Is Mrs Peck the same actress which played the role of the boss of some big Irish company in The Conspirators episode. She was always knitting sth green (some kind of the company's emblem) and that gave Columbo a vital clue as to where the illegal guns are hidden. In Russian version of the episode that red-headed poet referred to her either as "the queen" or as "Her Majesty"

The medic and lawyer soap operas are pure comedy gold. With their "I'm green and you're old and so much more experienced so please tell me what to do" shtick going on. A perfect parody of the kind of tv drama that an old gal like Ms Peck would be glued to :)

As a matter of fact, I used to very greatly love watching: "Ben Casey"; "Dr. Kildare"; and, many, many, similar shows which used to be on TV.
The satirical recreation made for; &, used in this program, of this Detective Series, was slightly chuckleworthy in a generalistic way. It was broad tongue-in-cheekish humorous intent; so that a wider audience demographic could glean messages from it, even if, they'd no intimate familiarity w/: the actual cultural items of those days.

I confess to being one of the rabble who find Colombo on the cooking show the best scene of the entire series. Colombo's nervousness is priceless when he can't think of anything else to say then "ahh". The killer and the pursuing detective together on a TV show was a creative stroke of genius-imho.

You have no idea how much I have waited for the new episode.🎉
Believe it or not... I am having a bit of a difficult time right now, and watching (and rewatching) your Columbo videos and the actual episodes repeatedly is actually helping me take my mind off things. You could say I watch it for days. 😉
So thanks for the great work!
As for this episode of Columbo... I like it. I think the twist with having twins is really good and well executed. Having a memorable killer is so important for Columbo, and the twins definitely stay in my mind.
My main gripe with the episode is also the cooking show. But for different reasons. For one... In Germany it is tradition to eat aspergus with sauce Hollandaise. From April til June is Spargelzeit (aspergus time), I assume this may date back to a time when aspergus was expensive? I don't really know.
Now my gripes are... I don't think I have ever eaten green aspergus, around here white aspergus is the popular one. Not saying it's better, just saying it seems wrong to me.😅 And secondly... Sauce Hollandaise is so delicious, I could eat it with a spoon. But man, what Columbo did there looked way too thin in consistency! That creamy, buttery goodness needs to be a really thick sauce.
Had I watched that cooking show it would have been the last time I tuned in.😂
I don't really have anything more insightful to say about the episode.
I have watched Ed Wood several times btw, but never made the connection. Mr Landau is not recognizable in that!
As for the international episode titles the German one this time is near identical to the US one. Double shock is a pretty good title though, so I get why they didn't bother changing it.
Hope your move goes well and you get set up quickly. Looking forward to season 3 whenever you are ready.

I know it’s Hollywood and this doesn’t matter, but the mixer probably wouldn’t have been lethal. He didn’t drop it onto his uncle. He dropped it into the water right above the drain. The drain is where the electricity wants to go, because that’s its path to ground. It probably would’ve arced straight through the soapy water and left the Uncle unharmed. At worse, it might have used his foot or leg as part of the current path, but as long as it didn’t arc across the man’s heart (which was all the way at the other end of the tub) it probably wouldn’t have killed him.

I love the uncomfortable dynamic between the lieutenant and Mrs. Peck in this episode. She's distraught over the murder and -- perhaps predictably -- vents her anger (the second stage of grief) at Columbo. I could go on for days (Hah!) about this one. Dabney Coleman and his gum. The lovely and spry Julie Newmar. Not one Martin Landau, but two. Fantastic!
also ... when I was a kid, in the days of tube television, we had a portable set that would actually respond favorably to being slapped on the side ... until it didn't.
also, also ... I don't know about the "best" Hitchcock movie, but The Birds absolutely terrified me.

Excellent! I’m looking forward to season three. This might be the first episode you rated lower than me. I thought Martin Landau was superb. I agree with you that the cooking scene was more silly than funny, but I still found it endearing. And I think Landau was right to keep laughing during it, because a TV host would focus on entertaining the audience. Perhaps Norman would’ve been prissier, but he’s not a TV host. Speaking of which-I think Norman killed the uncle. It was vague which character Landau was playing in that scene (Norman hasn’t been formally introduced yet), but it seemed more like Norman to me. The only caveat is that the uncle thought it was Dexter, and he presumably didn’t get easily mixed up. After all, Paul Stewart was only old enough to be Julie Newmar’s father, not her grandfather. My father and older brother both had bigger age differences with their younger wives. Jeannette Nolan got a bit overbearing in this episode (although the health cookies scene was sweet), but she was a marvelous actress. She showed her range in 6 different Perry Mason episodes and the Season 7/NBC network finale of Columbo (The Conspirators), with the unspoken premise that her matriarchal character was in on the murder conspiracy or at least potentially culpable of felony murder. Tim O’Connor plays a murder victim in Columbo Season 6 (Old Fashioned Murder). Dabney Coleman played a Columbo murderer in the 1990s, possibly making him the only actor to play a cop and killer in *separate* Columbo episodes. (Richard Kiley, of course, played a murderous deputy police commissioner in 1974’s A Friend in Deed, and David Rasche was a homicidal police forensics expert in 1997’s A Trace of Murder, well before his more recent run on Succession.) More trivia: Robert Butler directed three two-part Batman episodes, including the series premiere, although he wasn’t teamed with Julie Newmar or other familiar actors who did both Columbo and Batman (such as Roddy McDowall, Anne Baxter, Jack Kruschen, and Vincent Price).

