The tweeter is a piezo with a paper cone glued to it, they don't sound good. I had Kraco 140 Watt 2-Channel Power Amplifier - KA-5050, Box said it did 47 watts RMS. It was pushing a pair of 8 inch cerwin vega subs with Pioneer surface mount speakers on the dash in my old 71 duster I had in 93. Also had a Realistic shaft head unit and 7 band EQ. Fun car, Thanks for the flash back Big D
You should do a video of some old basic quality amp that's well used and change all the electrolytic caps on it and measure it before and after. I've heard some stories about vintage boomboxes where after a thorough cap replacement they're sounding absolutely amazing compared to the earlier stage.
@@dextermorgan1 No doubt. The Solen polypropylene and electrolyte capacitors in vintage Infinity cabinets were always out of spec. The "EMIT" tweeter would come alive after a recap.
I remember coming across these back in the day. To a young guy they had tempting looks and performance but that name kinda killed it . I couldn’t get caught popping the trunk and having a big red SUNKYONG in the middle of it.
I think a lot of the times, and this includes me, we forget just how old the parts inside these are......and how old the technology of those parts are as well! I'm just glad the little guy turned on more less got close to it's ratings. Also, think about the age of the equipment used in the development and construction of this amp! I would say this is a win for this amp!
They built stuff with safer tolerances back then because they weren't trying to squeeze fractions of a cent on the assembly line. I kind of figured with the same rating at 4ohm and 2ohm we weren't going to reach the stated output at 4ohm. Nice to see dynamic power exceeded the rating at 2ohm though. I bet you could get a nice char on a steak with that heat sink after an hour of listening though.
It’s great to see after all this time the amp is working! Efficiency though, dang. A little lack luster. Those are some very big magnets for small speakers! Retro is still cool! Thanks Big D!
Had one of those back in the day. Worked fine. Paired with a HiComp for the highs, and the Sunkyong for the bass, it was the bomb setup for a 16 year old! LOL
This was my first amp I had in high school! Mine had SKE branding, older ones were like the one in the video. Local shop sold and installed them, they were cheap entry level amps, think I paid $200 new in 1991. I had it pushing 2 Kicker 12’s and it did a good job. I think I ran it for about 2 years, later upgraded to a Coustic Powerlogic 460.
Had that exact amp on a Kicker box in like 1987-88. I forgot it even existed until I saw this video. I bought it new and I think all my friends ended up passing it around between them after I moved on to better stuff.
I seem to remember these amps being sold at the old Service Merchandise stores. I was tempted to buy one but ended up getting a used Pyramid amp from a buddy. I probably should have got the Sunkyong instead.
In sunkyong we trust! I had similar speakers in the early 90ies with which I built two small cabinets(powered by a Philips amp) to add some boom to my DoomII sessions.
Reminds me of my old 150 watt Jet amplifier. One of those obscure brands from way back. It sounded really clean though. Even though it looked like it may of been one of those J.C. Whitney specials. 😅
I had two of those. I used them to push two Cerwin Vega 12s in my Geo Metro. This was in 1989 I believe. Someone broke into my car and stole my stuff. They also got a Jensen 4 channel amp with a BBE circuit in it, and a 2 channel Kenwood amp. Bastards.
I wanted a Nacamichi deck for so long. Our local premier car audio dealer only sold the high end stuff like MQ , Diamond, Mac etc. I looked at that deck everyday. Never got it sad😢
The Sunkyong units use a piezo plate that is connected to what looks like a tweeter unit, they do that because the piezo unit makes so little sound by itself, so you often have to cheat like this.
Wait wait wait, where is the extra after credits stuff?? Let's do a 1 ohm or .5 ohm test lol. Fun to see car audio stuff from before I knew there was car audi stuff.
I have a pair of speakers from the back of my '85 RX7 with similar construction and large format paper cone tweeter. Not the greatest quality sound, but they will play up to 20Khz with amazing efficiency. People are coming back around to the concept of wideband speakers. I bet coating them with mod podge might help tone down the sharpness...then do some tuning and hook them up with a quality passive or active crossover. It's fun to play around with old stuff using new tech.
On the amp, if the power supply were mosfet instead of complimentary npn transistors, it might do decent numbers at 4 ohms, but it's still class AB, so.
One time I came acrossed brand new Boston acoustics still in the box 6.5 3way I picked four of them up for $100 for the two sets😅 and man that I cook those speakers so fast they sounded good for all the 30 minutes😂
My friends used to buy those SKE amps at Hight Tech Stereo, in Annapolis MD. The 120 was $50.oo they sounded ok, but he had to buy a new one like every 3 to 4 months. 😂🤣
with the low efficiency, did it result in running hot? or did the power just leak out onto the floor of your laboratory? might want to have a mop at the ready 🤣
The amp looks early pyramid.. . I almost remember k mart brand called kmc . . Its not fair testing 40 year old speakers. I JUST GOT A TXT.. YES KMC . KMART BRAND my local friend agrees.

Love seeing the oldies….the good ole days of car audio😊

No doubt that's true. We change the components on crossovers in home speakers all the time. It always sounds better after a recapping etc.
Love this and have been wanting to do it 👍

I always enjoy the old school stuff. Great video, Big D!!!

