    The video is good. I have been using Q8 intensively for 2 years. A practical, realistic understanding of the issues involved in basic camera selection - ok. But I would mention to those interested that they must not hope that the camera will record a clip on TH-cam. It is good to clarify what exactly I am doing and what I want to do in the foreseeable future. This device only has the shape of a camera and also has its basic function - although it records moving images and appears to be of superior quality, it is different - the Q8 is a high-quality audio recorder with the ability to record what was probably happening in front of the lens, but that that's all. the camera has no Zoom - only digital - its use immediately degrades the impression of superior quality to ordinary FHD. The camera is designed for small rehearsal rooms to capture all the musicians that make up the band from a tripod in the garage.
    I'm a singer-songwriter, and when I use greenscreen and want to record a song for TH-cam, I have to do something so that there's really only the green screen behind me - I have to have the camera awfully close. The camera has a fixed, incredibly wide angle of view. More or less, the only option is where to place the camera and then all the songs I record will look exactly the same - I lose the opportunity to experiment, change the angle of the shot, etc. Forget 3K. And above all, forget about automatics - do the work and try different optical modes first - only Concert Low Light seemed the most practical to me.
    Considering that I record the sound at home anyway via the sound card to the DAW, the purchase of this camera was probably unnecessary. I was fascinated by the possibility of recording a song in the forest, etc., but when I have the time to devote myself to it, I prefer to work on the safe side and record everything at home - then XLR inputs are indeed a beautiful potential, but an average mirrorless camera would give better results and it would be better with it worked. As the only, cheapest option, yes - for records for internal use. Mirrorless cameras have an input for a microphone, and a better one can only be acquired later in time.

    So....Very well done video, except for one crucial thing -- the matter of _BATTERY LIFE!_
    This is the second video I've seen on the Q8 that somehow failed to mention the battery life,
    which leads me to contend that the Zoom Q8, while ideal, may NOT be the best all-in-one option after all.

    The new Zoom Q8n4k will be the same price as the previous Q8 and offers all the same amazing audio features and adds 4k video! All the points we talk about in this video regarding value for audio still apply to both the Q8 and the new Zoom Q8n4k. Zoom will soon only be offering the Q8n4k as the new and flagship model.

    Great review. Very balanced and informative. Small point I disagree on-some dSLRs do have dedicated sound inputs but from my experience don't offer great quality, so to match it to the video quality, you should really go separate which means extra gear and expense!

    Great video! Thanks so much for the content. Do you recommend this solution for high school musicians looking to make recordings for important auditions, such as for all-state or college, or would a higher-end solution be more appropriate?

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Dave, thanks for the comment! We do feel this is a good solution for important auditions; in fact, a Pepper employee has recently used this camera successfully for her child's All-State auditions. The good thing about this setup is that for the piano you use the stereo XY mic but for vocals (or in that particular case, a bass clarinet) you can use a separate microphone, like a Shure SM57 or Shure SM58. It’s important that you’re getting very good audio quality straight out of the camera, since generally All-State requirements specify no editing. You can’t equal the Q8's audio quality straight out of a camera without spending over $6,000, so this video recorder provides great value for the cost. We're glad you found the video helpful, and please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Id argue you shouldn't get this simply because the camera has a good mic on it. I record drum covers, i record video with my phone, and have a drum mic setup. I just sync it in post. Maybe other acoustic instruments might be ok with this, but i wouldn't recommend it. Invest instead in mics to record music, even budget ones, and sync in post.

    hi! very informative video thanx! we need a video cam to record in my studio - we do need up to 2 hrs recording time, (how much time is available on the sd cards?) also- the stereo inputs on the back of the Q8? can i take a phono (stereo out) from my amp or mixer straight into those inputs? obviously i will need 2 leads with phono plugs and XLR on the other ends? thanx!

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you found it useful! We're pretty sure the camera can take up to 128GB cards, or even 256GB. The record mode (480, 720, 1080, 2K) will detemine how much time you get on the card. You can definitely get 2 hours of non-stop recording in 2K with a 128GB card. As for the inputs, you can go from a stereo out to the XLR combo port; it's a combo port so it takes either XLR (3 prong) or 1/4" (TRS) lines. So you could go from the stereo out of your phono (1/4" to the 1/4" combo of the Q8). Hope that helps!

    was curious how you would rate the ZOOM Q2N and Q2N-4K compared to this...for me it would be mainly for the cost reduction of the 150-200 range.....and i understand you lose the XLR/TRS in exchange for a stereo line-in...but are the audio recording qualities the same?..24 bit for audio only?...not sure what the bitrate is for audio+vid...16 bit?

