Revisiting the Canon 1D mark IV in 2023

  • I've been getting out with this beast of a camera, the Canon 1D mark IV!
Although it's over a decade old, it's still a very capable camera today for any style of shooting. It sports two processors, a long lasting battery system, and a 16 megapixel APS-H sensor which sits right between full frame and crop sensor. I'd say it's worth checking out if you're in the market for a wildlife system on a realistic budget, or simply want to shoot with something different.
    Thanks for watching!

I remember attending a big-time golf tournament around 10 years ago in Tucson, AZ. It was a nasty cold day with intermittent rain. Several photographers were following the lead group. It had to be hard work because that was not an easy walking course. They had on rain gear. Their cameras sounded like machine guns. One of the photographers sat down in front of me inside the ropes while he was "gunning" shots. I asked him what camera he was using. "Canon 1D IV," he said quickly. I thought, "Wow, here is a guy working in these conditions. His camera has to be good. No doubt." I am guessing he took at least a thousand shots that day. His paycheck depended on that camera.

I have basically grown into photography with Canon starting with the Canon 40D, then 60D, I then moved to the 7D which I still own to this day, at that point I wanted to move into FF so I got the 6D, then I moved to 1DIII which was my favorite camera for a very long time. I found that the APS-H sensor had a wonderful character to it. I grew my lens collection while owning the 1DIII and picked up another 1DIII as a spare. When I started doing headshot photography part time I took the opportunity to buy a 5Ds R and 1DX. I still own the 1DX but recently got rid of the 5Ds to get the R6 and R7 as travel cameras since I no longer do studio headshots the 5Ds rarely got used since I was carrying the 1DX. Today I own a 1D, 1DIIn, 1DIII (gave my other one to my niece for Christmas a few years ago), 1DX, 1Ds, 1Ds II, 7D, R7, & R6. I've been thinking about picking up a 1DIV to have the last APS-H sensor camera that Canon made.

I bought mine new in 2009, and just last year I upgraded to the R5.
But I still use the old tank there from time to time.

    Thank you for the video.
I’m a hobbyist wildlife photographer since 2009 and this has been my dream camera since its availability. However, couldn’t buy it until 2021. Got it from B&H used department in Nov21 in good cosmetic condition with a shutter count of 42k. Paid 1k dollars for it without any regrets. I just love it for everything it is capable of. I saved for quality lenses and bought them. Now I can dream of capturing a sprinting Cheetah for its prey somewhere in Africa.
My ultimate combo for this camera is EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II + EF 2x. It produces a reach of 780mm at f5.6 which is very convenient for me to nail anything I want. Always use it on tripod or monopod. However, don’t need those tools when I pair it with EF 400mm f/5.6L and EF 70-200mm f/4L IS. Just wish it was little quieter while firing off those bursts.
Never plan to give it up for mirrorless as the latter suffers from EVF lag which is a big turnoff for capturing fast action.

What a cool setup with both of those lenses! I too once dreamed of owning the 1d4 but it was always out of my price range. It's such a good camera today both for capturing a fast moving cheetah, or more common in my part of the world, wolves in the winter!

Find it perfect for portraits, at 3200 ISO. Colors in raw files get a pastel look. Just need a moderate sharpen, nothing more. With adequate light, the low grain of the back plans melts with the first plan os of the picture. Feels like analogue photography, using Portra film. Also, long lasting batteries beat every competition - all day shooting. For action photos it is also very nice - took outstanding photos of bullfights.

Thank you for the informative video! I'm currently using a D300 and want to change to Canon (especially 1D mk IV) for several reasons. Honestly, as a hobbyist these old machines are the best for me. I don't have to spend a fortune on it, it works fine and reliable.

Love watching your videos, I currently use the 1DmkII and 1DmkIII for backyard birding with either the 300 f4 IS + tc or the 100-400 mk I lenses and if I ever find a super nice 1DmkIV I'll pick one up for the faster af, frame rate and the 16mp's. Eventually, I chose 1D4 as well~ the main reason is the price, It's cheap, I got mine around $440 USD in Taiwan, second I already have a work-horse FF camera which is sony a7IV, it's not necessary to get another FF camera, plus I really want a APS-H format to try those perspectives out, so I chose 1D4 over 1Dx, and I love my choices so far~

This is is a solid body. A transnational camera for those who may not have the finance to upgrade to a mirror less system. For me it’s a bridge between the later Canon bodies & the ones that came before & I had the ones prior to this body including the Canan/ Kodak DCS 520 which was huge but did the job. I use this body for sports & even for street work. Where the later is concerned this body is not exactly inconspicuous but I don’t care. It does the job & that’s what in essence it’s about. You can go for the flashier new bodies but this will do the job. I absolutely love the monochrome settings.

Still like how these kind of pro camera body feel in my hand, so I like to collect these massive camera both from Canon and Nikon despite it doesn't really make much sense when carry these around. Indeed I can get similar photo when using smaller camera without having to carry similar kind of weight but many time it doesn't feel the same.
The only thing I don't really like about Canon 1D/1Ds Mark III/IV or Nikon D2/D3 series is if I didn't use the camera for a long time and I left the battery in the camera they will somehow unable to charge without any light shown on the charger, basically bricked. I never encounter this kind of problem on lower class camera's batteries and it's frustrating because these batteries are expensive and hard to find.

I recently purchased a battery for my d3s from AliExpress. 22$ shipped to my doorstep!!! And the performance is quite good too. It's talking to the camera and the charger perfectly fine. I switched from Canon dSLR's to the Sony A7IV last year and regretted it so much, I sold the whole Sony kit and went back to dSLR's (1Dx Mark II). Feels great to hold a REAL camera in the hands. The Sony was too tiny. The edges sharp and uncomfortable to hold. My fingers could barely fit to push the lenses release button. It's all just too compact. But what really sealed its fate was the horrible Overheating issues. Very annoying. My 1Dx is a TANK and takes amazing pictures. And IMO, the older dSLR's have better sensors. I can't explain it. Like modern FILM, I feel like the new mirrorless cameras don't have good realistic images. Too plastic looking. They try to be too sharp and NO NOISE that the images look fake.
