@@DeadnWoon yes, this is what I usually say. If you can't pronounce "ы", start from "i" from words like "stir, stick, will" etc. It's pretty close and you will be understood perfectly.

Try my tip: pronounce the more familiar и, a sound that requires your tongue to be stretched to the sides so that the sides of the tongue touch the grinding teeth. Then, without releasing very much tension, narrow your tongue so that the sides of the tongue don't touch anything, but the tongue is still not very far back as in у.
Would be VERY helpful if the Cyrillic letter was shown prominently, so we could associate the sound with the letter and not just the phonetic sign as we listen. GREAT explanation though!!😻
+Homura Akemi soft vowels does not exist) there are vowels, which indicate the preceding consonant soft) so, soft cons. are followed by these vowels or the soft sign)) remaining cons. are hard)
Hanna Jenkins. Hello! I am an Indian. I happened to see your there-year old comment about the pronunciation of Russian hard " i ". It's true. I don't know whether you are continuing with Russian. Still, I wanted to suggest a way out for hard " i " problem. Please keep a pencil horizontally between your lips and try to pronounce any single syllable word with hard " i ". The pencil naturally obstructs the tounge and it's middle part is raised back producing the sound of hard " i ". After 4 or 5 times remove the pencil and try without it. Anyone can get the required sound. Wish you good health and success. Greetings from India!
Aspects of this video are good but it progressed way to quickly. Also the diagram of the mouth and the articulation points, its not even clearly explained. Is there some kind of explanation of what that diagram means?
Вообще-то у нас около 20 гласных оО. А всего звуков около 60 (по некоторым подсчетам, даже 70 оО). А теперь приятная новость иностранцам: на слух русские распознают от силы 50 звуков, остальное - результат беглой устной речи. Но, пытливый слух при случае сможет услышать акцент)
Hello Linda Alvarez-Thull, In accordance with Russian pronunciation rules, [o] in the unstressed position should be pronounced as [a], and in stressed position as [o]. Team RussianPod101.com

This video is completely misleading and I don't advise anyone on following anything it states, most notoriously that the "soft indicating" vowels are different sounds - they aren't, they stand for the same sound and when following a consonant, they only define the sound of that consonant which in return may or may not change the vowel's sound slightly. The [j] is only there when no consonant is preceding them, as is evident from the video.

Ы is definitely the most foreign to me. I can get really close but I keep wanting to pronounce it as И.
It is very close to i in English words like 'this', I suppose.
@@DeadnWoon yes, this is what I usually say. If you can't pronounce "ы", start from "i" from words like "stir, stick, will" etc. It's pretty close and you will be understood perfectly.
@@IgoArs the i's in those three words are actually three different sounds but I got what you mean.
Say “ew” while but don’t move or round your lips

Very well explained. Excellent video!!! 😌👌🏼
yeah I needed to find this a year ago
I thought the unstressed O sounded exactly the same as A, and that A was always pronounced the same way but apparently not
It does as in milk in Russian
Unstressed O is pronounced the same as British "bud".
I couldn't pronounce the ы sound
It will get easier and you are more likely to pronounce it correctly the more you attempt to pronounce it.
Star Quake yeаh thаt shit is hаrd mаn..try speking like а dork to pronounce this voшеl it шorks for me..but аgаin stаnd аlone voшеls аre eаsier to pronounce thаn into шords
It has a similar pronunciation to the letters U+I In English

I think you should try to pronounce the "oo" sound (as in foot) and then try to pronounce "g" (as in goat) but don't say it all the way.
how good to be fluent polish, the russian pronunciation is pretty easier for me.
ы is the most difficult, it's pretty hard to achieve this pronunciation for me
Inekoto Setsu It is easy. Say Ыsy instead of easy. It’s not dыfficult!
Maybe it's just me, but I think it's quite the i vowel from words like 'this'.

I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!!
thanks for the lesson the most difficult vowel is ы
Around 7:00, I don't hear any difference in the "rustle" sound and the "about" sound.
Very good lesson ❤
all of them are not so hard, what is hard is to know when you have to use one or another. rules, right?
Ы is so hard!!
Evan Jaquez the ones that get me are ь and ъ
ы is hard vowel. it's strong.
ы is easy
cause im russian xd
Its almost like the i in igloo
Any videos to learn Russian pronunciation without English explanations?
this is amazing. thanks so much.
now i can finally pronounce Ы! большое спасибо!
Best way to learn a language is to learn it with a pretty girl, thank you Katya you doubled the fun in learning Russian
What is the difference between all the 'a' sounds? Like the O looking A and the A looking A? Is there even a difference?
Effective lesson.
Спасибо большое
A lot of the Russian-English vowels that you claimed to be "indentical" actually aren't identical, only similar.
Very nice
Спасибо
This video is good!! However I still wanna know the pronunciations of the combination of the consonants.
"shch" is hard to differentiate from a simple "sh" for me
so, I can pronounce them all without struggles.. but when do I know when to use them?
¿El inglés tiene más sonidos vocálicos entonces?
+Wilhelm McCluskey No, el russo tiene más, seguramente!!
tenemos los mismos en español, sólo no le dimos letras particulares (a parte de la ñ) n_n
Tienen los mismos solo que dependiendo la palabra cambian su sonido, por ejemplo aveces la e suena "e" y otras veces suena "i".
7:36 дерева. это просто произносит /e/, да? it doesnt sound /jI/.
In дерево j merges with the r, making the r soft
So how do you know if it is a hard or soft vowel sound if it is written the same?
+Homura Akemi soft vowels does not exist) there are vowels, which indicate the preceding consonant soft) so, soft cons. are followed by these vowels or the soft sign)) remaining cons. are hard)
Ы и И нужно произносить в контрасте друг с другом, что бы они могли это уловить. И нужно привести примеры, типа bit (быт), beat (бит).
PhoeneticFanatic, IPA alphabet
For me ы was definitely the hardest.

Well no surprise if I say the ы sound is the most difficult. In my language, French, there is nothing similar, as the opposite as the other vowels :)

Where is the next video, "Russian Consonant Sounds Pt.1"?
Why in Lesson 3 is the vowel "e" pointed the wrong way like a "3" e.g. 3to, because that letter has a "ze" sound?
I think that was not the same symbol as 3 /z/, it was like a rounded, euro-sign € turned to the left :)
In lesson 3, if "o" is pronounced as you instructed then why does the second "o" in the word cloud sound like an "ah"????
Hello Linda Alvarez-Thull,
In accordance with Russian pronunciation rules, [o] in the unstressed position should be pronounced as [a], and in stressed position as [o].

That ʌ doesn't sound anything like a open-mid back unrounded vowel.
