I've just bought the Q8 to record band gigs, and I wish I'd seen this video first! I'm going to keep the Q8, but I'm vey tempted to get the Q2n-4k as well as I quite fancy the best of both worlds.
Thanks very much for your detailed review. I've been looking for a small action or pocket camera and think that the Zoom Q2n-4k is the best for my needs: I like the very wide 15mm view; even though there is no stabilization, you can crop in or use stabilization in software in post; it has a headphone jack; I will use 1080p to save battery life; 4 rechargeable AA batteries and charger are about $15 USD; the flat profile mode allows many options for color grading the footage in post; the dials and buttons look real easy to use; since the field of view is so wide and small sensors like its 1/2.3" it has offer a wide depth of field that means that almost everything close should be in focus, can do without a flip selfie screen; I don't need weatherproofing for it; it saves space because it doesn't need an external mic for good quality; it will easily fit in a coat pocket; I don't care about graininess in low light; the wider base of the body looks like a stable design to set on a table or chair. thanks again.
I’ve got a Q8, it streams via USB at 720, which is pretty disappointing. There’s a new Q8 4K coming out apparently. Thanks for the review Deb, I’ve been watching your videos for a long time. They’re always very informative.
Unfortunately the streaming on any camera is very disappointing. Have you looked at the ELGATO streaming devices? amzn.to/3BhZ01H Allows you to stream anything with HDMI output. I use this one amzn.to/3sqrcuS I use a Panasonic LUMIX that runs into the ELGATO. The imaging is so much better than the Logitech Brio I have.
@@DebErney Plase Deb, could you make a video using the Q2n 4K as a webcam with the Elgato external card to the pc to see if the image is better. thanks a lot.
Hi Deb, pretty Good Demo, but I think the jazz club or dance club settings for video are designed to dim inside a building such as a “jazz club” lighting, or “Dance Club” with its lighting. Ideally, if you could’ve gone into a club like setting, it would’ve been much more helpful to see how the settings adjusted for clubs instead of comparison to your backyard trees, grass and bushes . But overall you showed a pretty Good demo of how it works outside or in your house. The Q2 I believe is designed to capture everybody on stage where some cams can only view half the stage or part of the ceiling. Such as 5 piece band w guitarist on left stage drummer and singer towards center and bass player and keyboard player far right. Would’ve been nice if you were able to demo that kind of scene? Maybe your next video? Part 2?
Great reviews. Think for the moolah im gonna pick up the Q2. Im not to concerned with picture quality. Justcwant decent sound. I think the Q8 had tiny bit better picture but sound was same on both. And i dont really need the mic inputs. Was kinda bummed on the live drag on both. Thanks 👍
Great video. Question, I have a Q2n Zoom 4k camera in Setup mode, I’m a little confused about this section In Play Mode which is better to put it on while recording live music “ Play one “ or “ Play all “ ? Does it matter ? appreciate your advice. Thank you.
It seems the Q8 has more dull colours and the Q8n has unrealistic colours. I want to decide between the two, is there much difference in low light settings video-wise? The Q8 seems to have more direct sound, is the Q8n better sound-wise? Thx!
The sound is fairly similar the video is a huge improvement. The Q8 had subpar video. If price is an issue look at the Q2n 4K. In my opinion a much better visual - sound balance. And incredibly easy to use. amzn.to/48eHZUX
Which is easier to use? I use my iPhone 11 now to record my bf’s band but the audio hasn’t been coming through well. I am not very tech savvy so I need something easy- Thanks for any advice!
Thanks, Deb! A question: Is the lag between audio and video on the Q2N that you point out here a pretty common/frequent occurrence? I need to start filming a bunch of video of my performances to make a promo reel for a press kit, but want it to be as polished as possible (while saving as much $$ as possible:>)). Would you recommend the Q2N for that, or would I be better off with something like the lumix. I'm no camera/video buff by any means, so ease of use is important too. Thanks!
You can’t beat this for ease of use. I also have my lumix G7, picture quality doesn’t compare but the sound on the Q2n doesn’t compare with sound on the lumix. I think the q2n would work for you.
@@DebErney Thanks again, Deb! That cinches it. I did some more research too and, the more I think about it, the more I think I'll go with the Zoom. It just seems like a good balance of what I think I'll need at this point. I also have the H4N Pro that I've used as a field recorder, maybe I could use that for extra sound source/back up while filming. Anyway, I've got too much tech to learn as it is and so the ease of use of an all-in-one that has decent enough quality to start out with seems like the best option.
What is the ideal editing program to use? I have an old Flip camera that has its on editing program . If I up grade my camera I will have to learn to edit the new video. All the videos on my page were shot with the Flip camera. Thanks
1. does Zoom Q8N screen goes off when you connect hdmi to its micro hdmi output into a capture card for live streaming? 2. does Zoom Q8N have a clean hdmi output when connected from the micro hdmi to a capture card for live streaming?
Your video test comparison of both camera is perfect on point! Allow me to point out for your viewers: The Q2n-4K and their entire camera line up is awesome functional idea, but…..! Buuuuuuuuut….!!! 🤗🙏☹️ Oh my dear!, Only, if Zoom, COULD, PUT a better chip in those camera, holy smokes, they would outsell go pro and dji camera combined! Someone would immediately jump here and say- “Wait, zoom is not an action camera, it’s intended for completely different purpose” Yes, it is, I more than get it…, But, seriously Zoom, can you fix that horrendous awful LAG-Beyond annoying LAG-between audio and video…, 😩😩😩 for the moment-no, You can’t! Even with firmware update! I tried it all In web cam mode-the “video” button-turns into “delay” adjustment option, and it DOES HELP-a little…..but, here is the caveat! Why on earth, have you made this future on your camera, to Have the option to adjust, when you know that there is already a lag issue, why haven’t you fixed it/designed it, when you were designing the camera, so ridiculous! The lag problem is not only noticeable in Live Web cam mode, it is worse, when you are recording voice/interview/any direct speaking into the camera! 100%, they know this in their design/build department, but they thought, ah…most people are gonna be using our cameras for music recording, they won’t notice! Ridiculous! I had the camera, and honestly-unfortunately had to return it, and have thought about buying it again, no way! Not until they fix that HUGE issue! My point of comparison with DJI osmo and GoPro is, go check out tier cameras, w amazing video quality and horrible sound, but……, there would be no lag! And for us musicians that’s huge, we know the value of timing ✌️😉😌 Put a new chip, fix the inside “guts” of the camera, and would be a miracle of a little thing! Thank you for the awesome post!
I haven’t experienced a lag except in WEBCAM MODE. Take in consideration all cameras will have the lag. That’s why they have the webcams like Logitech. I would pay a bit more For GoPro quality video along with the great audio.

you really have to play with all the modes as they each have strengths and weaknesses in certain conditions.
Thank you, really helpful video.
From either of these beauties, How do you up load content straight to social media?
Or as with GoPro, do these also require downloading an App?
They both use an sd card for easy transfer. You can also link them with the usb cable, but I prefer the sd card to transfer files.

Очень хороший и полезный обзор. Спасибо Вам большое за проделанную работу!!!
I found with my Q2n the picture comes out super washed out and not very crisp and often has orangey grey wash over the picture
Proper lighting and the scene settings make a huge difference in picture/video quality. Check page 19 of your manual and use different scene setting.
Flat color profile would give you the best result for grading since there is more dynamic range.
What a pitty that you do not compare Q2n-4K with Q8n-4K, but of course Q8n-4K is very new....
