Despite being dated, this video contains a lot of information regarding off-roading. I'm a new owner of a Land Cruiser and this helped me understand more my new vehicle. It is awesome!
My dad used to own a 1976 FJ40 model here in the United States. He still tells stories about how tough it was to this day. My favorite story he told me about it was how one winter when it snowed heavily, a local walmart parking lot had had snowplows go through the day before and pile all the snow from the entire parking lot into a giant mound in the corner of the lot. My dad had just gotten the land cruiser recently, and wanted to show his friends how tough it was. With all his buddies watching, he climbed the entire mound all the way to the top (about 20-30 feet high.) He managed to reach the tip, but then got stuck with the front wheels hanging over the front edge and not touching anything, and the back wheels hanging over the back edge, and not touching anything, sort of like this shape: 0-------0 ^ ^ So then, he and his friends got in their cars and all went to their homes, and got snow shovels. They then drove back to the lot where my dad's land cruiser was still stuck on the snow mound, and they all shoveled the entire mound out from under it over the course of about 3-4 hours, until he could drive off of it.
We've come a long ways in tire innovation and gone completely backwards in terms of building real off road machines. I love my 4Runner but it needs a lot of help to do this kind of offroading compared to a stock Cruiser from 30 years ago.
I remember using 4L on my Pajero sport going up a rocky steep hill. I let the car do its thing just as it’s mentioned in this video. It was scary but satisfying to know I worked with my car to make it to the top of the hill.
Good information never goes bad. This is a great video. I especially liked the 4WD animations, I've tried explaining these things to people, and this is better than trying to talk through it.
I have 1982 fj43 every one see it tell me its1960 its butter than new fj but manual gear its steel stronger than GM pick up one time fj43 stop and i try to push it by GM pick up from front the pumper of GM damage and fj nothing happen
Bloody hell the Aussie got how to look after and take care and kiwi got Barry crump thrashing it thru the bush mud and jumps with the dog flying flying off the back down a cliff
I see that most of the LC's in this video have "WARN" manual hubs. Were they standard equipment for these vehicles? My '85 has "AISIN" manual hubs (N.A model); so wondering if these LC's had the WARN hubs fitted afterwards or if they came stock?
Great video I miss real 4x4s... now all we have is motorised Virginia's with blue tooth , pathetic independent suspension and softcock air conditioning
Nah, no mention of parking it turned into the wall with handbrake on and ignition off. No mention of pre starts, log book or take 5's. And no mention of not getting caught having sneaky durries in the cab, by the shiftboss.
+Indy BUCHAN-HEPBURN Slightly misspelt, sorry! - Roadtrak Majors. Not bar tread. Hard to describe : lugged with radial style grooves/profile through the middle. I've never driven with them -seen a few old ones in wreckers in Aus. The 70 series still come from factory with the modern version - Dunlop SP Road Gripper 7.50 R16. I've got them on my 60 series with the split rims like in the vid.
Upper Castra thanks mate I have seen the Dunlop SP Road grippers on the current model 70 series troopys..and I had a smaller size SP Road gripper on my LJ suzuki ute..16 inch wheels..

The Earth hasn't changed much since this video was made, I mean it's not like a meteor crashed on Earth bringing some alien kind of rock

I just love the good old days videos. They are nostalgic.
Man I miss old school mechanical toyotas
those skinny tires are sensational
this is still amazing for me and my 2018 4Runner to learn from
4 years of weekly offroading, never broke down , man do i miss my old BJ60 !
This is awesome... Dammit I miss Australia, I miss my lovely Cattle Station and most of all I miss my 70-series Cruiser!!!!
This is inspiring, next time with my Cruiser ill wear dress shoes khaki pants and a dress shirt.
Nothing better for a rocky terrain

relevant to this day. learned so much
This is really, REALLY good wheeling advice regardless of the model year of your 4x4, I’m so sad I haven’t seen this before
Great video. The smart approach always wins out and I loved seeing those FJ-40’s.

