He's actually 1 of 6 guards, not 1 of 5 to win DPOY. Marcus Smart won it last year and became number 6. But nonetheless a dope video. Definitely one of my favorite guards. Incredible monster on defense. His record steals season will never be broken.
Otis Thorpe, Kevin Willis, Michael Cage, Sam Perkins and Alvin Robertson are underrated stars who went pro in the 1984 NBA Draft. They were very strong NBA players during their active days.
I wouldn’t call sam Perkins a star.. he had a few seasons where he put up fringe all star numbers then became a good starter and role player.. said with Kevin Willis
Although Michael Cage and Sam Perkins didn't made it to annual All-Star (Kevin Willis and Otis Thorpe were one-timers), they were known for longevity and respectable careers. Cage was a one-time league's leading rebounder and "iron man", but also has the dubious record of less than one assist and never made a three-pointer. Perkins could hold a curse-like record in appearing in three (3) NBA Finals with three different teams, and all of them were beaten by Phil Jackson-led squads.
@@KZA518 Willis & Perkins were both very very good starters for a decent stretch. Perkins could have been an all-star in 91-92 as a Laker. Willis was still a very productive starter into his mid 30's, averaging 16 & 8.5 for the 97-98 Rockets at age 35.
@ryansack5198 there's a difference between really good starter and a star.. I literally Said they each had a stretch of a few years of putting up fringe all star numbers then were good starters then role players...
With his steals and ability to pass, he could be a backup on the Spurs all-time team as PG. Because, you have Parker(true PG that got a lot better as his career progressed into his prime) and Gervin to start, Robertson and Ginobili(on the all-time guard list); imagine that quadruple feature on that all-time team lacing em up...10 steals?!?! Multiple times! I did not think that was possible once versus NBA talent!
Let it also be known that he had THREE more Triple Doubles with either 7 or 8 steals. He was 8 total steals away from FOUR Quadruple Doubles. An absolute monster on the court. Truly LOVED watching him play for MKE. In the modern NBA media landscape, that focuses primarily on stats and drama, he'd be a headline story every night.
Alvin Robertson's name was brought up by Reggie Miller on "Open Court" years ago, regarding him as a "tough guy." That's the only time I've heard his name brought up.
That Arkansas backcourt was super tough, Darrell had a nice pro career also. I would love to see him guard some of these guys in the league today, good defender with good team D equals puttin handcuffs on somebody… Alvin Robertson is as unsung as any NBA player ever…
I've probably been a sub for like 2 months but I have seen almost all of your video. You and Basketball Time Machine has some of the BEST basketball content on the planet!!!!
you should totally do grant long hes a heat legend, played for a bunch of teams but his time on the heat was good considering he was the second player drafted by the heat (first year of the heat second round) and was really good for two seasons
How about doing one on recent Hall of Fame guard Sidney Moncrief starring on the 1980s Bucks, then regarded for one of the games most all around players along with Magic, Bird, and Dr. J., prior to Michael Jordan entering the league.
I have mentioned this, he did a video on Al Jefferson, but wrote in the title, *the only bobcats all nba player* which In fact was cap, as Crash was 1st team all nba defence in 09-10
Before I saw Jordan play I was 5 yrs old and only watched Milwaukee bucks games and Alvin was my favorite player until I seen some guy from Chicago walking on air
Alvin Robertson was a defensive monster and averaged 17 points a game for the Spurs. Alvin Robertson bled Silver and Black. MJ also admits Alvin Robertson is one of the greatest defenders of all time.
Winning shouldn’t be placed on individual players like that. It’s a team game so if the player is doing what they’re supposed to then it’s the team that should get majority of the blame.🤔🤷🏽♂️
My all time Spurs team: PG: Alvin Robertson SG: George Gervin SF: Kawhi Leonard PF: Tim Duncan C: Victor Wembanyama Yeah, I have Wemby over Robinson. I’m sorry, I’ve seen enough from Wemby already. He’s doing things 20 year old rookies shouldn’t be doing, and he’s doing them averaging under 30 minutes. He’s a defensive enforcer as a rookie already rivaling PEAK Duncan and peak Robinson. And Robertson over Tony Parker. Alvin, obviously, brings elite defense. And he’s a bigger guy too, at 6’4. Can easily switch onto shooting guards. Alvin wouldn’t need much worry about scoring, he can set up and dish it out to the other four, so he can put more energy into lockdown defense. This team has elite scoring, elite shooting, front court dominance on both ends of the floor (particularly shot blocking), and decent level passing. 4/5 are elite defenders (not just GOOD defenders, but DPOY level defense). Alvin and Kawhi both can steal like crazy. Duncan and Wemby both block like crazy. Alvin is 6’4, George and Kawhi are both 6’7, and then 6’11 Tim and 7’4 Wemby. Thats a big team. This Spurs team could hang with any all-time team from any franchise.
Larry brown was a bum coach who would pick a player to vilify to try to get the team to rally around to ostracize and blame for his average coaching. This man Reggie Miller Allen Iverson Stephon Marbury Rasheed Wallace, the pistons were going to win that year no matter who their coach was, he was given a complete team.
U crazy.....i remember in 93 my favorite Rockets barely scraped by the Clippers. He put the full court press on us. You know how hard it was to make.....the Clippers a respectful playoff team in the 90s lol? Brown could coach!

