    My point of view is a bit different. I think the fundamental difference is that the sim racer simulates the need for pilot safety. We're supposed to win races to buy a car that drives both better and faster, so that we maintain our safety at higher speed. In arcade games, safety doesn't matter, we're actually supposed to take more risks instead to increase the reward. The game itself opposes a resistance to us going faster. Cheating opponents, less controlable or more fragile cars, it has to establish rules that impose by all means a proportional risk/reward system that can go as high as one's player skills. There's no fine line to determine at which point of realism a game is simulating reality or not. How accurate must be the car, the options, the environment, the physics? We didn't wait for the current level of realism to talk about a sim racer genre. What those games really have to simulate is the importance of driving safely, just as in real racing situations. So everything must be done to immerge the player in this situation... realistic cars, physics, places, and sanctions for bad driving... are just options. Neither genre have to respect or disrespect the reality of driving physics. They need to organise a progression and punishments that support safe driving in one case, or risky driving in the other. In this regard, most recent so-called arcade racers are half-assed, as they eliminate the need for safety without organizing a real risk/reward system.

    In this case, a Sim/cade title would bridge the gap... "theoretically", Sim/cade titles usually fail to appeal to both audiences, they are not as flashy as arcade games, and not realistic enough to appeal to sim racers, their value comes as a stepping stone from arcade to sim, you could still learn breaking points and racing lines, without the need to be constantly fighting your car, most simcades have wheel support and cam be very fun for someone transitioning.

  • @mattx5499

    If you don't have a decent racing wheel playing simulator racing games with keyboard or gamepad is kind of pointless. For an arcade racer with holywood physics you can go with anything. I really like arcade racers, since I'm not a driver at all and I prefer movie-like action over realism.

Its not uncommon for me to jump on an arcader and win effortlessly without using nitro or the ridiculously unbelievable drift/powerslide simply because i understand braking points, acceleration, racing lines and apex point of entry/ exit. Arcaders are fun and less serious, theres nothing wrong with that, its enjoyment. Competitive sims arent always enjoyable, sometimes it feels like a chore, spending hrs on track alone just because you have to shave .200 off your time, thats not fun, that feels like a chore at times

      @angelserrano9049 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You absolutely hit it on the nail for me (with hardcore simulators)👍👍 I honestly prefer simcade physics, then arcade. I've tried pure sims but it's an absolute chore for me from the physics to the borefest track racing. After I get past the annoying hang of the physics, it absolutely does nothing for me. With simcades like Forza Horizon series, it's just so much more accessible, entertaining and emersive with the content of different race types, events, the open world environment, the traffic, the audio etc. All those aspects makes it feel so alive imo.

  • @ppnhzk
    @ppnhzk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What I do not like about arcade racers is that they base their physics on real-world physics but going into all kind of tweaks to make it 'more fun' and easier to drive and pick up. This means that it might become extremely inconsistent in terms of actual car behaviour. Like you can lose grip in an instant for no reason because you bump into a part of the physics which works like that just because.
    In contrast playing an actual, proper simulation means that you can expect the car to behave in a certain way. Even if you jump from rFactor 2 to Project Cars 2 or Assetto Corsa, you will have a very similar feeling after setting up your controls. In arcade games you have to learn each of them even though they are way more shallow. In simulation titles you will have a tougher time but you carry over your progress essentially. It is simply a different kind of fun and generally it is more for the more patient type.
    Also, Forza Motorsport barely qualifies as a sim, you can call it a sim-cade, though that is a half-assed term. Forza has way more content and much more focused on instant fun than any proper sim mentioned above. It is a decent middle-ground, even though it might feel lackluster for not having a strong style.

    Generally the less precision of input it requires, the less emergent chaos there is in a simulation, the more "arcade" it is.
    Its abstraction.
    Its making the basic instruments of control easier to utilize, so that more complex challanges can be regularly presented for the sake of spectacle.
    There is absolutely no reason you couldnt drive a corckscrew or loodeloop in an F1 game, or BeamNG, but that it is a lot easier to fail at it, to the point where consistently doing so for 20 turns, by 20 drivers, whilst jockeying for position with each other is unfeasable.
    So basically arcade games are roo simple to be worth playing on a traditional track, and aims are too difficult to succesfully race an arcade track.