A stock 3rd gen could do this shit no problem, especially with a locker
Great video with the lovely old 40 series Landcruisers, some lovely old early Hiluxs too!😍
Lots of great tips and tricks. .
New hiluxs is better
@@Rashed2030 😂😂😂oh please all new cars are electroplastics rubbish that do not last the test of time!
That trick with the jack is damn clever!
And the days of hubs like that are gone unfortunately. So people don’t have to leave there vehicle… glad I own an 80 series.

everyone should watch this, great information.
I learned a great deal from the vid.
Glad I found this great video! Cool tips and great cars and that Baby Making bass line!
great trucks, great country, great days...
Love the guy in his stacks and loafers off roading. lol
You know it's an old video when the all the 40 series shown still have working hand brakes
🤣 truth
Ford guy here but years ago i had a FJ 60 and 62, awesome wagons, preferred the 60 though with a manual trans.
Hello! Thank you for the video. I would lift the bonnet to prevent injury from snapping winch cables.😊
Yes, Its ok to have them locked in while in 2wd. Having them unlocked though can reduce wear and tear on the front axle components.
If only the Toyota Land Cruiser today were built the way they were 30 yrs ago.
***** The owners have gotten soft?
I don't know. Have they?
Yes they have the land cruiser 70 which is very old school, but only the engine and the basic interior plus some modernisation, that's it
I have 1982 fj43 every one see it tell me its1960 its butter than new fj but manual gear its steel stronger than GM pick up one time fj43 stop and i try to push it by GM pick up from front the pumper of GM damage and fj nothing happen
Sadly they no longer make car as great look and good like these any more
Old video though, But very informative and good guide lines. 👍👍
Good old Toyota split rims they can get you anywhere.
Just goes to show you don't need really big grippy tires.
Why... Why....??? Why Toyota stop making such a fantastic car, so that we younger people can't enjoy it!
pitot1988 Buy a used one. There are still plenty left in great condition.
Safety, comfort , luxury
Just buy the old one
Now we have new LC serie70
Awesome vid thanks for uploading!
also important is lower tyre pressure in sand or if you need more traction,.. mainly in sand lower tyre pressure
That’s in part 2
Thank you👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻Toyota
Excellent 👌 video
interesting video, classical models!
Australian icons👍
Bloody hell the Aussie got how to look after and take care and kiwi got Barry crump thrashing it thru the bush mud and jumps with the dog flying flying off the back down a cliff
Got a 1st gen 4runner (1984). Is it wrong to be seductively eyeing off a HJ60 as well?
the person who disliked this drives a Prius
If frogs could drive, they would drive the Toyota Lancruiser. Ribbit!
Looks like 1981 as that WA number plate is around 1981 circa
Yep, 1981
Great stuff. Are modern 'cruisers any more capable? Nup - just more comfortable.
hdmccart Capable and comfortable
Maybe capable but with its modern electronics, less capable than the classic diesel in water crossings.
I have never understood why anyone would want to be "comfortable" overlanding? Getting jarred around is part of the experience and fun.
@@MD-wq6on At last! I have found someone who thinks exactly how I do about "comfort" in offroading/overlanding. Doesn't make sense at all

The best ever!
Watching 2022
Anyone know of any Cruiser HJ60 maintenance videos?
there isn't many mate may be you could do one? :-)
i drive a hilux :) cheers to all the hilux!
cheers 🍺
👍 cheers M8
Is it ok to drive a 4wd vehicle in 2wd with the front hubs locked, or should they be unlocked at all times during 2wd driving?
Today, it uses crawl control
Great video I miss real 4x4s... now all we have is motorised Virginia's with blue tooth , pathetic independent suspension and softcock air conditioning
This comes in 480p?!

Ah! Ok. I've never owned or driven a Toyota 4wd, either a Hilux or Land Cruiser.
someone needs to find the music in this video
hi, can i use part 1 and 2 for my TH-cam channel?
to the car editors that one part is at 5:01 :)
N° 91 shorty I would pay $50k for in that condition, it’s most likely no more.
Back to basics land cruiser
is this a mining induction in the safe use of 4x4 LV

Jesus what size are those tires?
+TheCanadianKush Look like Dunlop Road Track Majors - standard factory rubber at that time 7.50 R16

excellent advice.....not like half the tossers that drive 4wds these days

They are the original factory tyres that come to this day in 2020 with Land Cruisers 70 series. They are the best!
