When I was in school, I had the pleasure of meeting the stepdaughter of composer David Grusin on a train. She was kind enough to introduce me to him in the weeks that followed as I was just starting to develop an interest in composition. Years later, I would have the honor of performing on a recording project of his where I was able to thank him again for the generosity he showed me as a student. Mr. Grusin’s work as a composer, pianist, and producer had a profound influence on my development as a musician and I will be eternally grateful.

OK, I’ll put in my 2 cents’ worth. I first saw William Windom in a short-lived TV series he starred in called My World and Welcome To It (1969-70). He played a day-dreaming cartoonist with a wife and daughter. His character was based on the real cartoonist, James Thurber, and the creators of the series, therefore, mixed Thurber’s line-art cartoons in with the live-action in every episode. In 1969, I was a troubled 12 year old boy, without a father, and I adored William Windom and wanted to be part of his TV family. (The same was true of My Three Sons, Father Knows Best, and Leave it To Beaver).
I’m a huge Columbo fan and because I live in Los Angeles, I recognize some of the outdoor locations they used. Prescription Murder was a great pilot for the series and thank you for the great review. There was one thing missing, though.
In a later scene in the movie, in Dr Fleming’s office, Columbo and the Dr are talking about smart murderers when Columbo asks
Lt. Columbo: Tell me, Doctor, how do you catch a man like that?
    Dr. Ray Flemming: You don't.
Lt. Columbo: You're probably right. He sounds just too clever for us. What I mean is, you know, cops, we're not the brightest guys in the world. Of course, we got one thing going for us: we're professionals. I mean, you take our
friend here, the murderer. He's very smart, but he's an amateur. I mean, he's got just one time to learn. Just one. And with us, well, with us, it's - it's a business. You see, we do this a hundred times a year. I'll tell ya, Doc. That's a lot of practice.
That for me summarizes the story lines of all coming episodes: Columbo loves outsmarting killers. Even though they may be more clever, wealthy, and better connected than he is, when someone commits murder, they are in Columbo’s pool now, and he’s the shark. In the end, the professional schools the amateur, sometimes in a beautiful, jaw-dropping finale.

I started watching more episodes although it was not until recently I could say I have seen every episode. My theory on why they outlined the wife's body is that the plan was to get that initial reaction from the husband. He should have panicked, called the police, or called out. The fact that he did not do that let Columbo know, pretty much from the start, that the doctor was the murderer.

Thanks for persevering through the death of a thousand cuts to produce this superb witty video.
There are many fine acting scenes by the main players in this film but I especially like when Falk is grilling Justice at the movie studio.
Columbo tougher and more antagonistic than we are used to, breaking Joan down, but she steels her nerves, and denies Columbo the win.
Justice is very effective as the vulnerable smitten patient, in over her head, reluctantly following a plan, with a man who is simply using her.
I seldom feel empathy for the victims in these dramas but Foch, as Carol, delivers a sympathetic character who want to believe the best of her husband.
And of course Falk and Barry have excellent scenes together with Dr. Flemming maybe telling Columbo how to use his innate under dog style to greater advantage against future criminals.

Your seldom feeling empathy for the victim point is so often true in Columbo. The victims are often worse in some ways than the murderers themselves. If it's not an I'll-expose-you-and-crush-you scenario, it's I'll-take-you-for-everything-you're-worth. In the Columbo universe, the last thing one should ever do, is agree to a meeting after having had such a confrontion.

As no doubt many others have noticed, that sit-down verbal fencing duel between Columbo and Fleming (where the doctor spills his drink having lost track of it), spells out the concept of the film and the even series of TV-movies. The murderers usually think they're smarter than anyone else, and that their various superiorities give them an inherent right to murder someone, but Columbo (and the police) have one big advantage: they're professionals, and the murderer is (usually) an amateur, who has one shot to get it right, just one, while Columbo does this a hundred times a year. To paraphrase a fine description of Batman I once read as a boy: going up against Columbo is like trying to fight a shark in a swimming pool.

One day last year, I was watching Gene Barry in an episode of his series “Burke’s Law,” in which he portrays a millionaire police detective solving murders in Los Angeles. Then suddenly, I had a revelation! What would be the exact opposite of Amos Burke? Lt. Columbo! Burke was an LAPD homicide detective and millionaire who was always sharply dressed and rode around in a very expensive foreign car (Rolls Royce).
Columbo, on the other hand, was an LAPD homicide detective who was not very wealthy, dressed in a wrinkled raincoat and and rode in a very inexpensive foreign car (Peugeot).
AND, of course, “Burke’s Law” didn’t reveal the murderer at the beginning of the program, as they do on “Columbo.”
I thought it was very fitting that Gene Barry should be the guest murderer on this first episode of “Columbo”, “Prescription, Murder.”

Very enjoyable. I watched Columbo mostly with my stepfather when I was around 10 years old. We watched it with German overdubs. Back then they did a pretty good job with translations and the voice fit Peter Falk. I will throw in 2 facts: "Stahl" is a German name than means "steel". "Koenig" means "king". Solid work.

It is so moronic that these companies put copyright claims (illegitimate by the way) on content like this because what you are doing is generating interest in old material that can only lead to a renewed and expanded audience. Great breakdown! I really like this tv movie. It's much more serious than later Columbo episodes and Columbo himself appears much more well groomed and plays harder against one hell of a smooth and slick villain. I'm not sure if the police procedure that leads to Dr. Fleming accepting his defeat is legal. He utters the words (non verbatim): "Something could have been arranged, an accident perhaps". He is so damn sure of himself. I love the "gotcha!" look on Peter Falk's face, when Dr. Fleming finally finds out that Columbo knows at least as much about people as himself. Columbo simply learned it from the "other side of the tracks" and through experience. Excellent tv movie!

This was a great episode. I watched this maybe 10 years ago and wasn't really into it. Recently went back and watched columbo again and thought I'd give this a try. Hands down one of my favorite episodes. The doctor was brilliant, and called columbo out on his BS, the act columbo portrays and give us foreshadowing to come on how columbo catches his victims, cause he comes off as slow lol. I really think he would have got away the murder had the new girl never showed up to his office while columbo was there in the beginning. All and all great video. Love you're videos ma'am. I really like this episode but I never really got why Joan confessed at the end. Apparently there was no real proof so if she confessed, she and Dr Fleming will go to prison because she is far from innocent here. She knew of the murder, participated in the planning and action, etc.. If she kept her mouth shut, she would have been able to continue being an actress. I mean, could be that the police would agree to a deal to get Dr. Fleming but it looks like she is just ready to confess. And I also don't believe she is a very moral character: she was okay with killing his wife as long as he loved her. So she should go to prison but that means her confession does not bring any advantages for her.

    • @WatchitforDays

Decker was driven to temporary insanity when he loses his entire crew in a battle with a massive robotic killing machine. I think the interesting thing about this first Columbo appearance is that, your whole perspective of the character Columbo would alter drastically depending on whether you've watched this episode before the others, mid way, or not at all. The reason being that Columbo's whole "clueless, friendly cop" act is blown by the Doctor here, and as you mentioned his "intensity", at the same time he proves to be somewhat vindictive and competitive (with regards to the killer)...a quality which, while still lurking beneath, is sort of downplayed in future episodes, especially in the 1990s.

Great analysis as usual. I didn't know this "made for TV movie" was new version of older plays. But I read long time ago that the "Columbo" character was inspired by "Porfiry Petrovich" the detective in Dostoyevski's novel "Crime and Punishment". And before Peter Falk, the producers were contemplating Bing Crosby to play Columbo.
