Hi Shonna, again great episode. I don‘t intend to teach you, but this is a tricky one: you translated the German title ‚Schach dem Mörder‘ as „Chess the murder“, which is too literal, sounding like chess is the murder(er). It’s more like someone playing with the murderer beat him with check mate, just like the guy with the hairdo. Now, not being a native English speaker, I don‘t know how to come up with a catchy english title that means just that, it’s subtle word play. Suggestions are welcome … Greetings, Bernd

You are so right to question the drug issue. This inconsistency really bugs me. No hospital then or now would administer drugs "brought from home". When my father was in a long-term nursing care facility, even vitamins had to be prescribed by the Dr. and brought in through the facility's supply channel. I love how you point out all the overlooked details like: changing shoes and doorknobs and neatly rearranged bathroom counters. These details you point out are fun. Thanks for a great review. I believe there is one other time when a victim dies in Columbo's presence. It is in one of the latest episodes: A Bird in the Hand. A car explodes right in front of Columbo, killing the occupant.

It almost happened in the very first movie, Prescription: Murder. Columbo and killer Dr. Fleming were just outside the hospital room when Mrs. Fleming died. I can’t recall any others. I'm really glad you pointed out the issue with this episode's gotcha. While Columbo finds a bunch of very suspicious circumstantial evidence (maybe enough to convince a jury), he still doesn't show any concrete proof that Clayton pushed Dudek or that he switched the medication. So for me, this ending was an anti-climax, as it really didn't feel like the conclusive "nailing down" of the perpetrator we see in other episodes. I kept thinking "he can still deny it, you haven't gotten him with anything".

18:06 - A little correction: the current world champion is Ding Liren, a Chinese, who defeated the Russian Ian Nepomniatchi in their match this year. I need someone as best as possible...look at Dudeks victory...IS it mate in 4? Or something similar?
I also wonder if interest in chess WAS so high as to have so much chess coverage. But in Columbos world, concerts are broadcast in primetime and then rerun.

    • @joaocarlosdarosafagundes7482
      @joaocarlosdarosafagundes7482 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@supermanprime6758 No, it wasn't a forced mate. The best reply to Rxa8 seems to be Qe8, unhappily exchanging a queen and a pawn for a rook, but the game would be entirely lost, unless the player with the white pieces were too much worse than the person with the black ones, and were in time trouble - neither of those conditions is observed here. But I honestly don't think the average player would, without pressure on the clock, oversee the theme of the queen at the same diagonal of the king, claiming for being pinned by that voracious bishop. Therefore, black interposing the check with its bishop is a very superficial move, because if you interpose with the queen you at least take a rook. Once Bxd5 is played, or you accept you're losing a queen for free - the best option -, or you try to take the bishop and then receive the check mate.
Thus, the suggestions of the fictional ex-world champion aren't the best, but he was really winning, anyway. And he plausibly tried to be practical, avoiding moves that, even if better than those played, would conduct more directly to an obviously hopeless position.

'Columbo' today is surely is seen as corny and silly by our younger generations, but back in its day, with only 3 channels & no way to record it, it was top of the line entertainment. We all had to wait, and if you missed it, you had to wait for 6-7 months down the road and hope it was rerun. It was entertainment, not high tech science or deep dark mystery. I’m upset that this episode didn’t appear in my TH-cam feed when it came out. I looked for it when your Double Shock episode appeared. Outstanding work once again. I worked for 17 years in the building next door to the Sheraton Universal. It was built for Getty Oil several years after this episode aired, but became the Texaco building when Texaco bought Getty. It’s now the Comcast NBC Universal building, the tallest in the San Fernando Valley at 35 stories. It’s only 2 blocks from Ventura Boulevard, which makes several Columbo appearances. The shot out the window on the morning of the scheduled chess match is identical to the view I had in the late 1990s, overlooking the Hollywood Freeway (US 101), so that always gives me deja vu (but not like poor Jim Farris had in Murder by the Book).

