Vintage George Gervin Highlights

- A compilation of some of George Gervin's NBA highlights while he played for San Antonio (because we will all try to forget that he played for the Bulls at the end of his brilliant career).
Maybe the smoothest scorer in NBA history, and his finger-roll has never been replicated since his retirement.

I was in an airport as a 7 year old with my Dad. A large african american man is standing to the side trying not to get noticed. My dad nudged me and said “ask that man if hes the ice man”. I walked up to him and asked and he smiled, imitates the finger roll and says “yes i am”
cool story
Amazing. The cultural impact this man had goes underappreciated. That Ice Man poster is still the coldest thing I've ever seen in print.
Awesome story!
I love it 💯💯💯💯
Cool ❤
The finger roll king
Has anybody else ever perfected the finger roll? Also nobody has tried to perfect Kareem's sky hook.
Dude had 7 to 12 layups a game. He was a smooth kat

It's amazing how the Iceman is always overlooked in the top players in NBA history. He was one of the smoothest scorers to ever play the game. Dr. J was the Michael Jordan of that era and George Gervin was like the Clyde Drexler of that era!
Dr J had better teammates, especially in Philly, than Iceman ever did.
He was so smooth he made things that should’ve looked difficult look like a routine play. Guys like that, ironically, get overlooked.
I think you mean that the other way around since Iceman and the Dr. J preceded them, and They were Jordan and Drexler's idols.
Absolutely no wasted motion the whole video...beautiful

@@Albyy75 Of course he is.
Iceman was one of the greatest scorer in this time. My favorite player.
Only Wilt and MJ have more scoring titles than Ice....let that sink in for a minute. He still holds the record for most points in a quarter.
@@iess2006 he's tied for 3rd bro what are you on💀
My bad guys....it's my fault since I don't watch today's NBA and it's spoiled "stars"...doesn't take away from Ice's greatness tho.
@@iess2006 spoiled how? Because of inflation and how the dollar works?
@@pierrecausemybladdersempty1678 It's good of u to bring up inflation, but that doesn't even come close to covering the difference in income between eras.
His finger roll was the equivalent to Jabbar’s sky hook.
Yep, couldn’t be blocked
His floaters where finger rolls, man this is sick people really think that he can’t come in an NBA today and do this stuff. Are you kidding me? He would ball today moves are moves
The nickname says it all "The Iceman" ; also one of the best posters ever, his Nike poster from back in the day; sitting on ice with the two ice basketballs; one in each hand; iconic poster!
Born in 99 but this my favorite old school player I found out about him while using the 80s spurs on 2k15 his jumpshot was wet af 😂
Me with Mark Price 💀

Same bro 99 gang grew up a spurs fan he’s one of the most underrated legends nowadays💯
George Gervin was an incredible player! He had some kind of magic touch and could make shots in heavy traffic in which you'd wonder how he could get the shot off. And uncanny with those bank shots!
Right! He made his money in the trenches. He averaged 30 a game in the paint in his prime.
I could watch Iceman highlights all day...he's one of the few legends I think I would enjoy meeting in person, along with Wilt. Love those colorful monikers...Doctor, Ice, Skywalker, Pistol...70s NBA is so underrated
MAN THANK YOU! this is sooo rare an 17 minute gervin highlight!!
if you accept requests, i'd like to see a bernard king highlight. the guy was also a beast scorer
I'm definitely taking requests. I want to make a Bernard King video eventually, but it will be a while. There's several other players like Alex English that I want to make a video for prior to a King video.
+PockyCandy Bernard King!!!! Pistol Pete, George Mc Ginnis, the DOCTOR, Andrew Toney, SIXERS V. CELTICS ...
PockyCandy Thanks 4 this. The Ice man shucks the Nice man.👍
The Iceman...one of the most underated and undermentioned players
Agreed on both
NBA street volume 2 is what got me to become huge Iceman and Dr. J fans. Bought both of their cards off of ebay back in the day because of it.
How old are you thats not true that's hes one of the all time scorers and in the Hall of fame why do folks use the word underrated on TH-cam so dang much is it trendy or something
@@anthonytaylor7928 Right on man thanks for sharing your opinion. But im sorry to inform that he is most definitely underrated and is rarely ever brought up or talked at all in sports media. They don't even bring him up when discussing great players from his own team but they frequently acknowledge Tim Duncan and Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili and IceMan was better than 2 out of the 3.
@@one7deep7savage7
I have always said that Iceman never had the support system the other superstars had and the only time he actually had a complete teammate (Jordan), his knees were shot from carrying the Spurs for all those years.
Such a beauty to watch him drive to the basket. So smooth and so talented.
accounts that upload raw footage without music make the basketball world go round. Invaluable work. Thanks Pocky Candy!
Thank you for watching the video. I should probably make more of these basketball video, but sadly they're much more difficult (and thus is MUCH more time-consuming) to make than football videos.
Great video thank you! Gervin not only was a great scorer but very efficient with a high FG %. He could score in droves without taking a ton of shots. This kind of skill was crafted by many hours shooting alone working on his game. Good stuff!
George Gervin was an amazing player who seemed to score at will and helped lay the foundation for the Spurs' later championships, and who else can finger roll as he did?
I think that with some tweaks the Spurs could have won titles in the Gervin era.
What do you mean who else can finger roll as he did????? he’s got the most basic fundamental layup package
@@mr.anderson1562 I tried doing his finger roll and let me tell ya, it is easy to do but difficult to get his finesse. It looks basic but it ain't.
They had a chance but blew a lead against the bullets but ice to me was the best player during the late 70s and early 80s
@@keithstoute4603 The refs robbed them in that 7th game with a phantom offensive foul on Billy Paultz.
Score at will ?? Mo cheeks exposed him lmao George leaves the ball infront of him to much to get stolen

