How to Develop an Offshore Bass Pattern

  • It's relatively easy to fish down a shoreline and spot good-looking spots, but finding productive offshore areas requires some searching with electronics and a smart lures strategy. Major League Fishing pro, David Walker, explains how he locates productive offshore areas using a combination of sonar technologies and a handful of lures that span aggressive to finesse.
    NEKO RIG SETUP
    • WORM - Z-Man SMH WormZ, color - Green Pumpkin: wired2.fish/3m...
    • NEKO WEIGHT - Z-Man Neko ShroomZ: wired2.fish/3x...
    • HOOK - Gamakatsu G-Finesse Weedless Stinger Neko Hook: wired2.fish/3z...
    • LINE (mainline) - Sunline Xplasma Asegai Braided Line, 16-pound: wired2.fish/3Q...
    • LINE (leader) - Sunline New Shooter Fluorocarbon, 7-pound: wired2.fish/3z...
    • REEL - Shimano Vanford C300XG Spinning Reel: wired2.fish/3x...
    • ROD - Shimano G Loomis Conquest, 7' 6" Medium-Light Spinning Rod: wired2.fish/3N...
    TACKLE USED
    • CRANKBAIT - Strike King Silent Series 6XD: wired2.fish/3x...
    • FOOTBALL JIG - Z-Man David Walker's CrosseyeZ Football Jig: wired2.fish/39...
Walker recommends spending a good amount of time at the steering wheel looking for sweet spots such as where deep brush interests a creek channel. He drops waypoints on his side and down scan, then takes to the bow where forward-facing sonar further defines the structure and cover and confirms or denies the presence of fish.
Walker prefers starting his fishing with a fast-moving reaction bait like a crankbait. A crankbait scours a specific depth with utmost efficiency. He then works in spoons to see if the vertical up and down motion is a better trigger than a fast and horizontal crankbait.
Switching gears, a Texas-rigged worm is always a must-try when bass are hunkered down in the brush or grass. Walker then pivots to a big-profiled football jig and drags it across the bottom. When everything else fails to produce bites, a weedless Neko rig setup starts generating bites and reveals a viable pattern.
By fishing different types of offshore structure and cover and then honing in on which baits work best, Walker can then repeat the pattern throughout the lake.

Very good video David Walker. I enjoyed it immensely. Many years ago you and I worked the Bass expo in Maryland for Mare Inc and Ranger boats. Take care.

Flexibility is what's works for me, 5 presentations is my typical M.O. this time of year until the water drops below 65F.

Very informational. get so impatient fishing offshore and I just want to start fishing when I find a school. Definitely need to take some time to understand what's going on at the bottom and rotate through different baits

We try for a mix of evergreen and seasonal. This one should serve summer bass anglers well. Thanks for watching.

Finesse techniques seem to be the ticket this year The Skeeter owner tournament at Lake Fork was won on a shakey head 11lb largemouth also NY just broke the state record for smallmouth on a drop shot 8.58lb

Not to discredit his 2 first place finishes, nor his winnings of over $2 million, or his decades of experience. But if I was rollin Shimano and Loomis with graphs like he has, I’d definitely be fining bigger fish than the two dinks he found in the ditch.
