Bill Walton, basketball legend and San Diego resident, rails on how city has handled homelessness

  • Former NBA star Bill Walton took part in a news conference Tuesday morning with the Lucky Duck Foundation to address the issue of homelessness in San Diego.
Though the event was to call attention to a new Lucky Duck Foundation initiative, which will routinely grade the county's 18 regional leaders on the job they're doing when it comes to addressing homelessness, Walton took aim at Mayor Todd Gloria once again.

I mean republican states are by in large useless to America with the exception of Texas. Where Democrat states can be progressive to a point of failure, republican states refuse to change to the point where they all but die.
Texas is probably the greatest Republican state and they don't even have a reliable power grid in times of crisis. Civilians couldn't get power and the ones that did got charged a 💩ton for running heat instead of freezing.
America across the board has a stagnant government problem and its the citizens fault. Everyone has willingly opted into republican vs Democrat bs and depending on what side you pick, you blame literally everything on the other side and ignore your own parties faults. If Americans stopped fanboying parties and instead voted for people who actually got things done regardless of party alliegence, then the country might actually improve.
      Won't happen though
Edit: last thing. America is a country that's built on invidualism (selfishness). There should always be a healthy amount of individualism to avoid people getting abused on an individual level. But Americans all seem to believe "my way or the highway" there is no compromise and most of them don't seem like they want to sacrifice anything for the betterment of the country. If life has to be worse in some areas for it to be better overall it ain't worth it to most Americans.

About 20 homeless ex-construction workers(jobless), hair stylist(shopless), an arborist who writes a column in a Silicon Valley shopper magazine(full-time jobless), a couple veterans, a prostitute, and various other local alchoholics, lived under four county bridges. I fed them homemade soup once per week for three years..... the least I could afford to do. So--- I got a good feeling about the "haves" attitudes and the "have-nots".
At age 70 I am slipping into poverty, myself. I know how poorly my community thinks of me now. I don't drink, drugs, swear, fart, or smell. My kindness was labeled as "aiding and abutting those people".

I tore into a house in Laurelhurst, a neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, to build an addition for friends. As I pulled the drywall down, 1st day, with customers present, there was Bill Walton. doing a jump shot, on the front page of The Oregonian. Hand written, “was a note”, from the previous contractor that read: The dollar is worth about a quarter now, it will probably be worth about a nickel, by the time you read this.
I believe he was close to right.

It is not easy to solve this problem. The costs of living in San Diego has increased so much. Land is so expensive. No one wants a homeless shelter next to them or even in their neighborhood. The weather in San Diego allows homeless to live year round. The homeless taking over parks, beaches, etc. is not ok. Our Governor had a surplus of $97 billion. Spending money and buying property and building studios, and 1/2 bedroom units for the homeless would help. They would have to built withing 1 or 2 blocks of mass transit stations. Rules would have to be followed and enforced. I have heard of people who were given housing but left because the others around him were too rude and noisey. I lived in San Diego and was born there. I was living there in Pacific Beach for 20 years before moving away last year. It was bad then, and obviously worse now. I didn't vote for Todd Gloria for Mayor. I didn't like what his work while in State Government.

Todd Gloria didn’t cause this problem. Nobody complained when we had those do nothing republican mayors, or Governors. This didn’t happen overnight. Blame Ronald Reagan! That’s where it started. He shut down all the mental hospitals and funding for mental health clinics. He strangled assistance for the poor. People need to read history.
