Sand Chute Shenanigans

- While we were on other side of the state for the 24 Hell and Back we decided to take on Matt's challenge of the Sand Chute. We invited @FabRats to come along with us. We went down to he bottom and then had a game to see who went first. Paul won and got first shot. His truck did awesome and went right up on the first run. We went and right away was having some shifter issues. Most speed shifting an old 4 speed isn't great. Once we got that handled we kept trying. First we dropped air pressure. That got us quite a bit higher. Then we tried backing up it, that didn't work. So we decided to try a trick with my aluminum ramps... Which was interesting but unsuccessful. So out came our @pullpal land anchor. It did great and pulled us right up to the midway. In doing that the MORR crew showed up with the Broncbuster guys and they brought all the chaos. Once Jeff and Rhett made it up the Broncbuster rig was struggling due to a broken front axle. So out came the land anchor again and was used to winch him up to the midway point. Once there we tried multiple ways to get him up. We finally got halfway up when Paul's truck lost the water pump gasket. So while he let it cool down we winched Trailmater and the bronco up. Then once Paul's rig was cool enough we did one last pull with all the rigs pulling and got us all up. Paul decided to have us carry him out to avoid hurting his engine. So we got them back to the trailer and fun was had by some. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Remember, Kids!
The sand chute is not a toy.
And one more thing.
Great job on the recovery, the self recovery, and the other recovery!
Your advice falls on deaf ears, I'll be taking my sand buggie down it. If I fail to get out, , , then I'll make a call.
@@samcobuggies984or you buy paddle wheel tires and don’t have a problem, and have a winch with a sand anchor.
@@samcobuggies984deaf but I digress
@@messianichebrewshawnkawcak1550 I have paddles, but is it cheating to have them with me? Just in case 😉
@@samcobuggies984 whatever works. It’s life in the sand like a sand dragster. It’s a traction and power game. The paddles are necessary for sand crawling.
Good times were had. Thanks for the tow! Hopefully I can re-pay the favor one day.😎
Rory will need a hand on something one day - it always comes around in one form or another. Great to see everyone working together. Greetings to you all from New Zealand.
Loved how Rory emphasized that for anyone stuck in the sand chute to call MORR. He doesn't want that headache lol
With the fraction boards strapped to the rear wheels of Trail Mater, she behaved just like a sea turtle on the beach, getting ready to lay her eggs. Truly precious. Fun videos from both you and the Fab Rats. Thanks!
Isn't nature beautiful? 😂
Two board on the front and he would have been golden
Makes sense - Trail Mater does occasionally lay eggs.
Omg so accurate 😂😂😂
"Oh yea I'm not worried" as he roots around inside his transmission with a pry bar.. lol but lo and behold he prevailed as always.
If you plan on going to the Sand Chute, go early in the morning because it's going to be a long day.
Or bring a tent and supplies.
😂 when Rory lost his shoe, I lost it 😂
Me too!
@@grannyt6819 Likewise!! Was so funny seeing Him digging Shoe out.
In my 40+ years of stumbling my way through life, I've learned that poor decisions usually lead to the best stories and unforgettable memories 🤣🤷♂️
5 thumbs up 24 seconds after posting…pretty impressive. Always fun to see Rory and Paul together.
Paul and Matt both need a sand anchor!
I think this taught Paul that lesson.
Yup , Now we understand what that Holey Plate is on Back of Trail Mater .... ;)
Matt would leave it at the shop with his other gear he never takes. He wants light weight. How many times have we seen him towing a vehicle when all it needed was a tyre, a jump, a gallon of fuel.
@@graememckay9972 matt knows what supplies to prioritize. #1, 2, and 3 is junk food
It's always fun when a bunch of bad ideas come together... LOVE IT !!!
If it wasn't for " bad ideas " or " bad decisions " life would be boring 🤣
@@thomasfletcher760 How True!! Makes life more interesting as well.
I give Rory a thumbs up even before I watch the video 👍👍👍
Rory is one of about 4 TH-camrs I do that with automatically. (Matt, Paul, and Casey LaDelle are the other three.) It's my little contribution to help in their success.
Paul's wrecker just seems to be perfectly geared for that first section.
It never faltered and sounded like a real beast! Hope the head / water pump leak can be fixed easily.
5.38 gear
Having an automatic and thus the ability to shift is a HUGE advantage in deep sand and deep dense snow.
