This episode also gives a reason to why Grogar brought in Cozy Glow. She may not be as powerful as her co-workers, but she is possibly more cunning than both Chrysalis and Tirek combined.

A phenomenal episode in every possible way. It's intriguing, it's funny, it's witty, it's unpredictable, it's unique in it's perspective, full of character development, and it does a marvelous job of making us relate to and feel for the baddies while still retaining everything that makes them threatening villains.
Personally I think Grogar already knows they have his bell but is letting this scheme of their's play out to see if they can improve there teamwork even more.

Interesting! I can see that, though I do not know much about Grogar as much as other MLP fans.
He said he doesnt trust what they beforehand and pretty sure he meant it. My guess is that he doesnt need them just to minions and canon fodder but maybe for a ritual to restore his full power.

Because this is the final season and they are pulling out all the stops to make it one of the best, if not THE best, seasons in the show.

I have still not been able to watch "My Fair Yona", _despite_ Yona being my second favourite of young 6.
I liked the treehouse one, but i guess Titan hades has a point, but then again, it can't always be perfect.
Best thing about this episode: it puts us in the position of rooting for the heroes to win, while also not necessarily wanting the villains to lose.
Given that Michael Vogel has worked on Young Justice and Spectacular Spider-Man, it should be no surprise that he's great at writing compelling villains.

These three did give me similar vibes to how the Sinister 6 play off of each other.
Its obvious. The bell itself probably has a spell on itself that prevents detection. When ALL magic weakened, the magic on the mountain probably did too which allowed Grogar to sense its location.
Interesting theory. And when the magic was restored he can't detect it again.
But he would still know where he originally detected it before magic was restored. On that mountain. Which is the reason he's moving forth with his plans now
And if I was Gusty, I would have taken every precaution needed to keep that bell away from Grogar. Including putting a spell on it to make sure he couldn't detect where it is. Making it a great reason to recruit the other villains. So they take the brunt of whatever wards Gusty might have cast to stop him. Don't take any chances when you can have some expendable pawns do it for you.

Chrysalis kind of going a little crazy without her hive makes sense. She's a hive being. She is meant to live eusocially. Her being alone would be even worse that a human living alone.

That's sad if you think about it..., no wonder why she consideres friendship a desease
1. One of the members of her hive betrays her by befriending her enemies
2. When the whole hive finds a source of eternal food, traitor comes back and take down her whole kingdom
3. Traitor proclaims himself new king and her whole hive follows him and looks different
4. Traitor's friend wants to give her a chance to return to her hive..., without her place as queen, as a subject of the traitor and being feared/hated (Ocelus greatest fear is to be like her, I think that became a common fear for reformed Changelings) by her previous subjects..., I think I wouldnt have liked to return like that neither...
And they wanted to make her accept friendship... Hmmm..., not a chance (and I dont think she will ever be redeemed) but shes more interesting like this
Also as queen she's above others so her new 'friends' can not fill that void since she has to be their equal.
Then you factor in that she's the queen of the hive in the same sense as bees, termites and ants all of the changelings are her children
If you look carefully, the bell the "frenemies" brought with them has cracks, whereas the one Grogar had visualised looked completely fine. The magic keeping the others from getting the bell initially also looked like Grogar's magic. Just thought that was interesting.

Yeah, as soon as I watched this episode I immediately wanted to watch it again. X) Best episode of the season hands down, and possibly one my favorites of the series too! Can't wait to review this one! ^w^
You know, seeing Gusty's silhouette in the episode gives me an idea for a crazy theory. What if Gusty the Great is the mother/distant ancestor of Celestia and Luna? Her silhouette is seen with flowing hair, which is a trait associated primarily with Celestia and Luna. On top of that, G1 Gusty was a white-coated pony with blue eyes, and what do you know, Celestia is a white-coated pony, and Luna has blue eyes. (Plus, the thought that the ancestor to Equestria's rulers was responsible for defeating the creature that now threatens Equestria is certainly fun to consider.)

Did anyone else find it interesting how when tirek brought up discord, chrysalis mentioned how great discord was until he was reformed. She seemed to know him, or at least know of him. I wonder if they have a history or if she just knows him by reputation. Also, if discord was never reformed, then would grogar have recruited him? If so, then what would he have done with him and how would he interact with the other villains?
Of course they know of Discord. Discord actually succeeded in taking over Equestria, and he's the first villain that Celestia and Luna have ever used the elements of harmony against. In the season 4 finale, Tirek even said "You are Discord. You are Legend". So Chrysalis knowing about him, is no surprise.

