads, elbow pads, shoulder pads, helmet, socks and uniforms will fun another grand. $1,000 and up

    you could however just air everything out...... and a less snarky part. look up "Odor Gladiator" and stick it in your bag. it works really well if you air out your pads then put your pads and the odor gladiator in your bag and then close the bag up.
