    The main problem with this design is that because it wraps around instead of laces, there’s no defined point of tension in the underbust and because its cut on the bias, this design only really works well for those who already have a well defined difference between the bust and underbust

    First, I so admire your perseverance and honesty!
    If you are open to a suggestion--and if not, that's cool; the internet always thinks it knows best and is almost always wrong--may I suggest trying the trick where you *place* your girls in the stays before the final tie? I'm thinking of that "bend over and wiggle them in" thing that bra specialists recommend.
    Again, GO YOU for all the things!

    I've considered making my own short stays, a friend of mine suggested finding a cheap balconette bra where the cups fit (i wear a 48 A cup so I need smaller gussets on a wider base)to help make the patter to make the bust fit better

      Nice! Yes, I think when I make the "real" version I will move the gussets a little closer to the center. I plan on giving the Rethreaded short stays a go at some point too.

    • @MayYourGodGoWithYou
      @MayYourGodGoWithYou 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just can't get the redthreaded ones to fit, possibly because there is an 11" difference between my underbust and my overbust measurements. Someone suggested I try recutting the pattern with the U type shape of a bra that fits and then making gathered fabric cups/gussets to fit in the space. She had done this and it worked well but you do need to have some idea on redrafting and altering patterns. I'm going to try this out and see if it works and if it does I'll try making a set of the lazy stays using the same method. (and I know all about stomach bigger than bust problems as well). I also find the problem with the redthreaded pattern is the amount of boning it asks you to put in, I don't like boning - one reason I don't like underwired bras but at my size they aren't optional - and by the time I added everything they wanted (and I didn't use the steel boning either as that seemed much too confining) it still felt uncomfortable. Hopefully I can simply use tight underbust lacing to provide the support I need but I need to experiment further first.

    • @akhagee4707
      @akhagee4707 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ABC1701A I too can not stand underwire. If you are in the US, try a trip to Torrid. They cater to plus size and all my bras are now from there and I don't own a single underwire now.

  • @mcwjes

    I think it's very pretty! I've been watching Mariah Pattie experiment with 18th century stays, and one of her tricks is to basically make padding for under the bust, little crescents stuffed with cabbage scraps to keep her bust from migrating. I wonder if something like that could add support for your pretty stays.

    • @PocketFullofPoseys
      @PocketFullofPoseys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I have considered that! I may try it out.

    • @HosCreates
      @HosCreates 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've used shoulder pads to push up my small but wide east to west bust in a pair of stays or they won't stay up and in. It helps! Padding was totally historical

  • @hannahphillips-ryan398
    @hannahphillips-ryan398 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great job! I do have one suggestion for your center boning/busk issue. I’m about your size and pretty apple shaped as well and what I have found is that using 1/2 inch flat steel for the center and bending it to fit the shape of my tummy works great! You can put in two side by side and even stack them if needed to give extra strength but you can bend them to form to your exact shape, it might work for you like it’s worked for me!

    Thank you for the video. I had already seen the other 2 vids before finding yours. With you showing how to draft the pattern up to scale has really helped me understand how to do it and not be over whelmed with it.
    I have seen several posts with the bust buddies (as i call them) the crescent shaped padding. I think it will help me as my girls lost the fight with gravity years ago. I'm also going to add boning to the side but angled towards the front. Will experiment with that.
    I'm plus sized and a wheelchair user so this vid has been doubly helpful. Was beginning to loose hope of getting historical stays/corsets to be comfortable.

    The final product in this is absolutely glorious ❤❤❤❤❤. For those plus size girlies that struggle like me with fit and are even lazier than our dear Emily let me clue you in to a hot secret I have used. For context I am a US 16 but have been a 24W and cups are O or UK 🇬🇧 size 36K bust. For myself I take an older bra and recycle the cups and make an inner pocket for lift and separation. You can save time on the front portion of the lazy stays in this way. I had to make my own nursing bras so this wrap around style was so much more comfortable and practical while pregnant and post delivery. I have not tried adding boning in my application but coming across this video I will try it for a bra option under some dresses 👗 I have. For myself the final shape of a corset is to push the ladies closer to the body and upwards much like high compression sports bras but with the top 1/3 of the décolletage (sp?) showing. I can’t wait to try making a new lazy bra version with boning to smooth the sides more I think it looks very nice 👍.

