    I always thought I knew how to file a Cain until I watched one of your videos a few years ago,

    Thanks for sharing Billy

    Got to tell. A friend of mine shared this with me about 6 months ago. I watched from time to time but 2 weeks ago I got Covid and was not to do much. I watched about 30 videos while I was laid up. Now I am hooked and been a part of the epic journey across Canada.
    It’s been nice to watch a positive, enthusiastic and knowledgeable couple of guys (Buckin, Morgan on Wild West and the Tinman)! Really helped.

    Thank you, Buckin. Joined my 1st arborist company recently. No one had been keen to sharpen the saws, so I had a go. After some initial steep improvements, I began to struggle to keep them sharp for very long. Especially the bigger ones. So I watched your vids in the hope of some pro tricks. And lo and behold they have started to turn things around!
    Standard techniques might be fine for small saws, but brutes like the Stihl MS881 need your more advanced techniques if real life cutting performance is to be maintained. And you're right- it makes it so much more enjoyable!

    Thanks for asking me Buckin', I learned to hand file using a file guide, I found it helped me just like training wheels did on my first 2 wheeled bicycle. It didn't take.long before I didn't need it anymore but for me it served a purpose so thanks for asking. Remember, this too shall pass, one day at a time...

    Buckin I love the help with the file size , I ramped up my file size on my 193t and gave her some gullet…. Spitting chips even in petrified oak I think you have great advice when it comes to sharpening and file size you really have a talent. I would love to see your preferred file size vs chain size on the website, I think that would be so helpful to refer to for us who don’t have it programmed in our brains.

    Growing up in the 70's my dad cut timber for a living. He was like you very good at it. I never could do it very good though. When I used my Sthil 026 quite a bit I could half way sharpen it. Now I'm lucky to use it once a year so I changed to an electric Sthil. Now the only way I can sharpen the saw is with the Granberg G1012 my wife bought me a few years ago.

  • @splitpin1764
    @splitpin1764 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have trouble getting consistent hand filing results when i have no vice to use. I use a genuine Stihl .404 file holder with 7/16 file for 3/8 chain for filing in the field. It keeps the file at the right depth and the marks help with the angle. Stihl chain has a lower top plate which is why they recommend 13/64. My .325 holder always cut too shallow with the 3/16 file so i put 2 layers of 150 grit sand paper between the file and the file holder to make it cut deeper. If a touch up in is all thats needed these work well. If a chain hits rock or steel then back to the vise and get the gullet Buckin style. The 2 in 1 style holders cut at different depths on each side of the chain

    13/64 is good for filing some extra angle on the side plate like square, you can get in underneath I keep the top plate to the witness mark about 30 but you can run the file maybe 15⁰ more into the side plate requires stroking up through, not as a good as square but closer.
    Give it a try.