Everything would be different, and it is hard to say how exactly.
As interesting it is, discord is like Loki or Q. A trickster that's has his own agenda reformed yes but is he reliable
Well we didn't know if tia and Luna used the elements against tirek, his Normal form is the past was his third form. He was weakend all this time in Tartarus. But I agree that discord seemed the only one after grogar that succeeded in taking over equestria.

The episode was very interesting, i mean with the song, and all the creatures that Chrysalis shapeshifted into which feel like callbacks from previous seasons, except for when she transformed into an Ophiotaurus (A half bull, half serpent creature from Greek mythology) that was a new one...and of course the scene where Tirek absorbed Chrysalis's magic and then returned it really shed some light on the subject of his abilities, because for a longtime i wondered if Tirek could also return magic as well as take it, and lo and behold it turns out that he can.
Yeah, I'm hoping that with Chrysalis's vulnerability and Tirek's honor, the two _hopefully three_ get reformed.

Indeed, I have often wondered why Chrysalis never uses her shape shifting so it was good to see she is willing and able to when it is helpful. I like how Tirek's reaction to his first experience of having someone else showing him trust is like Discord's was, almost down to the words and tone. Also I wonder if Chrysalis could turn into a copy of Grogar or Tirek, and if so would she have access to their abilities?

I bet Grogar knows that they're thinking of betraying him. He's probably letting them think that he doesn't know that they have the bell since that is making them work together, which is something he wanted from the start. Whatever Grogar's plan it involves them working together for some reason but I bet he was going to back-stab them anyway.
I agree. The whole time I'm thinking that Grogar has the seeing eye orb and that he was watching them the whole time. It's probably why he lets the whole bell issue go, despite it being ultra important to him.

I really think he knows and is playing along with there scheme. With his power alone he could probably detect it and he could've spyed on them with his orb. He doesn't seem like the Villian to just let 3 devious Villians wander free without keeping an eye on them.
I did get the impression that he had been watching them for some time when he first summoned them.

I loved this episode! My favorite episode of this season so far. I knew I was going to like it from the moment I read the synopsis, but the actual execution of it exceeded all of my expectations!

A cool detail I noticed is that not only do the Mane 6 not appear but they don't even get a cameo (aside from Crissy's impression of Twilight).
The way they all 3 form an alliance at the end is great, it reminds me of how you can look over history and see 2 world powers join up to fight a common foe then they will fight each other afterwards. I also loved the bit where Tirek just sat back and waited for the other 2 to fail so they could form a better plan from the intel. I suspect the reason Grogar did not try to get the bell himself is that he knew his old foe would setup a block to prevent him from getting in (which was the case) and he was hoping that between the 3 of them they would figure a way past it.
Nice to see were finally seeing what the villains are doing.

As to Cryssi transforming for added strength, we have seen that a couple times
Ocellus changed in uprooted to pull the rope, she couldn’t budge in her normal from
Pharynx changed to tackle the Maulwurf in to change a changeling.
And Thorax turned into some sort of Bear when he thought he had to defend Spike from Ember
Though he didn’t really show the strength of that bear, I think...I’m gonna have to rewatch that one.
If this is like in gen 1, he might not be able to leave his hide out, and can only summon others who compleatly rejects goodness and friendship to him. And what ever magic that Gusty used to defeat him might be weaking.

Not only was "Tirek absorbing Chrysalis' magic" specifically set up earlier, the whole thing about the them trusting eachother to put themselves in a vulnerable state was also foreshadowed. Remember Cozy Glow's blindfolded teamwork exercises during the song? It's basically the same thing, and it's also Cozy Glow who suggests Chrysalis letting Tirek drain her magic.
Maybe he’s trapped in that swamp by some spell and can’t leave until he gets his bell
Whatever happens, it will no doubt be ponyriffic 🦄
The Queen really got to shine in this episode. Chrysalis is best Queen of the Changelings 😎
Chrysalis was talking to the log evil Twilight was turned back into in the mean six.
One of the best things about this season is that Twilight and Co don't know about Grogar or the Villain alliance. So when the finale comes, and that could very well be a three-parter (which would be wonderful), it's the BIG reveal and it affects not just Equestia, but EVERY nation across the land, leading to the greatest Friendship counter, where every creature across the land join together for a Friendship Spirit Bomb of sorts, and even then it wouldn't be enough, and Twilight would have to find something else at the last minute to overtake Grogar's full power.

