I love that it's a true sequel to the first game, you play as the grandson of the first Harvest Moon's farmer and we even can interact with Ellen (one of HM's Bachelorettes), now an old woman. Sadly Back to Nature picked the same characters and changed their personalities, family and roles, making it a mess lol
I always disliked how BtN and FoMT mixed up all of the characters 😆 They're great games but I still get confused when I play them and no one's at the right place. 😅 I'd love to see more games in the future that continue with the SNES and 64's universe!

About the Ann cutscene, she's just checking if you're fit to be a horse racer (she thinks you'll do well but her brother disagrees) and her horse is called Cliff and she gave you his little brother for you to raise. Cliff (the human) has a rival event where he learn about the horse having the same name.
I am right there with you. I still count HM64 in my top ten favorite games. This was my childhood and I play it through every few years. I think it might be time for another run!
Harvest Moon 64 is IMO the greatest harvest moon/story of seasons game ever made. There was so much charm! There were so many hidden things to find, amazing character development, and so much more. I remember when I was a kid I liked the art on the box and ended up buying it based on that. I knew nothing about the series. Ended up falling in love with it and the series and it became one of my top 5 favorite games of all time♥️

The fishing minigame is actually quite easy even on a flatscreen tv once you know the best times to fish. I always fish as the sun is going down and can usually catch around 3-5 large fish very quickly. Once the music stops and it turns night you should usually stop.

This is what I would consider a timeless game. I don't think they'll ever remake it, but this was the game I played the most of as a teenager. Do you think your interest in pink hair started with Popuri? Oh and fishing is definitely only worth the power berry and recipes. I think you need 2 big fish and one more of any size. Those save states come in handy for catching a big fish because the timing seems fixed once you use the rod. Edit: of course it's fixed if using savestates. The RNG gets the sane seed (facepalm).

If I may share a tip of my own for anyone looking to play: the "Water" that both the Bakery and Bar sell for free will restore a small amount of stamina points and they are unlimited so feel free to have as many as your patience allows. If you ran out of energy but desperately need to finish watering your plants, you can do it if one of the two are still open! Just be aware that Josh's point about fatigue at night still stands.
I’m really struggling with the controls. How did you whistle for your dog on Switch? How did you put away things you picked? The arrow keys weren’t working at all for me. I was playing on my TV, not handheld, if it matters
The right stick functions as the C-buttons for N64 games on Switch. This works better for some games than others, as you can imagine. EDIT: Either that or ZR + face buttons.

I went through an entire playthrough of Harvest Moon 64 not knowing you could make wood fences. I ended up keeping most of the rocks on my farm just so I could make fences.

I am so lost with this game, I'm wondering if i was spoiled with "Harvest Moon: Back to Nature" on the PlayStation. HM 64 feels slow and clunky to me. Is there no way to quick swap tools? No way to quickly switch between items in your rucksack?
A little late here but I wish they remake this to fix the QoL that doesn't fit the modern standards while also retaining most of the lovable features of the game, especially the rival marriage (which is unfortunately highly unlikely at this point)
This seriously looks exactly the same as my first ever farming sim which was harvest moon on the PS1 which ive been told is friends of mineral town Curious to know of any differences. Even the characters seem to be the same. So confusing lol
Firstly the ps1 game is called back to nature, Secondly many of the characters use the same sprites and names but are functionally different. Popuri helps with the flower shop and not the poultry ranch, Rick is not her brother but rather a unrelated inventor who is much nicer then the rick in btn, Kai is a worker on the winery rather than a guy who strolls into town only in the summers and runs a shop on the beach, and many more changes in this vain. also the layout of the town is completely different and the camera on the farm can be shifted to different set intervals. the character moves in 8-way directional movement rather that 4-way. a lot of the rival are different from btn (popuri doesn't marry kai for example).

It's really not obvious at first that you can take out the lumber! Stones have an advantage though as never don't break.
This is one of the best Harvest Moons my only complaint is the days are short, but it has the best festivals. I miss the Easter egg hunt.