This is a SPECIAL video of a tremendous player. Thanks!
i grew up watching The Iceman in the ABA...now That was something!
THIS IS AMAZING OVER TIME YOU CAN SEE THE RULES CHANGE IN THE NBA! history knowledge its so much being displayed here. Thank you for this video.
One of the smoothest if not the smoothest players. That finger role is as unique as Kareems skyhook. That wrist control and knack for scoring was incredible.
The Ice Man.... one of the greatest scorers the NBA has ever seen. Was unstoppable..... King of the Finger Roll...... Was fun to watch from the ABA... to the NBA...
A basketball Artist...the Ice Man has tons of Style..
The father of the FINGER ROLL!!!!
Actually that was Wilt, and then Doc, and maybe some Connie Hawkins in there too. Ice said all this in an interview once. But as he said to Wilt at the Top 50, he perfected it!
@@iess2006 You could have a point I saw Wilt do this in his early years he was also the original 7ft point guard he is the only one big man to have lead the league in assists.
@@dwightlove3704 LOL even Wikipedia says Wilt invented it....hope u enjoy the links, thanks for supporting the Iceman :) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_roll
@@iess2006 I bought his Spurs Jersey trying to get my hands on his Virginia Squires Jersey he played briefly with Dr.J thanks for the info.
@@dwightlove3704 Absolutely, Doc mentored Ice as a rookie at the Squires...they used to stay after practice and play one on one. Too bad there's no video of that!!! Search on the story of how Doc and Pistol almost played together for the Hawks, tragic! Doc tried to leave the ABA for the Hawks and it was blocked.
3:54 Now, that was Sweet! The right handed dribble, then the left, then to the hole, then the dunk!
Bro I’m only 27 so I never seen this dude play but WTF is this layup package he had. Godly lol. This shit looks so slow but he’s smooooth as hell lol. Dude was basically doing like finger roll floaters 🙏🏾
The finger roll was his thing. That, and his use of the bank shot
This is so much fun to watch. Thank You Pokey Candy!
The Iceman...my fav player of all time. Yes, I said it
I second that damn motion! Growing up everybody in my area was all about Dr J, but i was an Ice Cube! Didnt play a lick of D 🤣- but he was still my favorite player. Im always sending his highlights to youngsters i know.
On all of his layups he’s not even jumping high he just has that perfect touch FINGER ROLL
man those finger rolls are a thing of beauty.
My all-time B-ball idol coming up as a kid in the 70's...The Iceman cometh, The Iceman scoreth.
Bruhhh. This man was unreal. A layup artist!! Finger roll, backboard, floaters, didn’t matter what!!!
The "Iceman"!! One of the best scorers in the NBA!!!
1980s NBA. George Gervin and Bernard King were unstoppable.
And two of the most overlooked greats

