Sounds like Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau had a rival... Helmut Lotti might be their modern day successor language-wise (he sings in like every language), though probably not skill-wise since he's not classically trained.
Officially, after listening to many tenors, my favorite one. He can sing so many ways and make the song he sings just beautiful. What a beauty he had as an artist and singer and not known as well as the other tenors. I love Pavarotti and Domingo etc... but I really love the class and the difference in color this man brought into the music he sang.

Two masters! Gedda's clear enunciation in the English language is most remarkable for an artist fluent in Russian, German, French etc,,,and a native of Sweden. A great performer,,,here with a most accomplished accompanist. Very many thanks for posting, you serve us well !

I have performed these Folk Song Arrangements by Britten, in fact Britten songs and history comprised a significant portion of my doctoral dissertation programs. Britten's arrangements and Purcell realisations make these styles so interesting and programmable when working with just a pianist in recital. Gerald Moore and Nicolai Gedda? Doesn't get any better than that, even considering Britten and Pears' performing these. Love it!! Thanks for finding and posting!!
Love Gedda and Moore. I also thought neither did his best with this piece, although Gedda surprised me with his diction and understanding of the style. There is a recording made in 1943 with Peter Pears and Britten himself accompanying , which was such a game-changer for me that I had to go back and learn to play it in the original key. I had memorized it over 50 years ago, when I was smitten with it at the tender age of 16 - I can't begin to say what it did to me at such an age. It is published in a "generic" and awkward key as are folksongs and standards. And since it presents no obvious technical challenge, I committed it to memory, in an adolescent attempt to keep it with me always. It worked. But when I heard it in the original key I heard a different piece. And so today I am listening to every recording I can find...

Of course opinions differ, but I love playing the Britten setting. Artful artlessness. BTW, "salley" means "willow". Compare Latin salix, Italian salce (You go, Desdemona) and of course, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). No need for aspirin when you're listening to Gedda.

Can't stand opera singers' renditions of folk songs, jazz, and the like but this is very useful to me since I have to do it as an audition number and these opera guys are sticklers for accuracy in scoring and lyrics. The version I got was full of errors. I had to go to the Yeats page to get the real deal.
Lovely performance, even though I would have hoped the singing be a little smoother, more sensitive. But for someone outside the Isles not a bad performance at all, I think. Especially when it's not his own language, singing classics in English can be tricky

Gedda's was a bit shy of legs to. And I agree with you on his style and diction, right down to English dipthongs. And that voice!!!

I love Gedda's version here. It reminds me of John McCormack and has the same enunciated diction that gives the song more sadness I think.