It's also good to see development of Chrysalis. She isn't just without emotion. She cared about the hive in her own way and it's 'fall' really affected her tremendously.
I can’t believe I never noticed but Grogar was mentioned in the episode Flurry of Emotions, when Twilight tells stories to the fillies in the hospital. (I’ve been rewatching all of the mlp episodes in celebration of the new season. 😅) Not sure if that was the first time he was ever mentioned though... 🤔

Edit: Also, forgot to mention how much I absolutely LOVED this episode. I’ve watched it five times already. On top of the great writing and lore building, the song is fantastic and Chrysalis loving cupcakes is the best. Those little details like Cozy still trying manipulate ponies, Chrysalis scaring away the monsters in the forest, and Tirek’s lounging added much more personality to characters that many fans already adore. Their interactions with each other are never disappointing. I’m also admittedly eager to see where this ‘backstabbing’ plan goes. *squees* SO EXCITED. 😍
This is one of my favorite episodes of this season alone! This and Sparkle's Seven.
I _want_ to think Rusty is more important than we realize because we don't see his cutie mark. He's been there forever, maybe Rusty Buckets is related to Gusty the Great? Or maybe it was just Grogar in disguise all along, aiming to help nudge them in the right directions.
You know, since Grogar has that all-seeing crystal ball thing, I doubt he'll be fooled for long and will double cross the double crossers. Or, he might decide that, while in the process of double crossing them, he gets Discord under his control so that he can tighten his control on the three villains and become even more powerful. Kinda like:
"well, these three idiots are no good. Time to bring in the real powerhouse."
My first thought on the song was All Dogs go to Heaven 2's Feels so Good to be Bad
They got to the backstab idea quicker than I thought, but alliances of convenience, particularly those based on a shared hatred tend to collapse when victory is near.
This episode had me in stitches!!
"I AM CUTE AND ADORABLE!!"
It just hit me, this episode kind of reminded me of Kim Possible, more specifically the A Sitch in Time movie, when all of her enemies are trying to work together to find an ancient artifact, the way they scheme and bicker back and forth.
Oh my gosh that twist ending!
Also this episode kind of foreshadows what I expect will be the resolution of this season: In learning to act together like true friends, the villains kind of defeat themselves in the process.
(Chrysalis seems to joss the idea though.)
I just saw it! I couldn't stop laughing!! And the song was amazingly entertaining and I love how the mention gusty from the beginning when mlp began. So nice callback to that and I'll totally voice Chrysalis for that therapy treatments!! And I love that the three are starting to form a friendship but deny it for power by going against Grogar with their strengths!
I theorize that these three now working together will be the ones who, either stop Grogar's plan or help Twilight and the mane six stop Grogar. We see that they realized working together felt good, implicating a change of heart. Though they backtracked they are still working together, which leads me to believe they will form a strong bond and the real enemy they will unite against is actually Grogar. I mean it'd be pretty interesting to see how they would fit into equestrian society if reformed like Discord.
The thing is that that’s what makes a great team up. The fact that they point out each other’s flaws and failures is better than a sanctimonious group telling each other they love and respect one another no matter what. It gets old and it does not reflect on real life.
You make in of your friends failures. You bond over loss and making fun of the other. Oh don’t just hug it all out. That has always been stupid. This is why this works: because it reflects real companionship more than anything else. Because no matter how much of a saint you think you are...

I’m pretty sure the log that Chrysalis was talking to was Mean Twilight.
Grogar must be aware of the possibility that they would try to backstab him. He knows how they all think, and he made a point of stating that he was more powerful than the three of them combined. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Also interesting is the fact that the bell is protected by super-powerful winds. In G1 Gusty could do wind magic. Are the winds caused by a protective spell she cast? And how powerful must she have been to make a spell that could last all that time?
The original title for this episode was "Meanwhile at the Legion of Doom"
Grogar's "orb" is actually the eye of the cyclops that stole the Griffon's treasure and then fell off the cliff.
You know, that would actually be a really cool detail.

What I liked is that they gave Tirek a flaw to his absorbing power. Because I was wondering when Grogar send them out: "What is stoping Tirek to absorb the Magic in the Bell?" I am glad that it was explained
Chrysalis will shapeshift into Grogar and use his own bell against him in the finale. That is my prediction.

