This looks like it would be really nice if someone is wanting to transition from wearing bras to stays but isn't ready to commit to having stiff boning and a busk keeping their spine straight.
Also, lovely video. Your voice is very pleasant, and there's something so fun about watching people sew historical garments that I've just discovered in the last year or so.

This is lovely! I wish there were more tutorials / videos about hand-sewing, for those of us who don't have a sewing machine :) One can wax lyrical about how energy-saving machine sewing is etc., as many do, but that's a moot point when you don't own a machine (and not planning to invest in one, as they *are* costly)! ;)

Watching you putting the pieces together really helped me and now I'm feeling confident about sewing my very first corset. The handmade stitches and the texture of the heavy linen look very charming. I adore it when you can see that a garment is handmade, it makes it seem loved and cared for. Thank you for this beautiful and atmospheric video.

    • @MayYourGodGoWithYou

I made myself a very rough "muslin" based on the mediaeval bra, or breast bags, and while it needs some refinement it provides ample support to be worn around the house. With a couple of small adjustments I will be able to wear one in public instead of a modern underwired bra. And as a UK size 38M I am a large size across the bust so support is essential. Regency short stays are next on my list in an attempt to lose the modern bra. I did make a muslin which was much to small so after looking at different extant garments on pinterest I am trying a different type of gusset for the next attempt, these gussets can't be used easily if you have a very large difference in measurements between the under bust and full bust, and mine is 25cm/10".
But even my rough muslin of the breast bags (made from scraps in many colours) has shown me that while the figure you end up with is different to a modern one, if wearing modern underwired bras, the comfort gained is worth the effort.
I do use a single layer of 260gsm linen, whatever is left from my last project usually, I line it with a cotton, usually poplin as it wears and washes well, and I also use loops to lace the items up rather than grommets or buttonholes as I find them quicker and easier to lace myself. I also make everything front fastening as I have mobility issues, easy to do abd worth thinking about unless they have to be period accurate.
Go ahead and try both short stays or the mediaeval bra, photos and the different blogs can be easily found on pinterest if interested. Both different but boy, are they more comfortable to wear than a modern bra. Also look up Morgan Donner on youtube, she actually made a period corset and wore it for a week to work as well as around the house, her comments and findings were very different to the image given in sundry regency or victorian romance novels. Also the Prior Attire videos on youtube about wearing victorian corsetry. Eye opening.
      Have fun and enjoy.
Oh, and I made my own patterns as the ready made ones don't go anywhere near my size so if you are adventureous, go ahead and try. It's fun and well worth the effort.

@@MayYourGodGoWithYou I feel your pain with the big boobs, as mine are a 40M(US). Even if that's a few cup sizes smaller than yours, it's still huge by "average" standards. I also think that corded Regency short stays could be a tremendous relief compared to my modern bras.

I have a bear of a time wearing modern bras because I had broken a few ribs a few years ago and the pressure it puts on my body is immense. I have been considering making myself a pair of stays and an undershirt (aka short chemise...is there a name for that?) to see if it would allow me bust support without killing me. I have huge....tracts of land...and could certainly use the support, especially when in public.

"nearly everything is done with a backstitch." It's pretty much my working stitch for everything now, save felling. I wish I''d known about it 30 years ago when fixing horse blankets, it would have stayed repaired instead of popping out nearly immediately.

I am tearing down jeans that have stains to use for my non-accurate stays after being fed up by bras and the way they work. Gonna make stays and tops for home-/lounge wear. Doesn’t have to be accurate, just comfortable and I have too much irritation from elastic/rubber/latex and synthetic fabrics so why not make durable stays and such in natural fabrics. If I like how I look in them I will make nice ones but for now I don’t want to bother with getting coutill and such. I have cotton jeans, -fabric and cotton canvas so I can make stuff out of those to begin with. Still looking for which pattern to get for my short but heavy torso and the non-inflatable balloons. Which I could just inflate them to a smaller size but wishing doesn’t make it so, so I’ll start plan B now lol
    Love how these turned out!

I personally would have used a pair of needle drivers (locking hemastats --> probably spelled wrong) for pushing a pulling the sewing needle.
When I did some flossing on a corset from orchard corset (otr corset, style cs345) to stabilize the bones in their channels, I tried using only my fingers but because of severe and chronic nerve pain, I ordered a two pair set of locking hemastats so that I wouldn't keep causing pain along with having better leverage on the needle.

As someone who hates hand sewing, this project scares me! I love the end result though, really nice, and I love that you even made your own cord!

"I decided to also weave the cord" the commitment!!! incredible! i was feeling bad for your fingers, it seems like you're not using a thimble?

These stays are yummy! And they look so comfy! I've been re-watching all of our Jane Austen historical dramas this week while hand sewing so this is on point.

ive been on the lookout for a pattern for short stays as im sewing a ballgown for my graduation ball this summer, its going to take place in an actual castle so the pressure is on! Its gonna be a lightblue gown of a soft lace fabric that me and my sister bought at a fleamarket when we were about 12. The plan is to make it really floaty and summery, and the skirt will end about a decimeter off the ground, so more like a dress to wear to a flower field than a traditional regency gown. Anyway, this pattern looks really nice! The nice thing with sewing my ballgown myself, and using fabric i already own (appart from some ikea curtains i bought for underskirts.. but we dont talk about that, shhh) is that i can buy a few patterns and my bank account will still hurt less than if i bought a dress

its also nice to make a gown thats pretty and very much my own style - but that isnt _only_ appropriate for castle balls, cause i dont attend many of those. But ill be able to wear this dress both at the ball, at the graduation garden party i have with family and friends, on midsummer celebrations. Basically on any fancy summer/spring (and maybe winter.. since _blue_ ) celebration! and its nice to know that i wont be spending all these sewing hours for something ill only wear once :D
(my sewing it myself also makes my granma proud, so thats a big plus)

I’ve just finished my mock-up using this same pattern yours looks beautiful! I had a lot of trouble lacing the back to try it on, and ended up changing the eyelet pattern to accommodate a spiral lacing, so I could put it on by myself. How did you put it on? I just don’t have the dexterity to lace it while it’s on, and I couldn’t figure out how to lace it and then put it on. Help!

I could not put it on by myself, I had help 😂 although I did read somewhere that you can put it on with the back facing forwards and the straps unlaced, do the lacing, sweep it around, do the straps and then tighten