Amp and speakers definitely had that 90s sound! Cool video thanks for sharing.
I had a set of Sony speakers new in box of similar age. When I got them out to test them last year the foam surrounds just crumbled away.
Lol Of course they did. Those old foam surrounds aren't going to be any good anymore.
Yeah that sux. I do have some Sony’s I’m gonna show off tho
U can easily foam them. I re-formed a pair of old Optimus 15 house speakers years back...
😂😂😂😂😂 Foam surrounds wither fast.
I was looking at this amp. I'm glad you picked it up because I forgot to grab it!

I love seeing these old oddball components. Very cool!!!

My buddy had this exact amplifier in the 80s hooked up to a pair of 8in Pyle drivers..Kicked ass!..

Since the caps are old. It should've made more if they were in good condition right?

Thats a cool old amp!! and now I got that ice and fire tune stuck in my head lol
They would be nice for an old pickup truck that you wanted to have some tunes in. The highs seem a bit sharp but not that bad.
be interesting to look at the amp's signal on an o-scope

I appreciate a nice clean amp
I wanna see more video's about your beautiful car in the background 👍🤘

Those speakers look worse than early 80s Audiovox. Oof. Love the videos.
Wait wait wait, where is the extra after credits stuff?? Let's do a 1 ohm or .5 ohm test lol.
Fun to see car audio stuff from before I knew there was car audi stuff.
What a difference those Elac speakers make
I remember SKC VHS tapes when I was a kid. I never knew that they made electronics.
Same!
I had the 75x75 Pro Series Sunkyong one on each 12" terminators. It actually sounded awesome back in the early 90s
Where can you find the Orion blue book and other documents that give msrp pricing of old school audio ?
Thought that was an old skool Tempest amp, an old Alpine design...but then, SKE was very similar also...
Waiting for the new hyanka amp on the dyno 😎
My 1970 convertible Cadillac DeVille has a factory 8-track tape player in it how about that
I had some Spark-o-Matic speakers that looked just like those.
Hey Big D, have you ever done any BLADE amps from Canada? They were pretty good sounding high powered small footprint amps.
Hey, maybe you should do a giveaway of the speaker you dropped 😊
Straight jc Whitney
Des amplis fabriqués dans un garage… j’adore , c’était l’époque 😁
Foam is the worst surround material. And paper is the worst material for a tweeter. Those speakers sound awful !!!!
Great video as usual Big D !!

it's funny back then a copy was called a knock off now it's just called another brand
Facts!
Magtone mgt 200 please review if you can find one amazing durability and a classic.
Dang that was some massive coin back in the day, more than the $1 per watt average
One time I came acrossed brand new Boston acoustics still in the box 6.5 3way I picked four of them up for $100 for the two sets😅 and man that I cook those speakers so fast they sounded good for all the 30 minutes😂
Ive seen those speakers..either pyramid or sparkomatic.. late 80s.. early 90s..
Similar to the Alpine 35 series amps also
0:27 have you ever tested the Yamaha?
No don’t have one
My friends used to buy those SKE amps at Hight Tech Stereo, in Annapolis MD. The 120 was $50.oo they sounded ok, but he had to buy a new one like every 3 to 4 months. 😂🤣
also looks like a hi-comp from that era.
I'm still holding out for an old amp to surprise us.
Get that audio shed done then Show us!
watts were so expensive back in the day.
So what is scrap value of the heat sink?
beast
I had the SKE version. I thought I had a big amp! Lol
The first speakers sounded so bad you cut the amp off and then back on trying to reboot it lol
You know that works like 95% of the time 😝
I agree bro. Those speakers sound horrible 😂🤦🏾♂️
with the low efficiency, did it result in running hot? or did the power just leak out onto the floor of your laboratory? might want to have a mop at the ready 🤣
You are the Sylvester Stallone of car audio reviewer of all time
Since Sunkyong was also an oem manufacturer, I wonder if that’s a copycat or if they manufactured them for Yamaha.
I believe the Yamaha and Nak amps were made in Japan
Looks like a old. SKE amp. I have a few of them
Must’ve missed that part in the video 😬
The amp looks early pyramid.. . I almost remember k mart brand called kmc . . Its not fair testing 40 year old speakers. I JUST GOT A TXT.. YES KMC . KMART BRAND my local friend agrees.
Those speakers look like sparkomatics😂
looks more like an old Alpine
That power supply in that amplifier must be sad. 30% efficient, your in vacuum tube territory.
I I'm a professional producer and sound and we don't do respect that amp did not sound bad
I should have watched longer before commenting, I had the ske
Looks like a nice version of somebody's school project😂
NICE😂
Highway robbery 😂
Looks a lot like sparkomatic junk. That amp needs to be sunkyun in the ocean somewhere
👍👀👍
Sounds like 1986
😜
Damn!...I Love Extras....Service..............................And Thats Willison Audio EXTRAS Shit!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those sunkyong speakers were awful. 😬
Bus fuse... just saying lol
Garbage 😂😂😂
I can deliver the best and also the worst audio you’ve ever seen
I know, I love your content no one does it like you do 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
