It is. The issue is with taking it into court. Many times it's not worth hiring a lawyer and even if you do you still risk losing the case and have to pay your lawyer on top of that. A lot of times people just let it go. And then there's the actual case itself. You have to goto court and prove that the money is yours and wasn't using for illegal activities. The entire process is stacked against the victim.
That's your politician in the Federal position who pass this type of law. The only way is to complained to your representative in Congress and the Senate.
This needs to be exposed at all levels. Journalists should show up at airport and expose the people seizing money without probable cause. Maybe they should go as far as surrendering money under cover and report on legal process to get it back. Unfortunately the recipe to get targeted is pretty simple to figure out.

This is unethical at best, criminal at worst. They clearly wait until it's time to board the plane, then spring into action to seize your money. Note: Once you pass TSA search, you do NOT have to consent to another search by the DEA agents. They ask you for consent when boarding starts so you will just agree to not miss the flight. This was all described in another vid made by Atlantic Journal. TSA is likely notifying DEA when you pass through the security check. They should be forced to produce a warrant before search and seizure and that poor guy losing 90% of his money in legal fees just to get his money back is criminal.
This has been going on for decades all over the country. Not only at airports but on traffic stops by state and local enforcement everywhere. It’s part of their budgets. It’s taken this long for the media to notice.
About 25+ years ago, I was boarding a flight from Houston to Costa Rica. In the jet bridge from the terminal gate to the airplane, there were several uniformed officers (custom?) who were asking passengers if they were carrying cash. I didn't answer or acknowledge their question, but a young Costa Rican woman made the mistake of admitting that she was carrying a LARGE sum of US cash. I never saw her board the plane. I felt bad for her because she probably legally earned that money and was returning to Costa Rica to financially support her family. I knew she was going to lose all her money to the US government for simply being honest. After all these years, that still gets me MAD.

This why letting the government pass all types of laws without question is a mistake . People look down on groups that protest this types of government activities but at this is exactly why
Your first mistake was talking to any Federal agent while flying. They have no rights to detain you or search you or your bag. The only ones that can search your bag is TSA and that’s related to airport and flight security.
That's not true. CBP can stop and detain you. They do no not need your permission to search your bag if they scan it and the scan gives them reasonable cause to open it. The Patriot Act changed a lot of things.
Civil Asset Forfeiture should be required to be directly tied to a crime before it is legally allowed. It has become disgustingly obvious that Ethics, Integrity, Scruples, Honor, and Honesty are no longer Character Traits of our branches of Law Enforcement as they take money without tying it to a crime. The Legislature should take action to fix this immediately. And while they are at it, they should remove Qualified Immunity and Judicial Immunity, too, as they have been abused way too often!
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are considered seizure-resistant because physical force or legal coercion alone can't transfer them between parties without the corresponding private keys. However, authorities can force someone to reveal their private keys if they can identify their real-world identity and bitcoin addresses. Cryptocurrencies are also censorship resistant because no single entity can unilaterally freeze a user's account and seize their bitcoin as long as the user controls the private keys. However, judgment creditors can garnish bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in most cases, including bitcoin accounts held at US institutions like Coinbase.
This is literally interstate robbery. John Locke made the case that seizing your property, your livelihood, is as good as an attack on your person, on your life. I've been aware of and following these cases since the early 2000s.
Jerry Johnson's case was key to the State of Arizona passing House Bill 2810 against civil asset seizure since his money was actually taken at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. His case was quoted in passing the legislation that Gov. Ducey signed and made into law in 2021 and under ARS 13- 4305 , section E " The presence or possession of United States currency, debit cards or credit cards, without other indicia of a crime that subjects property to forfeiture, is insufficient probable cause for seizure of United States currency, debit cards or credit cards."
Problem there is that it isn't Arizona doing the seizing. Feds could care less. On roadside stops where cash is found, the local PD calls in a DEA agent who shows up at the scene and does the seizure. Then, nthe DEA gives the locals a "finders fee", generally 85% of the amount seized.
@@bradbrown6034The law was modeled after others that have passed after being challenged on those grounds the courts ruled the state can stop federal agencies from seizing anything because it was DEA that took Mr Johnson's money. When he went through TSA to board his flight the TSA saw the money and called the DEA and the DEA was waiting for him in Phoenix. Part of what helped pass the legislation is that the TSA acted as agents for the DEA and that was that was taken into consideration in writing the bill. Local PD cannot take anything for anybody from anybody because they are Arizona certified officers and aren't going to risk that certification.
Welcome to the world of Civil Asset Forfeiture, where they "prosecute" the cash and not the person because cash has no civil rights. Yes, that is their position on why they feel it's legal.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Never, ever, ever, EVER travel ANYWHERE with large sums of money! All of this theft falls under the heading of "civil asset forfeiture". Basically, they say you *could* be a drug dealer or maybe your money *may have" been obtained via the drug trade and it's up to you to prove your'e innocent. Guilty until proven innocent. And if you're black (like the two men in this story), you know damn well you're going to be a huge target. Now sometimes this is hard if you're traveling overseas and want to have local currency on you. The exchange rate is usually better when you get money from your local bank, as opposed to getting the money in the country you're going to. So I'd limit things to $1,000 if you're traveling overseas. Or even less, maybe $300. Enough so you can get through the airports, get on a taxi and get yourself to your hotel. From there, find local places, where the exchange rate will be better. But if you're traveling in the US, do NOT travel with $5k, $10k or even more in cash, especially if you're a minority.

