I think Wheeljack's personality of being a mad scientist whose inventions didn't always work came from the fact his alt-mode, a Lancia, had a well-earned reputation of being innovative but the innovations didn't always work and was prone to breakdowns. Top Gear did a segment about the Lancia where the car did break down while Stigg was driving it.
As Clarkson put it best: "This, is a collection of art; of madness; of brilliance. This, is a collection of pornography; this, is a collection of Lancias."
Something to note about Prime Wheeljack is that he was in fact quite a good mechanic just like in the original. He actually helped create a drone in Season 3 to follow Lazerbeak. Some characters are actually surprised about it, and Wheeljack says that nobody was born a warrior, implying that he wasnt always the fighter he became, and had to take on arms due to the war.
I really liked the fact that all the autobots have implied that they were just living their lives as laborers, archivists, and so on before the war in Prime
I always loved Prime Wheeljack having a subtle trace of his classic G1 personality. He was obviously a far departure from the norm, but he had very small moments of ingenuity and mechanical wizardry that helped him feel a little less jarring. Not to mention how most of his plans in battle tend to blow up in his face, as is par for the course with good old Jackie.
Wheeljack was not only the first bot to be seen in the first episode of the original cartoon, he also had the first line of dialogue, and was the first to transform into an alternate mode. Wheeljack was masterfully voiced by Chris Latta, who also voiced Starscream and Sparkplug Witwicky! One thing that I have ways been curious to know is why he had those things on the sides of his helmet that would light up in synch with his speech and how he had a solid, unmoving mask over his mouth. Other bots who had a face mask (Optimus Prime, Soundwave, etc.) had ones that moved as they spoke, without anything lighting up. No other bot ever had either of those features that I can recall. Thanks to his "Mad Scientist" personality profile...I always imagined that one of his weaponry experiments must have backfired on him in his past, perhaps almost beyond the point of repair. So an alternate method was developed: a face plate covered what was once his mouth and nose and his vocal circuitry had to be rerouted to output via synchronized audio-visual emmisions from the apparatus on the sides of his head. Maybe I used to think too much about these characters when I was a kid?!?
I'm fairly sure the head was a holdover from his Diaclone toy, and Hasbro kept it possibly out of expedience, or to make him easier to establish as an individual.
Okay, -so I'm the only one who thought of those as his ears? Yes I thought his ears lit up when he spoke... ( Perhaps I thought to weirdly about these characters as a child)

Rodimus Unicronus you know I thought the exact same thing thing when I saw him and thought to myself “has Hasbro recognised Thew and is honouring him in the show?” This is the first time I’m being introduced to the character.
I have always loved Wheeljack. Building the Dinobots in the original cartoon cemented him as a favorite. I do, however, really like his incarnation in Prime. If they had found a way to meld his warrior self with the inventive style, like creating weapons for the wreckers, would have been amazing!! As a request, I'd love to see the basics on Springer or Triple Changers in general!
Prime had all the advanced equipment either coming in the form of relics or off of Ultra Magnus' ship, but Wheeljack did at least get a few engineering moments - he fixed two ships in the series, his own and Magnus' (the latter without permission), hid a grenade inside Laserbeak, and made the drone thingy that imitated Laserbeak and was supposed to help locate the Nemesis... I think... anyways, that thing was shot down by Starscream, despite it being escorted by Optimus Prime.
I actually really loved his Prime Wrecker version he was a bamf every time he was on screen and my favorite battle in that series was Wheeljack and Ultra Magnus vs Predaking
At first, I was surprised by Wheeljack's characterization in TF:P. But I grew to like his character. The role of scientist has already been taken by Ratchet (who was mostly a medic in G1). So turning him into a loose cannon as a foil to the rigid Ultra Magnus was a great idea. Plus, he was a great supplement to Bulkhead's backstory as well.
Gotta say, I really enjoyed Wheeljack in the Prime series. His new personality and backstory really grew on me, and he ended up being one of my favorite characters. Not to mention, he and Ultra Magnus had one of the best fights in the series against Predaking.

Wheeljack is a very special transformer for me. He’s my favorite Autobot and he kinda introduced me to rally racing as well (I’m a gearhead) since his alt mode is a Lancia Stratos rally car ❤️🛠️
I remember really liking wheeljack when I watched transformers prime of a morning. I specifically remember in prime him throwing a ball of scrap, ratchet getting pissed, hitting agent foulers (I definitely spelt that wrong) door to his office. Also i remember him saying he thought bulkhead would catch it. God it’s been so long.....
"The toy that would become Wheeljack was originally released as part of the Japanese--- **DIACLONE TOYLINE!!!!**" Recurring information is delivered in such a uniform manner across all of your videos that I can't help but chant the "diaclone toyline" line whenever you say it.
