Hitch-22 - Christopher Hitchens, God And Cancer. Anderson Cooper's interview, CNN AC360°, 5 August 2010, with author and outspoken atheist Christopher Hitchens on his cancer diagnosis and whether it has changed his thoughts on God.

Anderson Cooper: "I just flew down to Washington to talk with author Christopher Hitchens. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in June, and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Many people upon receiving a cancer diagnosis would ask 'why me?' Hitchens's answer, is 'why not me?' Much of his hair has fallen out, but he seems strong as ever. We discussed whether his diagnosis has in any way altered his well-known opinion of religion and prayer."

Books of The Times: In Memoir, Christopher Hitchens Looks Back
    (Review by Dwight Garner)
... "Hitch-22 - A Memoir" traces Mr. Hitchens's coming of age as a public intellectual and as a man, and charts the long and serrated arc of his thinking about politics, from his early days as a militant member of the International Socialists to his gradual drift toward positions, like his support for the Iraq War, that have made some on the left scratch their heads.
Anyone who's closely read Mr. Hitchens's work - including his best-selling manifesto "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" (2007) - or seen him do battle on cable news programs, knows that he has a mind like a Swiss Army knife, ready to carve up or unbolt an opponent's arguments with a flick of the wrist. He holds dear the serious things, the things that matter: social justice, learning, direct language, the free play of the mind, loyalty, holding public figures to high standards.
His mental Swiss Army knife also contains, happily, a corkscrew. Mr. Hitchens is devoted to wit and bawdy wordplay and to good Scotch and cigarettes (though he has recently quit smoking) and long nights spent talking. He is also devoted to friendship. "Hitch-22" is among the loveliest paeans to the dearness of one's friends - Mr. Hitchens's close ones include Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and the poet James Fenton - I've ever read. The business and pleasure sides of Mr. Hitchens's personality can make him seem, whether you agree with him or not, among the most purely alive people on the planet.
"Hitch-22" does a sleek, funny job of rolling out his life story. He was born in 1949 in Portsmouth, into a less-than-bookish family: his father was a career navy man. Mr. Hitchens was precocious. According to family legend, his first complete sentence was "Let's all go and have a drink at the club." ...

Does this mean we cannot calculate how long it takes for Pluto to orbit the Sun? Does this mean we don't know whether it existed at all before it was discovered? Does this mean we cannot be certain that it has completed well over 18 Million orbits around the Sun since the formation of our solar system?
Quit listening to the likes of Ken Ham when they try (desperately) to make some sort of significant distinction between "observed science" and "historical science" - they are poisoning your mind with this specious garbage. Yeah, staying true to the end. When you die that is it. Nothing afterwards. We are just meat machines, ambling on for a time, and then failing. My Dad was like that. He saw death too often to think that there was something special or magical. You grab a chicken and cut it's head off. The chicken wanted to live, but you killed it to eat it. My Dad just shrugged and said now you are "Mr. F******"

Saying that after you die is just nothingness is a simple, sad, and bleak way of looking at life. If you take in account the vastness of the universe and the complexity if everything in it, in my opinion when you pass, your body decays away but your soul (or inner conscience) steps into another dimension. From there there's infinate possibilities to where your next journey will begin.

I met Hitchens in Washington, D.C. as a young journalist. A group of us were invited to his house to speak to him late in the morning. When we arrived he had forgotten about the meeting and he was hung over and had to get out of bed. He was still brilliant despite feeling run down and he spoke to us in his usual manner. It was the true authentic Hitchens,, funny, insightful, honest, and hung over. I remember his apartment had framed pictures not hung up on the walls but leaning against the baseboards. Esophageal cancer is a tough cancer especially at this time--today, if they catch it in time there is greater hope. But back then, not much by the time they discover it. No doubt drinking and smoking contributed to his developing his primary tumor. I didn't know that his father had it, probably also a drinker and smoker, but he should have been monitored with frequent endoscopies. That would have saved him. A lesson for everyone. We have become a society that accepts routine colonoscopy but they should also do endoscopy at the same time. Takes literally 10 minutes.

Hard to argue against the term "brave" and perhaps even "honesty" but the term "undeluded" implies absolute knowledge of the truth which neither Mr Hitchens, Mr Monkey, or the Pope can claim since there is still a great deal for humans to learn. Respectfully would say that hope for our species is best represented by those who can simultaneously stay true to reason and logic while staying humble and open to the idea of an omniscient divine consciousness responsible for the Universe, the science we humans understand and have yet to understand, and of the ultimate truth itself. I appreciate Mr Hitchens since he stimulated thinking about how science and faith in God can coexist. "Brave and honest" humans with a full commitment and respect for science and reason have arrived at different conclusions than Mr Hitchens and that is ok. No need to imply they are deluded unless one is feeling insecure. Surely real people of faith genuinely prayed for Hitchens for all the right reasons - just wanted the best for him whether he agreed with them or not. And that is something that truly gives us hope for our species.