It's literally to the point now where someone can fly with $1000 in cash (which ain't that much these days) to Vegas to gamble and they will run you through the security wringer and seize it. Like no one has ever brought $1000 to Vegas before!
One way around this is if traveling within the USA and your bank has branches in the city you are traveling to, wait until you get to your destination city to withdraw the money. At that time, ask the branch manager to advise if a letter stating purpose intended for money would help or should you get a Cashier's Check instead. If traveling out of USA check with your bank to see what bank in your destination city they have cooperation agreements with. They can either wire the money to that bank on your behalf or give you a Cashier's Check that bank will accept. Carrying large sums of money is contra to how our society works. Since the Great Depression, protections were put in place to prevent bank failures causing people to lose their money, there by removing the "I dont trust banks defense." Is this a proper/legal thing? technically it is not. Cash in your pocket is cash not in processing somewhere for something. Talk with a lawyer before traveling with large sums of money. There are sensors at all TSA Checkpoints that are looking for the scent of the ink in our money. When sensor is triggered, DEA is sent to where you are boarding your flight.
I think more people need to cover this so people don't travel with large amounts of cash. If you do make sure you have proof of what you're using it for. Like me I need to buy a vehicle and I'm looking from me in texas to California because that span is the best place to buy a used vehicle. This gave me some great ideas on how to proceed from here. Thank you for doing this.

Your money is not really your money anymore. They can't seize crypto.
I would argue that there is a case, as well, for self-defense, no matter that they are carrying a badge.