Paul George reminds me a bit of Gervin. That laid back, economy of motion is just so satisfying to watch.
such a privilege to see him at the gym every time I go, He's there at least 3 times a week.
George Gervin plays basketball at your gym?
seb clot lol ya you’re not gonna just say that like it’s normal haha
@@imperialbengal4068 , that's crazy and awesome! What is it like playing with him? I bet he still has that smooth jumper. It's the stories that would excite me the most. He must have some great stories to tell.
Horace Grant used to work out at a gym I went to towards the end of his playing days. This would have been 2002 and 2003. He would never play with us though. He would just work out on machines. That was probably a good thing since nobody that played in our group was bigger than 6-5. He would have squashed us like bug.
he played with a chain on.!!!!!what the..... 😱😱😱😱😱
Tristan Davis trill nigga
+Tristan Davis; The Iceman hailed from the COLDEST hood in Detroit:Van Dyke @East Jefferson,so yes,he liked to rock his jewels even on the court!! Ole boy went to King highschool in southeast Detroit!!
Suprised a rapper didnt flip it "ballin like george gervin" I can see someone like 2 chainz doin that lol.
Norm Nixon did too when he played for the Lakers. That was something the cool cats in the NBA did back then. Even Jordon rocked a chain in his first or second dunk contest
@@leetate1963 And Jordan got it from the old Greyhound himself, Walter Davis of the Suns.
So smooth.
Always surprised me that no modern player mastered the finger roll like Gervin or the sky hook like Jabbar. Unstoppable.
I would say kyrie has pretty much mastered the finger roll and ur right no one has mastered the sky hook
Under the basket, sky hook, dunk, off the dribble, catch and shoot off of scattered picks, finger roll, three point shot, pull up on the fast break- this man could flat out score.
He made it look so easy. No elbows against defenders and no pushing to score.
He scored with ease.even before defender can do anything.
George was a scoring machine.
I enjoyed watching him since he came to San Antonio.playing with Spurs new ABA team.
Fun Fact: The Iceman's grandson, Cash, goes to m school, and his nickname is The Iceman. I actually had no idea that they were related until I searched him up, which is really cool
Gervin could score 40 on any given night and he could do it in todays NBA
Thank you pocky. That’s poetry in motion.
this man so good i thought i was watching the future
Gervin is too underrated. Him and David Robinson are probably the most underrated in nba history
Dr is not that great
@@johnathanali3075 lol
David Robinson was a great player, but he got dominated by both Arvidas Sabonis and Hakeem Olajuwon, which definitely hurts his all-time rating.
George Gervin -- one of the best. An ABA great before he, David Thompson, Julius Erving, Artis Gilmore and others proved the ABA was as great as the other league.
Better. ABA had soul.
Well said
ABA made up half the NBA All Star team the first year they joined. ABA was loaded with talent.
@bigred2880 Testify!
Cold as ice lol thanks for posting
One of my favorite players all-time. One of the greatest to ever come out of Detroit. He terrorized the DPS league when I was growing up. Notice on these highlights he's always torching the Lakers? LOL.
Truly one of the great scorers in the history of the NBA and ABA. HOF !

Ur comment is the third underrated comment on here that is so stupid he won many scoring titles in ABA and NBA Hall of famer

I always love watching Ice Man play. He was so smooth.
Here after watching RB the breakthrough
Same
Me,too but this Highlight is trash, George Gervin did a lot more than than basic Lay up drills.
That finger roll was nasty!!
The iceman always and forever. The snyd.
That little runner at 6:35 and again at 6:48 was my favorite! As a skinny teen in early 80s I replicated (tried to at least) that shot about 1,000 times on my hoop. In fact to this day i will pull that shot out at least once in every pick up game i play!
I know I'm gonna throw this. ABA highlights. Loved those ABA heroes, Erving, Issel, Gilmore, Gervin, Barry, etc
The best way to explain Gerorge Gervin is that he was the “Michael Jordan” before Joran hit the league. When he was on you had no chance 1 on 1 so teams would have to double down on him (and many times he’d beat that)! He was one smooth mother with his shot….often making ghe impossible possible. One of my favorites all time (and I’m a Celtics fan from Massachusetts). Like Orr in hockey, when he came to town you didn’t want to miss the game for he’d often do something you never saw before. He really was one of the best!!!
Ice beat the dbl down every night. Pat Riley introduced the triple down at key moments to slow Gervin down. I would say the triple down and Norm Nixion hurt the Spurs most during those Lakers/Spurs playoff series in the early 80s. Even with all the HoFers the Lakers had during the period, the Spurs pretty much handled them. McAdoo, off the bench was a problem as well.
Everyone was Jordan before Jordan lmao. Dr.J, Eligin Baylor, Connie Hawkins, David Thompson, now George I've heard it all blah blah blah blah
@@catcountry0099 , Jordan, an above average talent who tutored under superior ball players then dominated 2 younger generations of boys, with no father at home, hoping to eat corn flakes like Mike one day. Excellent Video "Pock"!!! One of the nicest out there on ICE!!!
One of the greatest scorers of all time alongside David Thompson who's also pretty forgotten.
He is one of the most underrated players of all time
Yep
How many times was he an all star? How many scoring titles did he have? Maybe he wasn't an NBA champion but he had an hall of fame career how is that underrated ? I swear some folks use that word in the wrong context it's an insult to his career I'm quite he wouldn't like u saying he was underrated
Also hes a hall of famer and was voted one of the fifty best players of all time how is that underrated? Underrated is when ur good at something and don't get recognized for it or receive any accolades this is not the case
@@anthonytaylor7928 He's underrated in the context that his amazing accomplishments, and even his identity aren't known by as many casual basketball fans as they should be.
70s basketball is lost in time...
Gervin was thin and didn't blow you away with quickness or athleticism, but was very skilled around the basket with his finger rolls and floater shots. He had a smooth jumper and was a good free throw shooter. 4 time NBA scoring champion!!
yo! pep game,I did not realize George Garvin was this cool. looking at these highlights. he was Good very good.I've heard of him, but never really got into him. he could score on anyone. his game is or was, very nice!
I shook his hand tonight at the Pearl in San Antonio. Be cool Ice!!