I think Paul’s wrecker is a refinement of trail mater mostly because of the hydraulic boom capabilities if and when he has it all nailed down he might give Rory a run for his money. But trailmater has been solid for years and Rory’s experience is unparalleled, overall both great rigs both great guys .
400 hp, makes a big difference.
"Sand anchor beats sand trap" is the quote of the day.
The entertainment value on the Sand Chute is tremendous.
I watched Paul's video of this adventure a few days ago, and it's fascinatingly to see it from Rory's point of view. I love Mike's sense of humour. He is so dry, and very funny.
Just like the wrecker games. Rory got the job done without tearing anything up despite not having the home advantage or the best tool for the job, and he helped out others along the way. If I get stuck or broke down in the Backcountry of south central Utah, I know who I'd call first.
As they said at the end of the video and I paraphrase ' If you're stuck in the sand chute call MORR' Too funny.
WOW, this field testing event and collaboration with FR was awesome! Even better that both channels published their views of the results! Bravo to all involved!
I love Rory's sense of humor. 😊
Sand Anchor is impressive.
Finally something good to watch! Couldn't find anything a few minutes ago.. 😂
same
Good video, Your truck is more built for rock and trail and hauling crap out rather than floating on sand. I wonder how the scrambler would of done.
I think we have all been waiting for this video since Matt got in over his head
Good thing Matt's crew turned up 😂😂
This really does highlight the difference between rig builds.. some are for rocks, some are for sand, others mud...
The Sand Chute is a lot like the Bermuda Triangle.
Not all that go in will come out. If something can go wrong, it will.
I watched Paul's video earlier, but they left out a lot of what TrailMater did. This video filled in a lot of gaps! It seems to me that the first one to go up the hill may make it, but the vehicles that go next will be in trouble. At least all the bad decisions made for great videos, and hopefully, everyone had some fun!.
Paul's truck weighs 2,000 lb less than Rory's. Rory did a lot better after airing down his tires, but still needed to break out the sand anchor to get up the first section. Jefe and Rhett blazed out of there without assistance, and helped pull out the 2 broken vehicles.
Sand anchor for the win. What a fun day.
Oh goody , the other view of the Rory and Mike with Paul and Sean shenanigans ! I still think Paul should have had a truck hooked to the back of his truck " tow truck towing a tow truck towing a truck 🤣
Torque versus horsepower, learned this from you Rory, this time horsepower might’ve ruled the day, but it really boils down to tool specific applications
Gearing..... makes a huge difference in sand
And tire pressure
Horsepower with a torque converter...
Paul has more torque and hp than rory. They both have bbc 454. But paul has a th400 and 5.38 gear. Rory has sm465 and 4.10 gear. That is what makes the big difference
@@Nicco.L Rory installed a tired 454 from junk. No horsepower.
You can't B.S. sand.
So every video on Matt's channel from now on will be a sand chute recovery. Good work men. Love you......
Rory can't wait til you share 24 hour hell and back!!! You'll ALWAYS be my favorite driver.🔥💥⭐
He already has , last week or so ago
@@thomasfletcher760 really, I'm no longer trail mater's#1 fan?🤔 I missed an episode and an entire experience? I know they were in New Mexico at WE Rock a couple of weeks ago...
@@thomasfletcher760no he hasn't. You're confusing the WeRock event in Farmington with the 24 Hours to Hell & Back. He may have already tun it (I'm not sure), but he hasn't posted a video of it. If I'm wrong, post a link to the video. 😉
I'm definitely ordering a sand anchor.
Mike is doing a great job with video and commentary...that looked like a fun day with Fan Rats and Matt's crew...
trail mater is a rock crawling star ⭐
Congrats for passing 200K subs. Why you don't have close to a million subs is beyond me. Always great content and good editing.
Mad props to the Editor (I think his name is Justin)
The good natured ribbing had me laughing out loud.
This was by far one of my most favorite episodes and its crazy how the camera doesnt do justive for how steep that hill must be! You guys most certainly did a phenomenal job 👏
I think trail mater did excellent because even if it went down alone it would have got out alone which it did because of rorys well planned rig.
Power and wheel speed is everything..Just like on a dirt Bike..
always a great time with TM and FR!
Manual transmission, almost always so much better. (Maybe not in that sand)
Paul and Rory seen this challenge and attempted it going full bore and they know that their recovery trucks are not made for these serious sand recovery's and Matt's vehicles are better suited for them. The important thing they learned was have fun in a serious situation and get the Sand Devil out! Oh and AIR DOWN YOUR TIRES!