Once again Columbo destroys evidence at the crime scene thereby negating any chance of a conviction. (Dropping ashes on the floor, rubbing them in with his hand and then touching every single thing in the bathroom)
This goes along with my theory that Columbo while seemingly busting so many rich and powerful people is always a lowly detective with no clout. He’s never had any of his adversaries convicted.
Best show ever. Always a good day when you drop a new video.

I like being surprised to learn there are identical twins. So I wouldn't want the episode to have a title that would give it away, with words like "twin" or "brother" or "sibling".
For this episode (where you don't see the murder and cover-up at the start of the show), "Double Shock" is a great "gotcha" title on the audience on several levels....
    1. Someone who reads the title during the opening credits knows "Okay, there's going to be two surprises here, I'm going to keep my eyes open for that".
The opening scene shows Dexter rehearsing the murder with the electric mixer, causing a big electric spark (shock). A few minutes later we see Dexter commit the murder, causing another big electric spark and (literal) shock.
So the viewer is talking to the TV at the writers, "I see what you did there, literally a double [electric] shock, nice pun in that title," and then just settle in for the rest of the show, all questions raised by the title's words "double" and "shock" having been answered.
    2. Later the audience is Shocked...to learn that there's actually a body Double, in the form of an identical twin. "Aha, that was sneaky, you got me there." And now we're watching to see how Columbo is going to figure out which of the twins did it - we already know it's Baxter, but we know Columbo doesn't know yet.
    3. Then at the very end, the audience gets surprised again, when Columbo shows us that *both* twins were in on the murder.
So it's more like a Triple Shock. Or at least a Two-and-a-Half Shock.
And the gotcha is another one of those double-gotchas I like - a gotcha on the killer(s), and a simultaneous gotcha on the audience.
    Good job, writers. 👍

This was well done and enjoyable as always! I didn't know the cooking scene was that polarizing to the fans. I always enjoyed that scene (though it's far from my favorite) and I interpret the excessive laughing by Martin Landau as his character trying to stay entertaining to the cooking audience. I loved what you did with Lisa's red batphone 😂. I have seen Jeanette Nolan in quite a few shows, she was a fantastic actress who played everything from kindly grandmas to evil witches. Let me start by saying, I love your commentary and insights. I also really enjoy knowing about all the extra's in the background.
I am kind of a car nut, so I have some info for you on the cars.
(I went down this rabbit hole a few years ago.)
Columbo's car is in fact a Peugeot 403 Cabriolet (fancy word for convertible)
Built from about 1955-1966. His is a 59, which differs from the 55-58's with a different hood/ ornament of the front.
It is commonly known that Peter Falk chose the car himself, found on the studio's back lot sans engine.
The body on the original car was very beat up, as can be seen in the episodes, though the studio was able to find an engine and make it run. After the first season, it was determined that they needed additional cars to streamline production, and have a back-up as the original car often refused to start.
So, go back to the first episode of season 2, you make a comment about the weird black blotches of the passenger side of the car.
This is because Peugeot finally got involved.
The show had become legitimate international hit. Peugeot, apparently was none-too happy about their car, featured on a huge TV show, being seen as a junker.
So Peugeot took it upon themselves to find 2-3 more identical cars, and leased them to the production. (I would bet they were "leased" for near zero dollars).
    Here is the problem.
TOTAL production of 403 cabriolet, across the entire decade, was around 2000 cars. Most of these (about 500) were apparently built in 1959 (same year as Columbo's). But an unknown number were brought into the US and Canada. I have seen numbers as low as a dozen, total, for a 10 year period.
If you add to this the fact that theses cars were not known for their longevity, i.e. even the closed cars rusted away to nothing in a few years... I would bet 90% of the cars brought across the pond were scrap metal even by 1973.
SO, finding these cars was not easy, and the ones they found, were in pretty good shape because the owners had taken good care of them, or Peugeot restored them before sending them to the production.
This means the car at the beginning of season two was a really nice car, that the prop guys splashed some of the spray-on black paint they use to knock the shine off of cars.
They must have assumed it wouldn't be seen in the light.
(I would bet they were going to use the new "nice" car for the driving scenes, and the old beat up car for the close ups, but the old car wouldn't start.)
Throughout the rest of the series, if you keep eye out, you can tell which of the 3 cars is which in nearly every scene.
A couple more car related things:
The bent antenna in this episode may be intentional, but is what happens in automatic car washes when you forgot to put down your antenna.
"...sounds like a bank vault...", is a phrase used by Columbo in a previous episode, and is what car people use to describe the sound a door makes when it closes on a significant car.
Old cars were heavy, made of wood and steel. The doors were very heavy, and had to have good hinges and hardware, or they would sag, and not close correctly, making the sound of multiple "hits" of the mechanism. Whereas a well built/restored car has doors that are in alignment, and close with a sturdy, single "thump", like a bank vault. (a door that is perfectly aligned or it will not close)
Early on, many of the cool cars that the Murderer's drive were their own personal cars, or borrowed from one of the other actors. I think this solved two problems. They didn't have to go looking for cars, and it was a way to supplement the income of the actors buy renting their car from them.
Later they started getting cars from Luigi Chinetti. This is obvious because Chinetti is infamous in the car world, and in those days was the exclusive importer for Ferrari for the whole United States, based in LA. If there's a Ferrari in the episode, it probably came from him, as well as any of the other "import" cars used that weren't owned by the actors. (Notice that almost none of the ferrari's ever used in the series get driven, and if they do, it's on a set, or in front of a house for 3 seconds at 5 kph.) Thats because those cars were for sale. What better way to advertise to the Beverly Hills Clientele, than to show your cars in the most watched show on TV?
    Everybody wins.
I know that in an upcoming episode, William Shatner and Columbo can be seen in front of a Dusenberg, which is actually owned by Shatner, an avid car collector, and another exceedingly rare car.
I think you pointed out, the blue Mercedes 280SE convertible used in Murder by the Book is also used in Blueprint for Murder. I could be wrong, but I think that was Peter Falk's personal car. (I seem to remember the same car showing up in an episode in the 90's)
If you look close you will notice it is nearly identical to the car used in The Hangover.
    Keep up the great work.
P.S. The Jaguar cars that have FHC in their name, that means Fixed Head Coupe. You could get an FHC, or a Cabriolet. that is how they are differentiated...