Wheeljack is a character I really like. A mad scientist who is nonetheless peppy and pretty outgoing, I came to like him recently, particulary the G1 and Cyberverse iterations.
2:06 it is said that they mixed wheeljack with other character there. It wasnt suppose to be wheeljack lying there, but the animation team(i recall) mixed itbup and drew him there instead
Just recently, Wheeljack appeared in Transformers Earthspark being the mechanic who designed Optimus' drones, for which Twitch got her alt. mode. Moreover, in his debut episode, Twitch even considered him a father-like figure and learns a few tricks later in the episode through his training.
Armada Wheeljack presented a continuity issue in Hot Shot's backstory. Hot Shot was originally presented as not being a combat veteran, but suddenly, he now was.
Great video. But I have a question: How come there's no explanation for G1 Wheeljack's toy & original box art about the lack of eyes and his signature mouthplate effectively stretched into a visor in the same vein as G.I. Joe's Snake Eyes?
4:57 Considering what's going on with Rise of the Beast's Wheeljack, I wonder if it's the same situation, since in the Bumblebee movie, we see a bot who looks like classic Wheeljack, but then Rise of the Beast's Wheeljack has a different design....
Could we please get The Basics on Cliffjumper? He’s my favorite character. Dunno why. It might be because I first got his 2007 toy, and when I was really young my mom had a red Camaro. Still upset she sold Cliffjumper.
Maybe because G1 Cliff was paranoid about traitors and also tended to use insane heavy weaponry. There's a clip from the cartoon someone gag dubbed of him pulling a bazooka from behind a rock that meant he has _expected_ to run into Decepticons when his team arrived there. "CJ, where did you get that?" "None of your slagging business, Hound."
I've been binging this series the past few days. If I'm not mistaken, there are 8 1984 characters left. Sunstreaker, Bluestreak, Trailbreaker, Mirage, Windcharger, Huffer, Gears, Brawn, and the Cassettes Rumble, Frenzy, Laserbeak and Buzzsaw.
The last good one was 2011 and it was still a little wonky. The Combiner Wars version was... okay, at least if you painted the black parts on his robot mode. But yes, a good figure that transforms in an interesting way and has a decent robot mode has been a LONG time coming.
We’re not gonna talk about his Rise of the Beasts design. Cause it’s so repulsing that not even shockwave would want to consider him a logical opponent.
I think that the Wheeljack Ford Mustang featured on the Energon-O cereal and Binaltech/Alternators is one of the coolest design ever. Ninja Armada Wheeljack based on Sideswipe was super cool too.
Ironic thing about Wheeljack that he shares with Jazz and Mirage. The whole thing of "Robots In Disguise" is somewhat undermined when you have a variety of racing cars whose glory days were years behind them before even Diaclone, let alone Transformers. The most contemporary alt-mode was actually Ironhide, as his van mode was still being produced until 1988.
4:57 Why couldn't "Armada" Wheeljack have just been upgraded into "Energon" generation-1-Wheeljack-inspired body to solve the name problem? Ask Hasbro, not me.
I think Wheeljack's personality of being a mad scientist whose inventions didn't always work came from the fact his alt-mode, a Lancia, had a well-earned reputation of being innovative but the innovations didn't always work and was prone to breakdowns. In prime I believe wheel jack was an inventor before he joined the wreckers his interactions with ratchet definitely show that the two have history
What a timing! Just this morning I had an Amazon package delivered at my doorstep cotaining Exhaust - an decepticon repaint of Masterpeice Wheeljack.
Wheel jack from the Prime Series was my second favorite!!!👍👍👍
Thanks, between you and me G1 Wheeljack is my best fave!!👍👍😀
I've noticed that in Prime Wheeljack is usually really good at fighting against multiple opponents but struggles in one on one fights against exceptionally powerful enemies and for that reason I would say that if he were a lightsaber duellist he would be a form 1 Shii-Cho practitioner
Next to Prime, my favorite Autobot!
Wheeljack was my first G1 Autobot. He will always have a special place in my heart. I still have him too!
I really do hope Wheeljack makes an appearance in Siege.
Leoxandar Magnus What is Siege?
He is appearing in the next toyline after Siege, Earthrise
Wheeljack is a very special transformer for me. He’s my favorite Autobot and he kinda introduced me to rally racing as well (I’m a gearhead) since his alt mode is a Lancia Stratos rally car ❤️🛠️
2:54 his legs oh my god
The G1 comics were notorious for this. Can you please devour that continuity, Lord of Destruction?
@@OtakuUnitedStudio I've been planning on doing that for a few years
@@megathot3734 Thank goodness.
What's wrong?
