I really feel so sad for the mom Ashley. She was abused physically and mentally by the bio Dad. She lost a child, Carly’s baby sister. And then her remaining daughter kills her. Very tragic.

My granddaughter picked her scalp and cut herself. She is the sweetest girl but I got her help. She was NOT on medications. But she also did not have access to guns or knives for a long time. My granddaughter had been through a lot in her first 5.5 years of life. She is also an honor student and graduated high school currently in college. i monitored her text messages and all cell phone activity. Parents needs to watch and talk to their children. I can't understand why they wouldn't have hid/locked the gun to protect Carly from herself. Wouldn't that be any parent's first thought when you find out your child has clinical depression and possibly other disorders and is switching meds? For a "smart family", not that smart.

The fact that she sent her stepdad that text and waited for him is not an act of insanity, it's premeditated murder. She recognized him and planned to shoot him & he didn't recognize her because she just shot her mom and planning to shoot him. Most likely rage & adrenaline on her face, not a mental illness. She recognized her friend who came over. Telling her friend to run demonstrates she knew that it was wrong & well aware of the consequences. An insane person would've shot the friend, at the police, etc., or not tried to escape at all because she wouldn't have understood she needed to run. A mentally ill person, like a schizophrenic, doesn't choose when, who, where, or what they hallucinate about. Same for Bipolar psychosis. Point blank, hard to comprehend, but she's a cold blooded killer.

She was having a psychotic break... She was not suffering from a lack of IQ. Her thoughts were directing her action. In addition, she was smoking pot, which can make those delusions even worse. Teen years and early 20s are sometimes the onset of schizophrenia and the first psychotic break. cutting is often a signal of extreme depression and rage... Her parents may not have understood the seriousness of her moods because she is a teenager and that's kind of normal...very sad...

Yes, a 15years old healthy normal child. That's a kid to whom a lot of damage has been done. She needs a proper help, of course not with walking home, like nothing happend. But in jail she won't get ANY psychological help. And ... 4ever. Till the end.
And the defense wanted to be granted to bring Ashley's mother to the court, but day missed the date for 1day and her mother would bring up some Isusses that ashley also had.. she was also bipolar - and when she was 14 she also had to pull a gun out of her daughters hand.. those are facts that weren't aloud to be brought up , because they missed that 1 fuckin*g day. So carlys genes were messed up from her dad and her mum.. and no one else could bring that up then their parents, otherwise it would be hearsay. They were not aloud to mantion it. And the defence attorneys did it pro bono.. cause ms.Todd had also a brother with menthal health issues to whom were given different pills.. and he changed so much.. and one day he also pointed a gun at their mother .. the mother said : in his eyes i saw something different and i didnt know if he is going to shot me or not. Next day he committed suicide. So ms. todd is aware that medication can do harm to teenagers and others.. and wanted to help her. And because that trial happend within 6months.. really quick.. they didnt have the time and money to make a extra brain scan on Carly.. where you can see , her brain is not functioning right. And the attorneys aren't aloud to provide that money. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Even if they wanted to. Knowing all that cause after the trial ms.Todd gave an interview online. I agree. They’re more likely to hurt themselves than other people. It actually pisses me off when people want to use it as an excuse and explanation of a crime with no legit foundation for it. This only feeds into the stigma of mental health. My daughter works at a mental health/crisis clinic and the biggest problem they have with their clients is the stigma where other people believe they’re dangerous. Including staff at shelters. One of our sons has psychosis. Again, he’s not dangerous to others he’s a danger to himself. Tho it’s not to say it can’t happen it’s just not likely.

I disagree. We know that a huge percentage of prison populations are mentally ill. It is what causes a lot of crimes & it is why the idea of prison doesn’t stop people from committing crimes. The fact that others are mentally ill and don’t commit crimes means nothing. It’s like saying drunk drivers aren’t an issue because most drunk drivers don’t wreck and hurt others.
The issue is that we aren’t willing to look at mental illness in that population and do more to prevent crimes based on those contributing factors.
If we all collectively ignore mental health as a major contributing factor, we can’t fix it. We have a system that can only punish people after a crime & that is a problem.
The drugs Carly was on likely caused all of this, it is linked to suicidal and homicidal behaviors. These drugs aren’t suitable for children. Does that mean she should be free? No. But if we took it seriously we’d be less likely to prescribe to children in the future, perhaps reducing similar incidents. Isn’t that the point? Less crime or do we just enjoy sending kids to prison for life?

To all those thinking that mental illness should have been a component of this crime… I am a diagnosed and being treated for depression & anxiety for about 15 years now. I also have PTSD. I was also married to a horrible narcissist and have a narcissistic mother. Never have I ever never thought to harm anybody, never. This whole mental illness causes this type of aggression is totally ridiculous. Most of us that suffer are very withdrawn, timid, and, afraid of the outside world. I wish these people would stop telling garbage like this and disrespecting and insulting the real ones that suffer from this horrible mental disease. I know other sufferers & they are the same as me. That’s why there’s still a huge stigma around Mental Illness & why we try to hide. Because you all think we’re nuts but we’re not. Most of us have been through a lot & most of us are sensitive, empaths & very intuitive . Which can be really be a curse sometimes.

Just about every mental health diagnosis-PTSD, Bipolar, OCD, Major Depressive Disorder, etc.-can present with psychotic symptoms. It’s true that the majority of people with these diagnoses are not harmful to others, but there are still people who are. I worked on an inpatient forensic psych unit for people being evaluated for competency and NGRI defenses and I’ve seen people who are without a doubt cold-blooded killers and I’ve seen others who are truly horrified by what they’ve done and others who will never be able to stand trial because they are just gone and not coming back. We (and I say we because I have a PTSD diagnosis as well) can’t demonize others who share our diagnoses with a “If I’m not dangerous then they shouldn’t be either.” There are extremes to every diagnosis that don’t leave people with choices. (None of this is in reference to this particular case…just in general.)

Want to give my opinion before I hear yours. I am a retired career federal prosecutor. Thought state did a great job and loved the judge. Don’t think there is reversible error as to guilt. BUT…I think it was gross legal malpractice for the defense to not present evidence re: sentencing! Come on! Put on witnesses about adolescent minds, maturity levels, witnesses who love Carly who plead for her, others who know her, etc. Inexcusable and If appellate court doesn’t review it on direct appeal, they will on collateral appeal. I see a new sentencing in her future.

I saw numerous either professional failures on the defense side or personal failures where skill training in public speaking would go a long way toward believing the male defense attorney. He sounded unconfident in his client and his position. Why would the jury believe him when he doesn't seem to believe what he is saying. They both ignored Carly crying after the verdict was read before sentencing. They both looked indifferent to Carly and could care less that she was so distressed. Did they not prepare her. These failures are just a few I noticed, not having watch the entire trial. The jury was likely tainted toward Carly by the demeanor of her inept counsel.

So it’s nice to visit in Florida but I find it more peaceful here, just a ferry boat away from Seattle. By the way I am bipolar 2 and 61. I was diagnosed at 43. I struggled with mood changes, anxiety, and severe depression since 16. I unfortunately agree with the verdict. I am responsible for my actions and bipolar illness should never be an excuse. I made a lot of bad decisions and hated taking meds. I take them now everyday and will until I end my adventure here. I never had the benefit of counselors or medication or even talking about mental illness. I did what I had to do to survive. It was hard for me and my family. I’ve been married 31 years now. If i am presented with a young person and told "this is a child" i will think YOU are crazy if you turn around and say "but now i want you to only see an adult".
