I’m 57 years old , I have watched White Christmas every year since I can remember. Every year I get the same tingle as the film starts and every year I start to cry , I love the film so much . White Christmas is the ultimate Christmas film
White Christmas more than any other still brings back that feeling of wonder and sense of Holiday and pushes the idea of Family in a much broader sense,it's message is timeless.❤
I have six "must see" viewing experiences every Christmas. One is "White Christmas", which is shown on the big screen at our town's main theater every year. The lady in my life and I always go to a Saturday matinee, and then walk down the street to a lovely restaurant, for a leisurely, multi-course dinner that reminds me all over again why I love her. I'm so glad that the film centers around an act of brotherly kindness (helping General Waverly save his inn). It's THAT, even more than the wonderful songs and performances, that make "White Christmas" such a perfect Christmas observance.
White Christmas on the big screen? I haven't experienced it that way since I was a kid. Lucky you! And to turn that wonderful experience into a yearly dinner celebration in honor of both this beautiful film & the woman you love is exactly how it ought to be.
I can't remember when I truly saw miss rosemary cloney on a first true date with a guy whom I held fallen madly in love with ! I was perhaps a mere young age of 15 . What a gent. We drone in his car from New haven, Connecticut. To Manhattan, NYC. He took me to the 🌈 room atop of the renowned n b c building. That's where I heard Rosemary Clooney sing. I can never get enough of White Christmas, and my family shares that with me. My daughters and I love the white fur trimmed red velvet dresses in the finale that Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen wear. What lovely and talented ladies. Both my daughters are classically trained ballet dancers and we look so forward to any dance that Vera Ellen has in this film. We agree with Rosemary Clooney, that Vera Ellen was the absolute best Hollywood dancer. This film also made Rosemary Clooney the legendary singer that she was. There was nothing Vera Ellen couldn't do, yet she made it all look effortless, which is the goal of any professional dancer. And she was a treat for the eyes too, incredible body type of the ideal dancer not found in any other Hollywood dancer, and there were many, of course. Sadly it all came at a cost to her health, and that is the underlying sadness in watching this film, was the price she was paying to create such a masterpiece of her professional work for the ages. She gave beyond her all. This film truly brought together the finest and best of Hollywood talent, not only for that time, but before and after too. It is a reminder that computerized special effects of today and crass "humor" is unnecessary in producing the greatest in entertainment that people will love always beyond any test of time.
I love this movie for Danny Kaye. He was a brilliant man, a comedian, singer, dancer, and that was just in the entertainment world!! He was also a renowned amateur chef, orchestra conductor, jumbo jet pilot, and humanitarian (the first "celebrity" face of UNICEF for years.) Just a great, great man and so very talented!!!!

Rosemary Clooney, what a class act! Fantastic big band singer, actress and dancer, she held her own with the best of them! The movie stars of today can't compare to the talent from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Rest in peace Rosemary, you were one in a million!!
Well of course they don’t make em like that anymore because they were PIONEERS with little rules or guidelines and virtually no knowledge. That FREEDOM affords creativity. My first memory of White Christmas was one holiday season in the 70s, I was pre-teen and my parents were having the carpet in the living room and main part of the house shampooed and all of the furniture was in the kitchen and the TV was tucked away in the corner. I managed to free up a chair and sat alone in the kitchen in that tiny little chair and watched the entire movie. It has been a favorite of mine ever since.
This movie has been a must see for the 49 years my husband and I have been married. We look forward to watching it every year. They don't make movies like this anymore!!
White Christmas is definitely one of those timeless movies that will still be hugely popular and loved for generations to come. It's among my top 5 favorite movies for sure! Rosemary and Vera were absolute stunners back in the day!
So much class, talent and dignity in these priceless productions of yesteryear. Family tradition at our house every Christmas season. But our culture today has lost so much. What's happened to us?
Rosemary Clooney singing "Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me" puts such a pang in my heart that's beyond my describing it. Then there's that gown she is wearing that is just cinematic perfection. I will watch White Christmas (1954) anytime after November 1st through the last snowfall of the season; even if it's a spring squall. In my (imperfect) memory, for _every_ Christmas of my childhood there was either snow falling or a foot or two on the ground so my seeing this movie when I was a youngster had an impact on me. In the second grade, 1963, I remember discussing Vera-Ellen's entrance during the "Choreography" sequence with my classmates and that 'nerve tap' which kicks everything off.
@Margaret Gust You are so right about those gloves and Edith Head! Once it was pointed out to me, years ago, about that being George Chakiris i found this scene more layered and interesting.
All my childhood memories are forever linked to the "Golden Age" of Hollywood. There are no words to convey my gratitude to ALL the marvelous actresses and actors who graced my life. Thank you and God bless the departed, and those still with us. Love from Morocco...
God bless, Bing/Rosemary. Eternal Memory. When I see this film, I am with my parents again (long gone) and I am a child. And at the same time, our children (one, with a voice like Clooney's; one, with the dancing ability of Kaye) can see and understand the generations before them, and connect.