It's time to Jack off
I remember really liking wheeljack when I watched transformers prime of a morning. I specifically remember in prime him throwing a ball of scrap, ratchet getting pissed, hitting agent foulers (I definitely spelt that wrong) door to his office. Also i remember him saying he thought bulkhead would catch it.
God it’s been so long.....
"The toy that would become Wheeljack was originally released as part of the Japanese--- **DIACLONE TOYLINE!!!!**"
Recurring information is delivered in such a uniform manner across all of your videos that I can't help but chant the "diaclone toyline" line whenever you say it.
"Diaclone Toyline" and "Bob Budianski" have become the opposite of trigger words to me, instead causing a soothing sense of safety.
@@StarkMaximum Honestly. And am is it just me who hums the beginning tune?
Definitely not no.
@@StarkMaximum "... was offlined by a Cosmically Powered Starscream (tm)."
DIA-CLOOOOONNNNNEEE.
Who doesn’t love Wheeljack? Everytime I see him I think of the classic Dr. Smoov parody “SOS Wheeljack”.
The basics on Starscream!
Wheeljack is my favorite g1 transformer and my favorite of all time
Prime wheeljack is best wheeljack, fight me
Wheel jacks vehicle form wasn't actually the group 4 rally stratos but a group 5 protoype version of the car
The only Wheeljack I like is Transformers Prime Wheeljack because he is awesome as a Wacker thank you for the video.
Wrecker dude 😂
@@daisymay6505 Wheeljack is probably a wacker when he's hard up too. We've all been there....
5 years has passed and we now have wheeljacks original g1 van figure :D
You should do the basics on reflector and the cone heads!
Here’s a theory:
Wheeljack didn’t die in the movie. His “corpse” was actually just him knocked out.
The lancia stratos that wheelack turns into isn't a rally car,it's a gr.5 car
I agree! Wheeljack's alternate mode is a Race car not a Rally car!
Wheeljack is a character I really like. A mad scientist who is nonetheless peppy and pretty outgoing, I came to like him recently, particulary the G1 and Cyberverse iterations.
Can you do one of starscream. Kinda wanna learn about when he truly led all transformers in the comics
Adding to the confusion downshift WAS wheeljack in the Japanese dub.
8:57 Spoiler Alert. I havent got to that part of the comics yet
2:06 it is said that they mixed wheeljack with other character there. It wasnt suppose to be wheeljack lying there, but the animation team(i recall) mixed itbup and drew him there instead
Do the basics on sidewipe or hot rod or cheetor or hot shot please
Just recently, Wheeljack appeared in Transformers Earthspark being the mechanic who designed Optimus' drones, for which Twitch got her alt. mode. Moreover, in his debut episode, Twitch even considered him a father-like figure and learns a few tricks later in the episode through his training.
Who's here after seeing ROTB's Wheel- err, Nerdjack?
Armada Wheeljack presented a continuity issue in Hot Shot's backstory. Hot Shot was originally presented as not being a combat veteran, but suddenly, he now was.
Great video. But I have a question:
How come there's no explanation for G1 Wheeljack's toy & original box art about the lack of eyes and his signature mouthplate effectively stretched into a visor in the same vein as G.I. Joe's Snake Eyes?
4:57
Considering what's going on with Rise of the Beast's Wheeljack, I wonder if it's the same situation, since in the Bumblebee movie, we see a bot who looks like classic Wheeljack, but then Rise of the Beast's Wheeljack has a different design....
Transformers Prime Wheeljack is my favorite version of him. He was badass and was definitely one of the toughest autobots in that show.
When they added him to the Fall of Cybertron multiplayer the car class was one of my mains.
We really need a proper Wheeljack figure
The last good one was 2011 and it was still a little wonky. The Combiner Wars version was... okay, at least if you painted the black parts on his robot mode. But yes, a good figure that transforms in an interesting way and has a decent robot mode has been a LONG time coming.
Earthrise
We’re not gonna talk about his Rise of the Beasts design. Cause it’s so repulsing that not even shockwave would want to consider him a logical opponent.
The creator of the Dinobots.
I think that the Wheeljack Ford Mustang featured on the Energon-O cereal and Binaltech/Alternators is one of the coolest design ever.
Ninja Armada Wheeljack based on Sideswipe was super cool too.
could you do the basics on Starscream also this video was all awesome keep it up
Ironic thing about Wheeljack that he shares with Jazz and Mirage. The whole thing of "Robots In Disguise" is somewhat undermined when you have a variety of racing cars whose glory days were years behind them before even Diaclone, let alone Transformers. The most contemporary alt-mode was actually Ironhide, as his van mode was still being produced until 1988.
Bro they ruined wheeljack in rise of the beasts
4:57 Why couldn't "Armada" Wheeljack have just been upgraded into "Energon" generation-1-Wheeljack-inspired body to solve the name problem? Ask Hasbro, not me.