I'm so glad that you pointed out the wild fabric used for the curtains and wall coverings.
It is a spectacular Indienne style print. And really impressive. Amongst other things, it would be VERY expensive. The size and complexity of the pattern alone makes printing and using such a fabric super costly.
So I assume is not just set dressing for this episode. It would be crazy to spend such a huge amount of money for something so incidental.
I notice that a lot of the set dressing items, and even the sets, get used over and over in Columba. Which indicates there was a sensible eye kept on expenditure of that sort. Better that people should be paid more!
Indienne fabrics and patterns would have been not at all usual in the time this was filmed.
Mostly you'd only have seen similarish patterns of the cheap thin cotton bedspreads that hippies liked so much in the late 60s and early 70s...which were part of the same tradition.
Indienne patterns became fashionable for wealthy people in the 16th through 18th centuries, copying materials that were arriving in Europe as lands from Persia and further east were opening for trade, and well, exploitation and brutal "colonizing" (ie taking over other countries).
Such patterns are also called Persian or persienne.
You can see these prints in English country houses. And in they were used on the grand ocean liners before Deco became popular. Old and grand hotels continued to use them until the 90s, but even they started to want to look modern recently. Except The Dorchester, on Park Lane - it had been keeping it's high Victorian/Edwardian look. I hope it still does.
IN the past 50 or 60 years, when a fabric maker produced these, they would search for prints from libraries and museums which have tried to preserve and catalogue these extravagant and historical designs, even though the artists names have lost been lost.

@@WatchitforDays You are kind! I worked with fabric makers for a long time, and studied a lot of design history.
ONe of the things I adore about the original Columbo series is the wild early through mid 70s clothing and decor.
I notice that you have an eye for these things...you always pick up on the really fun and interesting costume and set dressing.
      -------------
I am really sorry people are snarky with you about pronunciations. We speak English! A language that defies all pronunciation structures. I'm comfortable in French and Spanish too...and I can tell you, those languages are so so simple to sound out. English is a total nightmare.
I always say that people who know words but don't know the pronunciation are people who are very well read. Because they learn their words from books and newspapers etc, from educating themselves, from having intellectual curiosity and becoming cultured through their own efforts.
The people who rudely correct you need to read a book about MANNERS.

Working out which horror films were out in 1973 when Clayton said he might watch a film, and the analysis of the medications (Digitalis plays the part of poison in the 90's Columbo episode "Uneasy Lies the Crown" - fun fact), is pure genius and takes these videos to a new level. They are so good and it's frightening the amount of work you must put into them. For me they are some of the most watchable videos on TH-cam. Thank you so much and ignore anyone who criticizes you. Much like the grammar police they can be quite annoying as if THEY never make a mistake in their lives. Unheard Chess Murder, Chess Murder Most Deaf, Chess Murder Most Silent, The Final Deaf Checkmate, Unheard Checkmate of Death, Deadly Silence of a Checkmate, and The Most Dangerous Checkmate. I put about 20 minutes into this before my brain started to turn to mush. Thanks for the deep dive!! I really enjoy them!

I like the Italian title myself " The Last Checkmate." I agree with you that the gotcha was kind of weak & they could have orchestrated a different score for this episode. Knew Mr. Harvey died of stomach cancer short while after filming, but didn't know he had the disease while filming this episode. Thank you for your time & effort in doing another great Columbo deep dive review. Looking forward to the next one. Don't stress out too much about the naysayers. Tune them out of your life.

I am consistently rewarded for viewing your on-the-spot critical analysis of these great "Columbo" episodes. When these were on originally as part of the NBC Mystery series, I can't recall ever missing one episode. They were . . . THAT . . . popular. Peter Falk was splendid in this role. The guest star "killers" were always top notch, too.

Thanks for the video! this is an interesting episode for me since I like playing Chess. Colombo is extra pestering, nagging and irritating to the murderer on this episode but in a delightful way. I remember Laurence Harvey from the Night Gallery awesome episode "The Caterpillar".

"Fool's Mate" seems good. Aside from its appearance in the episode, the word "mate" has relationship connotations that also turn up in the plot.