The iceman was so smooth!!
His running lay up is beautiful👍🏾
Dr. J and George Gervin were silky smooth. They made basketball look easy and fun.
Gervin was wild, man just threw that shit up and it went in, insane talent 😤
52% FG CAREER. 1 OUT OF 2 SHOTS WAS A BUCKET. HE DIDN'T JUST THROW IT UP.
Ice was efficient and smooth around that basket.4 time NBA scoring champion.

My favorite player of all time
man the league sure did look super physical back then....
The 90s were physical. The late 70s early 80s NBA stylistically was meh
@@jwtt9000 80s were more physical..90s made rule changes and was less physical
Man could he drive the lane like nobody's business! Great days at Hemisphere Arena.
You definitely had to pick Ice up from about mid-court....Top 3 favorite player of mine. Love watching him play.
Gervin was just silky smooth ~ efficient and effortless Scoring Machine.
Hard to stop because its like he is shooting a floater..so he starts his shot early and he is tall...similar to the way a sky hook works...man unstoppable
no one will ever be duplicating his finger roll...amazing shot
"He goes the distance and blows it. Rebound to Gervin, he won't blow it."
In today's game that would have been a $50,000 fine, a two week Network suspension, and 3 free throws for Harden. 😭
The Iceman was very underappreciated as he played in the NBA where you could get clothesline or basically mugged during the game! Imagine the iceman playing in today's game! I would had love to see Iceman and Pistol Pete in today's game! All records would be broken!
I watched him light up Phoenix for 44 in San Antonio. He was so smooth.
George Gervin. He made the fingertip roll a beautiful thing.
Totally Sick player!✊
What makes him deadly is that upward jump. When he drives into the lane, he jumps upward instead of forward. That allows a simple stop and lay. He was also driving inside so the post d might've been ready but then he stops and lays, catching the d off guard
RB Brought me here
Facccctttss
Those hook shots on Kareem were cold. He was stunned.
Purest layup package!..
Awesome control on that finger roll in heavy traffic
Fine video but any highlight video of the Ice Man is incomplete if it doesn't include his ABA days.
People don't realize these highlights was when he was older. George and Dr J was on a team in Virginia that would've ran ANY NBA team out of the gym...Gervin would drop 47 and not even sweat.
You mean back then ?
@@SKAMGOD With the defensive rules today and that team averaging 137 points a game or more, without hand checking etc, they would be a problem even Today. No load management and the newest shoes ...
@@manonanisland2712 you can’t honestly believe that their skill set would translate in today’s game. Today’s athletes are stronger, faster, smarter, and healthier then back then. I love The ice mans game or else I wouldn’t be here. That finger roll was beautiful. These guys really paved the way for what we’re seeing today, no question. But innovation is a real thing and doesn’t just apply to technology. We get better, it’s what we do my good man
@@SKAMGOD You do realize that George Gervin lead the league in scoring 4 times in 5 years starting in 76. That was years after his Virginia Squires days with Dr J, He also played in Spain post NBA and averaged 28 ppg. and he was 38 or 39 years old. I wouldn't dare say that about Football, but these strong, healthier and athletic players of today still can't shoot and the Virginia Squires with Dr and ice would run today's Knicks and Bulls out of the gym for sure. I played well pass my prime against way younger more athletic Guy's I can't count the times I heard don't leave Uncle open, you need to push up on Uncle he can shoot. I watched Danny Green air ball wide open jumpers in the finals, we can both agree it would be interesting at least. Be safe crossover !
@@manonanisland2712 I didnt know that and that’s really impressive. I guess my over all point would be that on average the league is better now. Meaning if you take an average player from back then and an average player from today who do you think would be better?these kids today have so many weapons due to the evolution of the game. There will always be exceptions with greats that stand out, but if the overall competition is lower doesn’t that take away from the comparison of today’s game? I mean does anyone really think Wilt would of drop a 100 today?