His mother had Hepatitis C and had been before he was born. She suffered for a while and finally lost her battle.
He kept cash out in the open in his hotel room for the maid to find?
Freedom😂😂😂
@@ForeverBrooklynNYC I used to travel a lot for business. When I have the maid come in for cleaning, I always put everything in my luggage in a corner where it does not need to be moved. I also put something on the suitcase so I would know if it has been moved or touched.
I never have the maid come in to clean until after I check out. Use the do not disturb tag.@@monkeyking-self-proclaimed7050
I don't fly anymore. I never have large amounts of cash. And I pretty much live under a rock. I miss my carefree and fun America of the 1980s.
Blatantly stealing money from the public and getting away with it these people should be in jail. They have no right to do that.
CORRUPTION AT ITS BEST
Gangs with badges.
Keep your receipts ppl, and stay away from cash in public!
Please donate to the institute for justice I.J. they do great work and fight police department corruption.
It's time we exercise our second amendment on law enforcement.
This is wild!! I’m in Canada and my mom has always told me to avoid flying thru USA no matter what when we fly to our home country. I never got why but have listened and have never stepped foot anywhere near America or their airports, even if it means it will take me longer to fly through other airports. I get it now…. Between your guns, your corrupt TSA, and this, I think I’m good 😂 how are they legalizing theft in broad daylight???
Ya Canadian govt is so just 😂, freezing the bank accounts of truckers and those that donated to them for refusing forced jabs 😂
Please watch “To catch a Smuggler” and you’ll realize that Canada’s airports and land crossings are as bad as the US’.
We avoided US airports since 10 years ago and getting worse after Trump. We are willing to pay more airfares just for that
I heard Canada is worse!
Drug dealers, smugglers, thieves, and cons at all major Canadian airports. YVR is a creep zoo under the facade. Worse is the airport/ airlines work with them and won't allow police to come into airport.
This is how citizens retaliate with deadly force, and no body would feel bad for all these illegal seizures. Wow… imagine just taking your money, no receipt or any way to track down how to get it back. Mind boggling
Relax man
@jbaru648 imagine getting robbed for 100k would you relax?
And then they wonder why The People have disdain for the Government.
It's literally to the point now where someone can fly with $1000 in cash (which ain't that much these days) to Vegas to gamble and they will run you through the security wringer and seize it. Like no one has ever brought $1000 to Vegas before!
They aren't gonna seize $1000. $1000 can be someone's weekly paycheck at a job. That's not alot of money. It has to be over $3K.
@@naturistfredthey'll seize the 1k in a heartbeat. It will cost you more to sue to get it back, so it's free money for them.
You mean steal its a diffrence, Legal extortion.
GANGS BEHIND THE BADGE !!
How is this legal?
Pulling $80k out in a day is hard
@@kammyr4082you shouldn’t be flying with $80K in cash
No one should have to do this.
That’s stealing! They can’t just taking people money by assuming! They need to be hold accountable and paid for all the legal fees!
Inflicting bodily injury is a way to protect your personal property from bandits.
Agreed. Most people are sheep and will just blindly comply though.
On a Government officer will guarantee a prison sentence.😅
@@ClarkKent-ic3pb just need to make sure to dispatch them then.
Youre free to go on your trip with no money..
This definitely goes against our Fourth Amendment! Hope we can get everyone together that have been harassed and unreasonably searched. It’s time to take them to court!
Without oversight, agencies can operate through sheer laziness and assign guilt as they see fit. Your tax dollars allow the federal government to seize your assets simply because a government agent doesn’t like you. A lawsuit doesn’t assign accountability. It simply costs taxpayers more money.
It happens here in Canada 🇨🇦 .i had 1500dollars flying from Toronto to Vancouver. They took it. I never got a reason why. Or my money back. 6yrs ago. ( my Christmas money from my family in Ontario. I now no longer fly . It's train or hitching. .since we no longer have Grey Hound.
The government should be responsible for the legal fees incurred by the victims 🙄
No, the pricks that take the money and their approving supervisors should be made to pay them.
My friend had this happen to him while he was driving his car on vacation and house hunting with his wife. Gotta love this corrupt country.
So glad to see that the Institute for Justice is getting involved. Hope they win.
Keep your dough in your Venmo or bring a check. I have seen that tv show that focuses on international airport security and they showed you cannot bring more than a certain amount with you. I believe it's under $3000. Anything more, it's taken.
No law prohibits you from bringing any amount of money on a flight. Likewise, TSA has no rules that limit how much money you can bring through security.

How much cash can I legally travel with?
You need to declare it when traveling internationally
It's legal to travel with more than $10,000 in the United States and abroad. You have the right to travel with as much money as you want. However, during international travel, you need to report currency and monetary instruments in excess of $10,000.Mar 10, 2023
@@vegasmitch1472lol another guy who supports boots. The dude in the video had 8500. That's not larger than 10,000. That's basic math. Please tell me again, how you're an a$$hole.
I was waiting for the news reporter to give us a way to avoid this, thank you. So anything over $3K can potentially be seized.
Great job making excuses for the thieving, low life cops 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
It's like they're helping themselves to an unearned bribe.
The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution prohibits the government from conducting "unreasonable searches and seizures". This means that law enforcement generally cannot search a person or their property without a warrant or probable cause. It also applies to arrests and the collection of evidence. These peoples' civil rights were violated, and I hope they take the thieves to court, though they shouldn't have to in the first place.
That's just being robbed ,now how is that right ?they are stealing people's money , just like a road side crook ! And this needs to be dealt with ! Fast ! People should be able to travel with their money ! I have even heard cops do this to!
This has been happening for decades probably before you were born! This is where the war on drugs is just a way to rob innocent people who have no criminal history or anything!
THIS IS crazyyyy this needs to brought to the Supreme Court! This can not be legal.... this is abuse of power!
Exactly!