I eagerly await all of your uploads, and your attention to every single detail is impeccable. You even investigated the electrical outlet! Most impressive. One thing that stands out to me as I rewatch this episode is what appears to be a heavily smoky atmosphere in the main lobby of the bank when Columbo meets with Mr. Parks, er Paris. Was the set burning down while they were filming this scene? Why isn't everyone scrambling to the exits?

I completely agree with you about the Mrs Peck character!! I didn’t mind the first outburst, but all the others are super annoying to me!!
And I have always thought that there was way too much laughing in the cooking scene!!
That scene also reminds me strangely of the old 1970’s cooking show called The Galloping Gourmet that my mom used to watch when I was a kid. Good luck with your move , I hope it goes as smoothly as possible; in the meantime I will be rewatching your other videos as well as the first episode of season three in preparation for whenever you return
Thank you for truly outstanding videos that are a pleasure for this Columbo fan to watch.
Also, I agree with you about Psycho, with Rope and Strangers on a Train coming in a close second for me !
Best of luck with everything, and thank you again ❤🙏🥰

Thank you so much for including clips from movies that the various actors starred previously/later. It's much more appealing than simply throwing in a movie poster. This must be a ton of additional work, so thank you very, very much!
13:22 why would anyone do this?? Did they need another golf course, of what??
14:15 this is one of the reasons I love watching Columbo, some of the interiors are just wild. So are the clothes!
14:33 my guess would be cocaine, but it's so... NOT 1970's! Maybe she's digging these old weight loosing pills with amphetamines :D
20:02 huh, nice piece of trivia; in my country there is a joke that people with flat feet wouldn't get into the military, but into the navy instead - because their feet would stick to the deck really well!
26:07 yet another reason I love Columbo: the cars! these beautiful, 70's cars!
26:13 why this shot was necessary? well, not "necessary" per se, but these were the 70's, just after the sexual revolution; we are now - ironically - living in a much more conservative society, strangely ashamed of human body despite the progress in many views about sexuality; I'm an 80s kid, I remember people very casually showing their beautiful bodies in movies and shows back in the 90s, so I guess in the 70s it was even more common. It's kinda strange how today it became a banned topic, like, some people just hate anyone showing their curves on screen. Very weird!

this is my favorite episode, there's so much to love. the way he says "damp" is pure gold. i loved the way the brothers interacted and talked about each other, its the funniest thing to me when Dexter called Normal a "bean bag" like what?! haha WOW. plus the apparent wordless flight to NV is crazy to me, i cant imagine going on a flight and not asking why i was going at any point!

Very enjoyable video! I generally don't watch this episode because of Mrs. Peck's constant squawking, but like it otherwise. I really liked Jeanette Nolan as Hyder Simoson's "old woman" in the Twilight Zone episode "The Hunt." In this, not so much.
