It costs Matt time and money to make it all the way there. No way he's not going to try even if there is bad attitude from the customer. Though I'm sure Mat has a point where you can't pay him enough to do something.
Still money aside, I feel Matt is a "better man" and would help anyone even if it was to give the man his classic work shirt off his back.

So the mustang owner might have been a bit rough on the video, but I'm absolutely confident he is exhausted, possibly hung over, and spent probably the last 15+ hours either bouncing around in that rig or trying to fix it. Plus. Although he was negative, it was for good intentions. He didn't want the rig to fall off or become another problem halfway off the trail. I know Danny, he's a great guy. These Utah gamblers are an amazing group and helped me when I was in need when I went on one of their events a year or so ago.

Coilovers were removed to prevent damage to them, as someone indicated the replacement cost per coilover is approximately equal to the value of the entire car unmodified. Prior to Matt's arrival the intention was to place the rear of the Mustang onto the Van Flatbed and tow it out that way. In the shuffle of preparing for the mustang to be towed out the coil overs were placed in another vehicle to be returned to camp. That vehicle left a couple minutes before Matt arrived.
Danny (the customer) does have a strange demeanor but a heart of gold. The video doesn't show all the joking around and humor. That mustang build was the culmination of years of work and trial and error, damaging it by being incautious would be heartbreaking.
The bingo card was part of the event, helping a broken down gambler was one of the spots on the card that's why I insisted it be given to Matt.

Matt, Take a look at the US Army Buffalo MRAP fenders. For the heavy wrecker, something like the ones on the Buffalo might be a good solution. You could engineer a way to make them quickly removable so you could only use them when muddy conditions (and/or snowy slush) require them but store them away if you don't need them.

Hey Matt, You could use a makeshift platform that attaches to the center hookup of the wrecker and allows the lines coming off the boom to connect to it for lift. This will give you the ability to get the platform under the vehicle and lift it without damaging the vehicle, it will also allow the platform to pivot on the various angles that a trail can subject the towed vehicle to.
That or a full off road trailer that you can load a vehicle onto and secure that has wheels all the way at the back so as to prevent any scraping with maybe 40 inch wheels on the trailer.

Yes the Gambler 500 really has growing over the years it started right here in Portland Oregon. I am one of the originals members. Got a challenge for you Matt. Build a gambler 500 car by the original rules. Can not put more than $500 into a gambler rig and it has to make 500 miles. That was original rules. I was able to do it. 85 Caprice station wagon didn't have one straight panel on it. Got it for free homemade lift in it it made 496 miles I decided to climb over a rocky area and punched a hole through my oil pan but I had a blast we're going to be building a new one 1980 LTD Crown Vic 4 door got the car for 150 the lift dirt cheap homemade that is the spirit of the Gambler 500. And it helps clean the the trails which is totally awesome

I figure if my build got me stuck in that Mustang, I'd have been humble and thankful, however, his grumbling did save his rear bumper and mwybe he thought, "Yeah, my sh** broke, pls don't break it more." and we've all seen the "more damage" happen in recovery. Still, I love it when Matt and crew shows up and people are actually happy to see them roll in.
Matt, if you build a rig for that run you should put a big honkin', truck mounted leaf vacuum on it, like the one's used by city leaf collection. It'll pick up trail litter easily.

It’s essentially a 1 inch tube that comes off the steering knuckle with a big plastic fender that sits over the tires. You can bolt and unbolt them from the steering knuckle as you need it and it would keep mud from slinging everywhere.

Given the size of the tires and the glaring lack of fenders, it is obviously not street legal. If they let the wrecker pass, police would have a hard time stopping ANY vehicle, no matter how far they deviate from legal requirements. I have had windshields both pitted and cracked by debris flying off of tires. With an aggressive tread and large knobs, those tire could spit out golf ball+ sized rocks. Fenders are a legitimate need. Matt could make removable fenders with hinged joints such that once he loosens some wingnuts, each fender can fold into a thin stack of flat sheetmetal .

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's also not really anything you'd want to drive on the street for any real length. The banana and moorvair run out of gas all the time, and this thing is going to be way worse. They'll always be better off putting it on a trailer and dragging it as close to the job as possible.

Great job! Matt, could really use you, Paul, Rory, Robbie, and Holly to do a joint video series on trail etiquette. Stay the trail, right of way, and things of that nature.

You should definitely participate in the gambler 500. And I like that you use the word "ridonkulous"

Yes, Gambler build! We see your very capable rigs off road. Seeing a $500 crapcan off road would offer a lot of entertainment!

Matt I had an interesting idea when it comes to the gambler 500.
What about having you, Paul from @FabRats, Robby from @RobbyLayton and Rudy all make vehicles for the Gambler 500? That would be interesting seeing the different ideas you guys would come up with. Plus you guys would have fun