I thought y’all done good for trailmater not being build for sand loved the video
It takes all 3 rescue companies to save a Bronco on the sand trap. You didn't make a call, because they were already there. But with your sand anchor, you might have made it anyway.
You cant know how much it warms my cold black heart to see all y'all coming together like ya do!
Y'alls just like one big happy family! ( Or, maybe even better? )
Thank you all so much for sharing your wonderful lives with us!
This is very entertaining, you guys should get together more. You are the off road Top Gear
Except these guys don't gleefully ditch their broken down friends. Although Rory and Paul did make it a point to always call MORR for recoveries in the sand chute. Not them!
That sand chute is a beast of an obstacle. Seems to require a very narrow combination of weight, power, gearing, tire tread, tire size "footprint"... Between you and MORR I've only seen a couple of vehicles power up it like it was nothing. Everything else struggles.
No matter what adventure Rory is on it’s always watching absolute 1st class top quality viewing and it’s really clear if towmater struggles it definitively not for amateurs and it’s always great to see Rory Paul and Matt out together 👍
Doing dumb stuff is great, 2 X Dumb = is AWESOME! Love watching TrailMater and FabRats.
You can't beat the sound of a big block at full throttle.
It IS a healthy sound, isn't it? (happy sigh)
Oh yeah! Always makes my heart skip a beat. So good.
A big bock with low horsepower. Sand doesn't fool around.

Great video! And yes, manual transmission any time! Sand sucks anyway.
The amount of respect I have for you having your wrecker a manual transmission is astronomical. I am a diehard standard transmission guy and I know the skill it takes to speed shift under stress like that.
FabRats killed it. Great job, Paul. Victory pie for you. Really missed Matt there to tease and assist. His guys did a good job. Rory fixing his wrecker on the fly never disappoints.
Really cool to see the other side of the bad decisions. Always fun to watch when you & Paul get together. You never know whats going to happen. Thanks for sharing
LAMO, "poor decision it's what we do" -Trail Mater
now thats a shirtni might buy
Rory gave a great effort; He is very skillful. Paul just kicked butt on this trail.
“It’s a very obvious poor decision … but it’s what we do!!” 😂🤣😂 Awe man I sure do enjoy these SHENANIGANS!! 👞 Uh, Rory… you’re missing a shoe. 15:46 😂
That's part of why I love my SM465. Just fix it with a pry bar. lol
Ya. Best trick ever. I was totally impressed by that scene.
Paul may have won the sand chute, but at the end of the day we all saw who was left standing and doing the work. Awesome video!
Wisconsin dude here. The first time I went off-roading in Moab was 1996 (19yo at the time, in July, driving an 89 Dodge Raider with no AC). The scene and times have changed. The Pull-Pal was certainly a real product advertised and used in the 4wd magazines of the time. Rory is probably the best rock driver I have ever seen. I am amazed by the skill and knowledge that he has. This channel shows that "old tech" 4wd works really well and knowing of when to winch. I want the trails to stay open, but if no one remembers "Tread Lightly"(and lots $$$ wreaking the trails) that won't happen. Pick up your trash and anything resembling trash as you go. Don't make a new line without thinking about it, and how others may follow it. (sometimes it can't be helped... I get it).
These are the amazing spaces, that we can enjoy forever if we are responsible...
I don’t know why but watching this made me think of a song from the musical Annie Get Your Gun I saw on tv when I was a teenager many, many moons ago!
”Anything you can do, I can do better.
I can do anything better than you.
No you can't.
Yes, I can.
No, you can't.
Yes, I can.
No, you can't.
Yes, I can; Yes, I can; Yes, I Can!”
Including getting stuck trying to get out of the sandchute! This was a hoot, glad it didn’t take as long as Matt to get out! 😂👍💕
My thoughts before you said it automatic would have been better to go up the chute. Rest of the time standard is the way I would have things.
Brilliant entertainment. Always wanted to see if traction boards could work strapped on :-)
I absolutely love poor decision day. Makes for great entertainment for us.
29:26 I feel your pain, Rory. That rabbitbrush causing allergies this time of year is the worst--and you caught a bunch of it in the same shot as your sneeze!
Pauls may have made it up in one go but thank goodness for the content from trailmater! lol, love watching this channel
9:12 - look at how steep that was! 😂
Best part of a bunch of recovery guys going out together, if you break you dont have to call for help.