The faces Cozy Glow makes throughout the episode are priceless.
I always love a good villain team-up and so far, these guys are definitely delivering the wicked fun. And I'm excited to see how their little secret betrayal attempt is going to play out, even though I already have a pretty good idea.
Another amazing thing about this episode is the main actresses weren't involved in any way. I mean in every other episode one or more of the main actresses who voice the mane 6 or Spike still does voice over. Even with their minimal dialogue in Slice of Life, four of the actresses Andrea, Ashleigh, Tabitha, and Cathy still provided voice for others like Lyra, Bonbon, Derpy and Mayor Mare. But in this ep it was just five actors who weren't the mane cast
Grogar can watch through his magic ball...what if Grogars is testing the threes loyalty, that's why Grogar didn't do it himself, maybe Grogar knew their plan so he played along.

Calling it now; Chrysalis will probably transform into a colorful Changedling by the end of the series. Most likely in the final episode with a declaration of "They're my friends!", "Stay away from my friends!"... or something very similar.
Oh that would of been great, but we got what we did instead. Either way it could of ended, fans wouldn't have been happy. Stone? Upset they didn't get reformed. Reformed? Upset because Chrysalis is such an iconic villain to change in the finale. But the villains, even if not entirely reforming to good, still remaining as friends would of been nice.
This one blew me away as an episode. I currently think that the trio will continue towards friendship, having it deliberately show either when its betrayal time or one of them is significantly hurt. Probably more in a Tsundere style if not Cozy Glow showing concern/taking action. The bell, my mind leans towards Cozy getting its power for an episode and losing herself to it. That or the big bad gets it and the trio alliance up with some heroes to stop him in the finale.
I have an idea that could make for an interesting plot twist and would fit right into this story.
Starlight is a descendent of Gusty the Great. Which would explain her incredible magic. And be a great reason why they haven't shown Starlight's mother yet, maybe because of something to do with Grogar, a family responsibility. Maybe Grogar 'delt' with her already.
Grogar was the one who helped push a vulnerable Starlight (from Sunburst leaving ) down her dark path in order to try to corrupt Gustys bloodline. Maybe Starlight gets the idea from a disguised Grogar as a misguided way to make real friends. Classic case of revenge by trying to make your enemy exactly like you.
Seriously, this stuff writes itself.

I knew Cozy Glow was shifty back in season 7, and her being the villain at the end of the season didn't surprise me. Her motivations did confuse me though.
I did not understand what made her goal to be “Empress of Friendship” worthy of having when it is literally a plan built on the ideals of “mean school girl”. “I have more friends than you so neener neener.”
But watching "Frenemies" and seeing Cozy Glow drop her "cutesy" act for much longer periods of time finally gave me insight into her character, and more intrigue. I love her outbursts and her exaggerated expressions are hilarious!
I can't believe I'm saying it... but Cozy Glow instantly became my favorite villain of the series in this episode.
Okay, prediction time. I think those three might actually end up teaming up with Twilight and the others to fight against Grogar. He'll discover they kept his bell from him, get angry, take it from them and use his new power to try and kill them. They'll escape, and know they have no chocie but to side with the ponies in order to stop him, if only to save their own skins.
Guess we'll wait and see ;)
I think it would just be hilarious to have the villains truly embrace friendship, and STILL be evil. Form their own little Legion of Doom!

I do think they will get reformed and save the ponies in the end against Grogar. The seed of friendship and love is planted here, and it will grow.
I for one thought it was very strange hearing Tirek sing.