    • @MrMonkeyInk
      @MrMonkeyInk ปีที่แล้ว

@@getreal7217 “Undeluded” does not imply ‘absolute knowledge’. To be delududed, after all, is to be under the sway of a delusion, which is an ‘informatinally positive” state. Unlike Hitchens, it seems fair to catagorize the Pope as positively deluded. Faith, after all, is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” and the Pope, if nothing else, has faith. Hitchens, on the other hand, did not seem assured of the existence of things merely because he hoped for them. Neither was he convinced by things for which there was no good evidence. I would say that he stayed true to reason and logic while staying humble and open to the idea of an omniscient divine consciousness responsible for the Universe. He certainly entertained the idea of an omniscient divine consciousness responsible for the Universe, he just found no good evidence for such a thing and had the courage to accept the consequences of this lack of evidence.

lives on. All souls will spend eternity somewhere and the way we lived
our lives while we were here on this earth will be a testament to where we end up.
It will be too late when we die to ask "what was life about," so while we are alive here
and now, we must respond sooner or later to *The One* who made us, to *the One* who gives

My mom and my dad both died from cancer and we were able to have a moment to say good bye and express how much we loved each other. I don't feel as if something was left unsaid or hanging that's about as much closure as you're going to get. My brother died unexpectedly in his early 40s but, again, I had seen him quite recently and we had a good visit and we both said we love each other and hugged when we departed. To ask the question "so you don't pray at all" is very telling. As an atheist you rather get the feeling religious people don't actually believe you're an atheist, and that somehow when things go wrong you start believing all of a sudden. I can tell you it's quite the opposite: it doesn't cross our minds at all.

@@stysner4580 *"Yes because non of the killing that's going on in the world right now is religiously motivated right"*
It IS "religiously" motivated! But there is something that you do NOT understand about "religion". There is ONLY two that have the title of "God".
      1. The God of the bible.
      2. The god of this world. Aka: the devil.
The God of the bible has but one name. Jesus the Messiah.
All the other gods and practices are all different names for the 1 god of this world. (the devil)
And if you care to notice, neither Islam, nor Judaism, worship Jesus the Messiah.
Jesus the Messiah willingly shed His 'sinless' blood in order to cover our sinful blood.
The wages of sin, is death. Hell is simply eternal death. No one "sends" us there. It's simply the 'wages' we have all earned thru our sin.
In the bible we read in 1John 2:22 "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son."
This means that anyone who rejects the 'sinless' blood of Jesus for any reason whatsoever... IS 'worshiping the devil.
And when we die, our soul will reside with the God we freely chose to worship in this world.
So 'believe' whatever you want. But these are the very last days, and you are on the devils side... knowingly, or Un-knowingly.
You still have time to change your mind, but if you do NOT want what Jesus the messiah is offering you... His salvation will NOT be "forced" upon you.
      It's your choice! NOT Gods.

His millions of books sold cannot be unread, the millions of views of his spectacular oratory cannot be unseen, and his intellectual honesty, where whether right or wrong he studied the arguments of his opponents in order to further sharpen his own, is a standard to which we all should aspire. His is the stellar example to anyone who cares to distinguish in their own minds the difference between received dogma and hard wrought knowledge. His eyes may be closed but millions of others have been opened. I am grateful to have been exposed to such a mind as his. I only wish it had happened in my youth where I was surrounded by superstitious nonsense.