'What a herd of Turtles' - i spat my drink.. lol
Now Matt is gonna have to send someone to rake the sand hill😊
Mike has the best attitude. I watch because of him. Rock on, guys!
That sand looks like cinnamon. The way the board were digging in was impressive. This should be called the cinnamon challenge. lol
This has been one of the most hilarious climbs and escapes I have watched. Great job and great entertainment. Thanks
Mad respect for the reverse attempt👍🏻
Sometimes there is no substitute to a winch!! Great fun watching great people doing dumb but enjoyable things!
No substitute for horsepower, airing down in sand, lockers, and beadlock rims.
I like the “hole digger” attachment you tried, that would be good for tilling soft fields! Auto trans for the WIN, they over heat when they are pulling stuck manual shift vehicles out!
That sand anchor is cool. I could have used one of those more than once in my life.
A take apart version of a plow anchor developed near 50 years ago for anchoring large vessels in a sand bottom. The harder the pull the deeper it digs into the sand. I spent 60 years of my near 70 on in under the oceans of the world. Developed by the British.
Nice to see it works.
But there's been nothing built yet that doesn't have the potential to break. Just imagine the force of the projectile if that thing pulled out or broke off.
@@imagseer When you are winching slow against a sand anchor there's next to no energy in the line so even if it broke, nothing dramatic would happen.
That was some fine camera work there Mike 👌 yall never disappoint...
good job Rory at least u didn't tear up anything
What I've learned from all these sand chute runs between Matt's videos and this one, is that although you don't need crazy hp to go rock crawling, it sure is helpful when climbing a sand chute lol
Runnin in the sand is all about wheel speed a good set of tires and a bit of HP, if you don't got it you ain't gettin up it.
It’s hilarious to see more than one side of the story on these.
Hi Trail mater do you know I really love your show and I am very happy you are helping people when they need help when they need help I will always praying 🙏 for you and your family and friends and your little girl ok you please please be careful ok you have a wonderful day and have a good night and day ok love Lorilee xoxoxoxox
Put some paddle tires on it would not be a problem. I'm sure Casey's track Jeep would easily do it,but he would have a weight distribution advantage. So come on Casey bring it on.
Rudy has tracks for his Jeep too. Hoping to see the two of them get into tracked Jeep shenanigans together sometime.
Can't wait to see Merlin try, he would put on a great show
Momentum along with tire pressure are your best friends in the sand!
Looks like paul will make him a land anchor soon as he gets a chance. Also that sand trap aint no joke
Between the Rory and Trailmater that machine is unstoppable!
Were you even watching the video?, the sand chute stopped him dead, which proves no weakness on his part, just a very hard climb.
Trail Mater was made for low and slow on Moabs rocks. Rory did fantastic considering the location. Great video from both sides. I'd love to go wheeling with all of them.
Awesome that looks like some good times. Lucky for Paul Trail Mater was there. Great job playing around. And the ole sand anchor saved the day. Just goes to show once again how awesome Trail Mater’s set up is.
Oh the fun. And horsepower ratings for cargo straps 😂😂😂😂😂. Keep it up you guys. 🎉🎉🎉
This was a fun one! 😁🤘
This is great! Love every minute of it... Also, finally seeing someone using a PullPal in the sand - YES!
Rory you're so loved, one sneeze, you guys will be swamped with allergy meds😁
You kids are having way tooooo much FUN! I wish I was there!
Boys having way too much fun!!!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Thanks for the Shenanigans!🙃
Teamwork prevailed. Thanks for no crappy music.
first time I have seen an anchor used that much and it works exactly as needed , i like it
Great video and collab! Even though the camera doesn't pick up how steep things are, I think Mike does about the best job of being able to pick that up as best as possible.
*_MORR For The Win !_** Jefe and Rhett in the Bronco and Banana ruled that day.*
*Great Fun all around ------*
Yeah and if Matt’s wrecker would had working lockers the first attempt it would have crawled right up
Did we watch the same video? Jefe was the last person trying to help. Sure, he made it up fast, but when it comes to pulling a load it is a turd.
Something I didn't think about when watching Paul's video.
This really shows the difference between building a wrecker for sand and one for rocks.
At least you came prepared with the sand anchor and a ton of rope.
3 highly capable and skilled off-road recovery channels have shown us that the chutes are no joke. I love the video and that Rory used the opportunity to show us what works and what doesn't. What about a video where Rory, Matt, and Paul go to a place that all 3 haven't been and do something similar