What if Grogar knows that they got the bell? But he won't let them know that... yet?
I found it interesting that Chrysalis mentioned she recognised the friendship feelings as being similar to what she felt towards her lost hive.
Well she WAS the QUEEN there, everyone was devoted to her, trusting and helping her. It would make anyone feel good.
I loved this episode. It ironically gave me an understanding of what could be done with Chrysalis for any story that wants to focus on her reformation, by neatly organizing her issues. Because once you understand a problem you can work to address it. Chrysalis is psychologically scarred from what Friendship did to her by taking away her hive from her. So why would she WANT friendship, when all it did was destroy her life? I find that absolutely fascinating.
There's one thing I couldn't help but wonder after watching this episode: Grogar knows *exactly* where his bell is now (Mount Everhoof). So... what? Is he going to keep sending the three back over and over again, until they get it? If that's the case, would that be the trio's opportunity to either work with each other more, with the function of the bell, or just further plot their backstabbing plan with Grogar? Even if the writers go about it creatively, that kind of route would seem a bit redundant and... well, repetitive. Eventually, say by attempt #3, Grogar's going to end up going about getting what he's been seeking for thousands of years in another way. By being depowered without his bell in his possession, his patience is already stretched thin. It's something he's been waiting to reunite with for so long, after all.
True villains in that type of situation will only take so much BS. He's only going to take so much tomfoolery before he says: "You know what? Since you three are being completely useless, I'm going to tag along and make sure you three are able to get it, this time." What will happen by that point? What happens when they make it to the top, only for the bell to not be there? Grogar knows that not just anypony could waltz in and take it, so easily. The fact that Gusty's exploits with Grogar are in at *least* one book, chances are most of society will think as many had so long ago about Nightmare Moon: that it's just an old pony's tale. That narrows down his suspects, and he'll immediately realize the three got it and have been keeping it from him. By that point, I can only imagine that it'll be like whenever a child comes up with an elaborate white lie to their parent(s): it works at first, only for their efforts to come dangerously close to being discovered, and your attempts to evade them from discovering become more transparent. Can Chrysalis shapeshift into objects? Who the heck knows, but they're playing a dangerous game, either way.
I seriously doubt Grogar has forgotten what his most important possession looks like. Grogar isn't a fool... or I at least hope he's not. Please, *please*, don't write one of the most iconic Gen. 1 villains into a convenient "I'll overlook this" corner. Out of all the Gen. 1 villains, it was both Tirek and Grogar that had the darker, more sinister tones to their agendas. They portray this version of Grogar in this final season like he's the ultimate, ancient threat. If he's smart enough to know that working together is of the utmost importance, then he's smart enough to consider all angles of a situation by working with other fellow villains. Revealing that he either knew all along or that it was one of the many outcomes he predicted as a possibility before summoning them to his lair, would be the ideal outcome, but who knows? Guess we'll just have to see what the staff actually does.
But in all seriousness, I too was shocked that Grogar didn't have some sort of connection with being able to detect his own talisman. If it has the bulk of your essence, SURELY you'd have some tie to sensing it. Or perhaps he does, but he's playing the fool to throw them off? Eh, I'm just rambling, at this point. *shrugs*
It would be delicious irony if Chrysalis ,Cozy, and Tirek were the ones to save Equestria from Grogar

I think Groger is actually stuck in that layer, all he seems to do is walk out of scene they don’t show him leave, they don’t show what he’s been doing and it seems a little unusual for somebody as powerful as he is, couldn’t get his own bell.
Ps. I also think that that might very well be the mean six Twilights log chrysalis has with her.
Wow, I just saw the episode too and it was absolutely HILARIOUS!!! That was one of the BEST episodes ever! I loved it! Oh, Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy we're absolutely hilarious. The way they were blaming each other, laughing on each other's mistakes, concurrenting who is the smartest, strongest and best leader... It was awesome! And especially the new song ,,Better ways to be bad". Honestly, I never thought that a new villain song was coming but it was just the best!!!
And of course the moment they worked together was... well, yes, magical. For a short time. They could betrey each other as they always wanted to do, but they didn't. They didn't. Tirek could leave Chrysalis without magic and leave Cozy in the cave. But they worked as a team. And in this moment I saw something. I can't explain it, but now I am sure that this three will reform. I am just sure. They may not know it yet, but they more than frenemies now. They are some kind of friends. And who has friendship, can change!
But that doesn't stop them from trying to destroy the mane six, tho. Or betraying Grogar. A big danger is coming!
Plot twist: Grogar put the bell there and it is actually a way to keep tabs on the villains when he is not around

About Crysalis and the log, think about it, she's used to being in a hive, with constant social interactions. Going from an entire kingdom to sociolize with to being alone was probably harder for her to adjust to, and in a way, she hasn't adjusted at all. She can't trust the other two, so the log is her only companion, the only one she knows won't betray her; which even her own people did.
Another interesting note, she and pinkie pie are so far the only ones to personify and talk to inanimate objects when hitting a low point. Just an interesting connection.
Prediction: Tirek, Cozy, and Chrysalis are going to learn the power of friendship on their own to take down Grogar in the end alongside all the other creatures. We will see Chrysalis's new bug form too.