Why Cage? He was okay as a rebounder

One of the most underrated and not talked about guards of the 1980’s.

I am a huge fan of Alvin Robertson.... I had fashioned my defensive game behind his.
Thanks for the reminder. I miss defense.
Alvin Robertson Is Probably The Most Naturally Strong Guard To Ever Play...S.T.R.O.N.G👌🏿!!
Always thought he was crazy underrated
Alvin Robertson's name was brought up by Reggie Miller on "Open Court" years ago, regarding him as a "tough guy." That's the only time I've heard his name brought up.
Do Bob Love, one of the very first All-Stars for the Chicago Bulls in the decade before Michael Jordan, that team was very solid
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!
Jason Richardson, Corey magette, Elton brand ,Antwan Jamison, nick anderson
That Arkansas backcourt was super tough, Darrell had a nice pro career also. I would love to see him guard some of these guys in the league today, good defender with good team D equals puttin handcuffs on somebody… Alvin Robertson is as unsung as any NBA player ever…

Last two have been defensive masterminds. Mookie Blaylock to continue this defensive streak. Mr. Pearl Jam himself.
Alvin Robertson on the all time spurs with Kawhi, TD & D Admiral would be tough ASF to score on

He was also a beast in Atlanta. Great rebounder and defense guy.
The best defensive guard of that era.
I like your delivery, it's very reflective
i was just looking at this guys page on basketball reference the other day and i refresh my youtube to see this great timing
Imagine averaging 3 steals, finishing 4th in DPOY behind only 1 guard ….And still being all defensive 2ND team
great content........I can definitely say that he always played hard for the full 48mins
I love this channel man, thank you and keep up the great work!
I was excited as a young kid when robertson came to detroit in early 90s

Can you do Gerald Wallace? The Charlotte Bobcats only homegrown star. Probably the Bobcats best player ever unless you count Kemba Walker.

You need to do a episode on Paul Pressey also. His game was so smooth.
For my Lakers Vs Celtics on the sega genesis knows how much of a problem he was…but we lost him after Shaq punched him in in 1994😂😂
Yeah I was wondering when you was gonna get around to him. Also you mentioned Terry Cummings hmmm
Maybe the best defensive guard ever. You should do Jeff Teague
Sleepy Floyd next Plz
Robertson was tough as they came, not someone you wanted to step to.
Connie Hawkins aka The Hawk!!!!
Sadly people just remember him for fighting Shaq unfortunately

Didn't Gervin Spurs make the conference finals like 4 times?
a bit strange seeing someone other than Duncan wearing 21 for the Spurs
They also had Dominique Wilkins wear that number for them.

He is on the lost of less than a handful of players to finish with a quadruple double
Hey small little girl could u please do Orland Woolridge thank u very much.
Oscar Robinson next

Alvin Robertson should be in the H.O.F. He was a way better defensive player than Dennis Rodman