I first saw the movie on television when I was a little boy. I tried to catch it every year it came on. I finally bought the CD and I watch it during the Christmas holidays. Great songs, great performances.
I was 9 when White Christmas came out in my hometown, NYC. What an impact it had and watching it now is a sort of time-capsule for me. The fashions (Edith Head), the color palette, everything reflected the moment, idealized of course. They don't make them like that anymore, but when they did, you couldn't have done better than White Christmas.
@@deborrastrom8559 Me, too. For me, it was the epitome of how grownups lived. But when I got older, customs changed - even dancing. I always watch it just before Christmas Eve. And it gets better.
My favorite Christmas movie...and one of my favorite movies, Christmas or not. It's just wonderfully cast and the songs are top-notch. One of my best memories is seeing Rosemary Clooney's collection of costumes and props from the movie at an exhibit in Louisville, KY...including the "Sisters" dresses, Vera-Ellen's Mandy outfit, and many of the military outfits. It was just as magical seeing the costumes as it is to see the movie.
One of my favorite movies. Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen are so good, it's difficult to believe that White Christmas was the last movie Rosemary made and the second to the last for Vera-Ellen.
I love that movie! When you could first rent VHS tapes, no matter the time of year when we rented, my choice was always White Christmas. I now own it on a CD. I need to get it out and watch it!
I thought that I had seen this film, but no it was "Holiday Inn" that I mixed it up with. Right after watching this video, I found "White Christmas" on Netflix and enjoyed it thoroughly! Made it more fun to hear some of the background details from Rosemary Clooney. What a voice she had. Lovely. Great film!
If you see a clean print of this it's like watching a beautiful print of The Wizard of Oz. Get right up to the screen and you can see wonderful detail and amazing color! It's just that good!
I have seen several of these truly classic films in re-releases on the big screen in the theater. You finally notice these details! For example, Audrey Hepburn had crooked teeth in Roman Holiday! Who would have ever guessed?? I was always taken by her beauty that I didn't notice any flaws could exist but you can't hide it on a huge theater screen. I hope I can see this film in the theater someday. It was offered in theaters a few years ago, but it didn't work with my demanding schedule then. I hope I will have that opportunity to be able to see these beautiful details on a large scale. How wondrous that would be!
What always strikes me is how great the film looks. I know the studios were deathly afraid of television, so a lot of these extravagant films made in the 50s in color just look amazing - the bright color grading and costumes and sets just make everything jump out and pop for the audience. The actors almost don't look like actual people sometimes, but more like colorful porcelain dolls or something. If anyone knew how to work magic with film cameras, it was these guys.
This movie has been a tradition with my family (me, husband, daughter) for 34 years. I loved it as a kid and when VCR's came in, my mom bought me the video. It's playing on AMC right now, and I played it on Netflix last night. (of course I have the DVD too) Christmas morning, I would wake the family with Bing's Christmas album. Shortly after my daughter left home, she requested that album for Christmas.
It's always a relief when Bing & Rosemary get back together at the end. I always worry that during one of my viewings she'll choose to not watch the Ed Harrison Show, never realizing the real good he's trying to do. She then decides to stay in NYC to move on with her life, ruining the film's ending for me! Luckily, at least so far, she tunes in and heads back to Vermont - & Bing.
Omg, me too ... I thought I was the only one so obsessed with this movie that I watch it multiple times starting right after Thanksgiving! :D This movie absolutely makes my Christmas for me and I wouldn't feel like it was Christmas if I missed it. I'm in my mid-sixties and have been doing that for decades! Cheers to you my fellow WC fan(atic)!
Love this movie! The songs are gorgeous and memorable, the dancing incredible, the cast was top notch and the feeling you get after you watch it makes you feel good all over! Seems like it gets better every year you watch it!
My favourite Christmas movie without a doubt. Watched it every Christmas a kid, and now I get to watch it with my kids every year also. Absolutely a favourite family moment!
I was a child back in the sixties when I had enjoyed this wonderful movie with my dad when it was released for TV viewing. That was the way that I was introduced to the wonderful life of old movies! I feel very fortunate to be able to see these old movies!
Rosie Clooney is George's aunt and if you look, you can see a resemblance. Her voice was so sultry and beautiful, clean and clear......her signature song, "Love You Didn't Do Right By Me," is one I can listen to over and over. Note that one of the dancers in the movie when she is doing that song is George C. (can't spell it) from West Side Story....an unknown then.
When the four were in the train singing about swooshing down the mountain it was actually Bing Crosby singing Danny Kayes part with only Danny’s mouth moving.
She had several several children, so she was quite a lady as you can clearly see in this interview, but also from having such a large family, I believe, made her very real too! Anyone who has spoken of her remembers her with fondness, even if the story had a bit of "temper" in it! What a grand lady, and devoted wife and mother. That is rarely said about any Hollywood star.