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's possible the Q2N isn't sold anymore, but audio quality is comparable with the Q2N4K. The main difference is losing the XLR line inputs. Thank you for your question!

    Hi, does anyone know if this camera is able to produce just one audio file after a recording or are there a few files and it needs a mixer/software etc ... I need to upload a recording for a performance diploma and they will not accept the recording if it's been tampered with. So I was told I need just one MP4 or .Mov file and no tweaking or editing. Thanks

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, John, thanks - glad you liked the video! You can use this camera with a gimbal, but you will probably need to add weight to it (like an external battery) since the camera is so light. We are focusing on the audio features of this camera, so adding additional microphones to it will be a challenge with the gimbal.

    How do you record four discrete wave files with only two XLR inputs? That adapter you showed allows the two additional mic inputs? And if you record four separate channels, can you still record 4k video simultaneously?

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question! When using the built-in XY mic and 2 XLR ports, you have 4 channels of audio, but 2 of them are mixed down to a stereo track (the built-in XY) so you have 3 tracks (WAV files) but 4 channels of audio to work with in the edit. Or, if you use the EXH-6 (like we showed in the video) you can now have 4 Channels and 4 separate tracks. If you choose MOV+WAV, all of these tracks will be recorded (independently of the video in their own WAV files) as well as mixing all of them down to the 4K video file. You can then use the 4 independent tracks to further edit your audio/video. Hope that helps!

    I'm very intrigued by this camera.....I want to be able to mic a drumkit and music souce up into a 6 or 12 channel board and take the main outs into this camera to record my drums and what I'm playing to......have you done a video doing this?.....and what kind of program did you use to add reverb and compression to the sound?.......thanks

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thanks for subscribing! If you use the main outs of the board to go to the Q8, you will only get a stereo mixdown of the board, so you won't have isolated tracks like on the board (which you probably know). You can run the main outs from a mixing board into the camera and record stereo audio with video. We use Final Cut Pro to mix the audio, which has the same plugins as Logic Pro (both for Mac).

    Great video! Thanks very much!
    My big question as a blind musician is, of course, the accessibility of the product.
    1) Is there an iOS app where I can make settings that transfer to the camera?
    2) If there isn't, can I start recording on a pre set setting that a sighted person helps me with? I.e. once a sighted person has helped me to set up my preferred recording setting, will this be saved and be always ready on start-up?
    3) Is there a haptic record button that I can press without having to bother wit the touch screen?

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and these are great questions. Zoom Audio has updated this camera to this model - Zoom Q8n4k and offers an app called Q8n Control that is in the iOS App Store. This app needs a physical dongle to plug into the camera to use the Bluetooth. The BTA-1 and we have that here www.jwpepper.com/BTA-1-Bluetooth-Adapter/11401326.item#.YrMNTS-B0iw. This will control recording, playback, stopping and searching forward. There is not an option in the camera or in the app to save preset settings mainly because the audio is usually set using the physical knobs on the camera. There is a physical record button but this does not give haptic feedback you do not have to start recording from the touch screen. Hope this helps! Thanks again!

    Thanks for this video. Is there a way to improve the look of the video so it's not giving fisheye view?

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kaylia, thank you for the question! You can improve the fisheye but we don't think there is a way to do it in the camera. You can fix this in editing by cropping into the frame - if you record in the 3M(2k setting) when cropping to 1080 you will not lose resolution.

    Really great review, thanks a lot!! one question: do you think that camera can handle as well sounds from an amplifier, even with high level of distortion? (Connectic a micro, like a shure 57 would help I guess)

    • @jwpepper1876
      @jwpepper1876  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you - we're glad you liked it! If you're asking if it can record a guitar/band (heavy) without any distortion using the built in XY mics, yes, and with a very good results. For miking a guitar amp separately with a Shure SM57, yes, you could do this, but it would only be effective for tracking purposes as the mix with the whole band might be off just miking the guitar. Does that answer your question?