    Thank you very much for chosing the Utrecht Stays Pattern. Wonderful video tutorial! I love that you haven't given up and finally found a comfortable fit. These were indeed originally intended for casual wear in the morning or on a travel etc.. Comfort (by adjustments to the unique body shape/size) was the major intention of patterns/stays like these and those from J.S.Bernhardt's books. The end product looks so good on you. I also made this corset and used a wooden busk. My belly is rather round but not quite larger than my bust and I also have the issue with the busk not sitting flat to my sternum. I thought maybe having stays that lace would fix that but after your comment it might just be the configuration of my proportions

I did try the La Mode Bagatelle Regency Wardrobe pattern packet and their bodiced petticoat wasn't so bad since all you have to worry about is from your shoulders to the underbust. Hercules is the cutest angel!!!! Tysm for sharing your struggles, it’s so helpful. I’m not plus size but I’m a 32G so that causes fit issues. I’ve realised modern bras will never work because on me the band doesn’t go across the sternum but just below, over my diaphragm, which makes breathing properly difficult. And if I make the band tight enough to actually support me it cuts in, instead I try to evenly distribute the misery between the band and the straps so I only get red marks 🙃 I’m hoping a corset might distribute the pressure across more places and make things better!

    I also have the problem with things not sitting flat to my chest in the center, which I think is partly because mine are super close together.
    Also it’s good to see the adjustments you have to make because you’re the closest to my shape out of the costubers that I know of. I have a plan for making a historybounding corset based off of an 1860s one, but that’s going to need a loooooot of fit adjustments. For one thing, I need to add 20” to the waist to start...
    I feel lucky that I’m still flexible enough to tighten corset lacing on myself (though making sure the edges are straight is a challenge...)

    Hi Rebecca. Loved this video and thank you for showing the struggle of not fitting the "regular" proportions. My struggle is that my waist measurement is exactly the same as my hip measurement. This is allsow why I never wear jeans they just slip right of me (all most). I have only made regency stays at this point because I can't find anything about padding out the hip gossets in a stays or corset.

      I know hip pads are used with Edwardian corsets. I'm making one in the next couple of months with Black Snail Patterns Edwardian Corset pattern. I don't see why the same type of tie on thing couldn't be used with other corsets. You'd just have to make the gussets large enough to accommodate.

    1: looks amazing as just an experiment. 2: because of body shape there is a definite need to add support to it, and saying as such 3 gussets instead of 2 to the top. The busk instead of corset boning the paint stick busk looks amazing and will add definition to the shaping. I did notice though all the issues with your shoulder straps. I am thinking of adjusting the back of them so they sit to the inside of the shoulder blades instead of the outside of them. 47-48D bust is what I'm going to be working with. but thank you so much for explaining the math because i will be watching this again to get the formulation for sizing. I love your attitude of not giving up. To me it looks like it's to short in the bust and flattening you. You need to find your bust apex, measure down from the apex to the bottom of your breast. Do this while wearing a bra that supports your bust at the height you want it to be. I love this stay pattern and your shell fabric is awesome. Great video. • @anetajezewska-singh4392
    @anetajezewska-singh4392 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Throughout the video I just wanted to shout "You need bigger gussets". For you they need to start lower and go wider. The tip of the V shape needs to start under your bust. The "cups" are not big enough, not wide enough to and don't start low enough for your body.
    Just scaling up would not work because your body needs more room for your fullness. The sports bra effect is because of that - it squeezes you rather that give you support.
    Please try again :)
    I would love to see you in stays that actually fit you!
    Because it's the pattern that doesn't fit your body, and the pattern can be adjusted. The struggle is real.
    Keep up the good work :)

      I'm unsure of what you are saying. Perhaps it didn't translate correctly? I based these Regency stays on a pattern from the early 1800's. If you are suggesting that I copy a well fitting bra that I already own, I did not consider that because the fit of modern bras is not the same as Regency stays. I wanted these stays to be as historically accurate as possible and these were also a first try to work out fit issues. Thank you for your comment!

  • @maryel5398
    @maryel5398 ปีที่แล้ว

    While I realize this video is 2 years old, and my comment is not necessary, I wondered if making the straps that go around to the front much wider would allow it to be tied/buckled/somehow fastened in a way to hold as underbust support. That probably would make it NOT be the “lazy corset” pattern you were trying to recreate, but wouldn’t be a bad idea for actual use going forward. Like dividing the wide tie into 2 at the front so the top part would tie up under the bust as bust support and the bottom on the actual belly to keep it in place on the waistline. I have no way to draw that out in a comment, but imagine a thick U on its side with long tails at the end of the tie.

    I'm disappointed that we didn't get to see Thor!
    The problem you're running into is that your torso is narrow at the shoulders and widens toward the waist, and you're working with shapes that assume the opposite. That's why it ends up too large through the chest and the shoulder straps aren't working. You could probably flip the back upside down so the bottom edge becomes the shoulder strap and vice versa. For the front, you'll need to redraft it so the bottom edge flares out to accommodate your belly without widening the chest and shoulders.