Sisters, sisters There were never such devoted sisters Never had to have a chaperon, no sir I'm here to keep my eye on her Caring, sharing Every little thing that we are wearing When a certain gentleman arrived from Rome She wore the dress and I stayed home =)
Thank you so much for posting this. I just watched the movie earlier in the evening and I was hoping to learn more about the backstory. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
We love you, Rosemary Clooney!!! Bing was a real brat to his own kids and anyone else who had need of him. He wouldn't give an inch nor leave so much as a penny to his children. You're a classy lady to leave that story out at the end of White Christmas where he got very angry at the kids. You were absolutely BRILLIANT in this roll. We'll always love you!
According to Mary Francis, Gary admitted to her that he made up all the stuff about Bing's "abuse" to sell his tell-all book. It wasn't in the original plan for the book and the publisher told him that in order to sell, they would need to sensationalize his relationship with his father. He may not have been perfect; may have been strict, but he wasn't abusive.
So, Scott, were you his lawyer? Were you in the room when this "abuse" occurred? Or are you just repeating old rumors and the tripe you read in Gary's book, which he later admitted was a fabrication? Why trash a dead man's rep? Truth is, there is evidence his first wife was abusive when she was in a drunken stupor. The children all showed symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome. At worst, his failing was his inability to bknd with them.
Sadly a bit misinformed about Bing, you have to read about him a bit more, especially in regards to the money and his amazing amounts of kindnesses and support he provided for family, friends, employees and even strangers. For one man to do so much for so many was astonishing. For somebody you think didn't help anybody his amount of money lending, support, breaking down of barriers, etc.. are absolutely amazing. Read the newest info about his sons book and how he tried to help his first wife with her problems. He was flawed but kind and giving.
The sad(and somewhat strange) thing is~Due to Rosemary Clooney being under a different recording contract(to Bing & Danny),she is replaced on the CD of the soundtrack of "White Christmas" by Peggy Lee! Even more odd,on the DVD of "White Christmas" you can hear Rosemary Clooney and the complete cast. BTW,if you look carefully, one of the dancers is a very young George Chakiris! aged 20.He starred in "West Side Story" some 7 years later,so someone must have noticed him. He is still with us(2019),aged 85.

Shortly after my daughter left home, she requested that album for Christmas.
same for us....it's Christmas time....get out the movie.
What wonderful Christmas memories with your family. You are a wonderful wife and mother to have created these smiles at Christmas.
On Sundance for approx 12 - 24 hrs straight here in 2020. ONE of my FAV's!
I have watched this movie 5 times this Christmas year. I never get tired of watching it.
@Judy My post was meant for you ;)

Love this movie! The songs are gorgeous and memorable, the dancing incredible, the cast was top notch and the feeling you get after you watch it makes you feel good all over! Seems like it gets better every year you watch it!
Everything you say is so so true! It just gets better and better every time you're able to see it. What a delightful treat this film is!
My favourite Christmas movie without a doubt. Watched it every Christmas a kid, and now I get to watch it with my kids every year also. Absolutely a favourite family moment!
love the movie. Hope it's on tv this year
Wonderful interview. Thank you.
I was a child back in the sixties when I had enjoyed this wonderful movie with my dad when it was released for TV viewing. That was the way that I was introduced to the wonderful life of old movies! I feel very fortunate to be able to see these old movies!
Fancy meeting you here, Rosemary. That album with you and Bing is fab.
My favorite Christmas movie and song of all time.
Best Christmas movie ever!
This is the best Christmas movie ever. I look forward to seeing it over and over again.
I've been watching it every Christmas Eve since the age of 7 yes old
I never get tired of watching it.
I have loved reading all the comments here. They all touch my heart and bring me smiles.

Love this flim and always will it makes me cry at the end alwys reminds me of my late parents which sadly are not here now I will always watch it
LUV this Christmas Classic!
Merry Christmas to all! White Christmas (song & movie) are the best! They sure don’t make them like that anymore! Pity! Blessings!
When the four were in the train singing about swooshing down the mountain it was actually Bing Crosby singing Danny Kayes part with only Danny’s mouth moving.
Shooting of White Christmas was completed in 1953 but the film was not released until October 1954.
I love watching this movie
My favorite movie of Christmas
Part. 1& 2 are excellent
Timeless!
Oh to have those days back......neveragain
My favourite Xmas movie.
Bing was probably great on pictures but at home he was unbelievable
She seems like a very nice person.
she was.. up to a point.. she had a quick temper, so if something really pissed her off, she was VERY vocal about it.
I've just ordered it as I have NEVER seen it !
Well, Stephanie, you are in for a treat! Grab the popcorn and hot chocolate, make yourself comfortable, and enjoy.
awesome movie! one of my favorite classic musical
Sisters, sisters
There were never such devoted sisters
Never had to have a chaperon, no sir
I'm here to keep my eye on her
Caring, sharing
Every little thing that we are wearing
When a certain gentleman arrived from Rome
She wore the dress and I stayed home =)
Thank you so much for posting this. I just watched the movie earlier in the evening and I was hoping to learn more about the backstory. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Rosemary was a real classy babe. R.I.P
It’s also been said that he left his money for them to get at 65 to take care of them in old age.
Nor did he ever appear on one of Bob Hope's TV Specials.....very strange man, Bing Crosby.