With all due respect, it's amazing that you can listen to that and come away with that conclusion. Even though he admitted there were Christian people praying for his doll. Even after he spent his whole life attacking them and even in his last days. He still attacked ridiculed and put down people. And you talk about a hateful god Hitchins was full of hate Even in his last days. Could not even bring himself who appreciate people who are praying for him. . No, Christian ever forced anybody to do anything. In fact, even saying that shows how ignorant you are of true Christianity. Maybe you're talking about islam. You are free to choose or 32 walk away god does not force anybody. It's called free will. It's amazing how backwards your thinking is. I don't care if you're a christian or not but this is common sense. Even in his last moments he can't help himself. Ask yourself this question According to Hitchins, this is all an accident a happens. Tance, random, there's no meaning nothing means anything well. That means that it doesn't matter if he has cancer and it doesn't matter about his kids or how it affects anybody yet he would like to live on . Why? Why does it matter? Why is it unfair if he dies his whole world? View claims that not means anything anyway. If there's no meaning or final meaning to anything, then nothing means anything. He shouldn't even care that he's dying. It's all an accident which if that were true. How would he evencome conscious of that thought. He dedicated his entire life to attacking christians and most of the time he miscarrived and things he said weren't even factually true , just generally speaking. I feel bad for him I don't hate him at all. Spending your life attacking people Is an oxymoron. It's not that he just god he did not want there to be a god. I sincerely believe if Jesus Christ himself walked into the room and Hitchins knew for sure. It was God. He still would reject him. He spent his whole lif attacking Trying to convince anyone he could. His air against would not even allow him to admit he was wrong. A smart man with talent wasted. Imagine what good he could have done if he would have used his talents productively. If you don't believe there's a god , why would you spend your whole life fighting something that you don't think is real. Does that make sense to anybody of course not. I don't want to talk ill of a man who has passed away. But I'm sorry. I have never heard one argument out of his mouth. That I felt was strong or convincing in any way and I looked. I feel bad for his family. According to him, nothing means anything so there is no right wrong. There is no sad or good. There's nothing you know I bet he doesn't feel that way now. You can believe what you want , but if you care anything about the truth , just once try thinking for yourself. It's a lot easier to not think for yourself but just try it once. Rest in peace mister hitchens I hope god had mercy on your soul. The man who was fighting evil in his own mind was insulting. People praying for his well-being After He dedicated his life To attack those people. And you sit there and say oh, he's the real good guy. Everyone else is the evil ones. He doesn't even know what a real christian is and I suspect you don't either. His idea of stopping evil or hate according to him, was to spread evil and hate. Does that sound like wisdom to you. You can be an atheist if you want to vet your choice but to be proud of it. There's nothing to be proud of not believing in something. And by the way, the the first atheist state officially Soviet Union that atheistic super good government is responsible for approximately. Fifty to sixty million deaths. And since communism is based off of atheism , an anti god that belief system has killed more people than any other system ever , and that's not debatable. So I'm glad you're proudof a view. An ideology that has no respect for human life. Who itselfaccess god very funny how they don't believe in god yet they wanna be god. I guaranteeyou couldn't give me 5 reasons. Why you're an atheistas if you sat down and thought about it logically? I seriously doubt it. I already know the answers you would give it's the same ones everyone else gives. I could give you many reasons why I believe in a creator without even mentioning the bible. You actually have more face and I do. It takes a hack of a lot more faith to believe that this was all an accident. Then it does to believe in a creator the things you you have to believe are so mathematically impossible. It's actually absurd to even believe it. Because if everything is random and just an accident that would include every thought. In your head, it's all just random chemicals. Bouncing against each other, creating random thoughts that mean nothing. I believe my brain was designed for thinking. Reasoning and logic does not mean i'm always right but I believe my brain was Designed to think and reason. Your brain apparently just came together I happened dance Which would mean it's not designed or created to think which means that there is no reason for you to Believe any thought you have. I guess every morning when you get Into your caryou just assume that a bunch of metal somehow fell together and accidentally created this thing. It happens to be able to drive you around. I mean it's not like you can look at it and tell it was designed . When you look at a mountain, can you tell the difference between it? A regular mountain and mount rushmore. Do you assume that somehow accidentally for human faces? That were all presidents just happened By chance. I hope that it's funny how you can look at that and go well. Obviously that was designed even though you have no idea who did it. But when it comes to human beings in the complexity of the brain and dna. Somehow you just think that was an accident. You atheist claim to be so intelligent , but if you think about it , what you claim to believe is so illogical , you have more faith than I do by far. But i'm glad you're proud. Like you said, the Christians can keep their mean. God like were the bad ones and you're the good ones. Of course, I'd like to know where you even get the concept of good bad moral immoral. Because atheism, in no way can explain the concept of morality at all.. There's no such thing. It's just your opinion. I guess. But somehow you believe that there's right and wrong. Well, if there's no God, then anything goes. There is no right and wrong. Actually, Christianity at its foundation is about how to live. What is right and wrong? So you're actually stealing from Christianity to argue for atheism.. And that makes sense to you.? Your ideas are things you are told and you never stopped to think for yourself. In fact you don't have any ideas ideas have you. You have a responsibility to think for yourself. As a human being. I don't care what you were taught. And if you think I didn't do that well that's exactly what I did.

I DO NOT espouse the rhetoric of the Bible that describes "God" as a vengeful, hateful, spiteful sadist who would kill all of his creation at the slightest infraction. This is my argument: How can a "compassionate, forgiving" God destroy all that he has created? To this, my Christian brothers (yes, I do count myself among them) often answer, "You see, God is like a father, our father in heaven. And often times parents have to punish their children when they do wrong." My response? "BUT WHEN CHILDREN DO WRONG, DO THEIR PARENTS KILL THEM??"