  • @ccramit
    @ccramit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I like something like the F1 games from Codemasters. Enough sim elements in it that it requires a decent amount of skill and strategy to do well, but arcade enough to where one or two not so minor mistakes don't completely take away your chances of still coming back to win and the damage physics are a bit more forgiving.
    Also, I don't really like the driver communities of the ultra sim and ultra arcade games. Sim guys take things way too seriously and forget that they were an accident prone newb at one point. And the ultra arcade crowd don't seem to take online competitions seriously enough and will just plow through anyone or everyone if they know their race is over because they know they won't get banned from it.

    Sadly sim racers can’t have that open world goofiness you’re talking about. Forza horizon for example, that game is grade A trash solely because of the players and what it’s become. Dirty drivers, cheaters, the whole deal. When a sim crosses that line wanting to be an arcade game, players will treat the game accordingly thus ruining the game.

      @Totone56 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does, and to be fair, with all assists off and manual mode, it's way more fun. The "normal" mode is a bit boring in my humble opinion, smash the throttle on a very fast car, brake when a corner shows up, don't care.
      Without assists, more than half throttle will spin the wheels in thrid gear in some cars, and you have to really feel the brakes with the vibrating triggers to avoid locking up, being aware of the downforce depending on your speed, all that while managing gearing.
      The physics are toned down in this game, but the underlying physics engine is actually excellent. You can even see the wings of cars bending with the aerodynamic simulation (It's the engine they based Flight Simulator on from hat i've read).
      It's still a bit simplistic compared to a real sim, but it's way more engaging and enjoyable, even on a gamepad.

In some ways it's a good thing (i.e. when racing online, etiquette must be maintained, no ramming etc.) but in other ways it's a really bad thing because a vocal minority of these people are so immersed in sim racing, they automatically equate arcade racing games as shit games. This kinda sim racing fanboyism turns off new players and i think that's mainly a reason why sim racing is a niche even today, even with some sim racing games having better and more lifelike graphics and sounds than 99% of all the other games on the market, genre no bar.

    Typically arcade games have a more numerous set of skill ceilings to be explored per game on avg. Take Quakeworld for example and how much stuff there is there to master. Reality should be seen as chains in a design space. Chains we can relate to, but chains nonetheless. Typically mechanical ability is a very boring skill to pedestalize. And the tryhards put wayyyyy too much emphasis on it. Decision making ability SHOULD be pedestalized more. Dota 2 is fun to watch, and tactical decisions matter so much more to an analysis of depth.

    • @timeingram2890
      @timeingram2890 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing competition is a status game. All men are in a competition with each other whether they know this or not. A thing that more closely mimics reality rewards more status based on that fact alone. Therefore reality-based games are often created BASED on this status reward and typically draws the attention of those not wanting to be called a gamer, but wanting to be seen as a wrecker of men. Unbeknownst to the architects. That's why arcade games aren't as competition heavy.

    I don't own Forza Horizon 3. But it looked really cool with the hot wheels tracks.
    And I hope thers comes more arkade like tracks in the future in simulation games. Whether they have loops, surreal environments or both.
    I think wreckfeast has some really interesting tracks. Especially the rainbow road from Nintendo 64. But I don't know how fun that whas to drive on since I don't own the game. And it looked really chaotic. Hehe.
    ________Next comment____________
    Thers two things I whant to see in a simulation game. First a game mode where all the cars are half the scale so they drive like giant radiocars. And the track becomes bigger for them. And all physic change. I guess its more like go cart then. The idea is to make the cars easier to drive and track bigger. A bit like arcade. But still have that simulation feel.
    And the other mode is to have unlimited cars in a race. Would be much caos. Maybe 50-100 cars in one race. Just for fun. (edit: I come to think thers actually a nascar multiplayer game that has this. Dont remember the name. And thers probably more of them. Really cool.)
    Thats my thoughts.
    ----------------------- End? ------------------------
    And finnaly trackmania needs a game mode where the cars can pull each other. Not so much that they spinn out. But at least you can crash in them block them or race more like a normal race.
    I would like both modes I think.
    They have this a bit in Track mania Turbo: Single screen mode.

    I'm thinking about what racing game I could make\want to play, it'd be the most balls to the wall thing I can come up with, like, Burnout: Blood Dragon or something, I'd like to have a driving physics that is unrealistic to give power to the player, with the left stick when air born you could perform tricks to built momentum and stuff, the tires stick to the track really well but you can engage drift mode and start skidding around even in straight lines a the cost of a mumentum based systems where you risk losing controll at any moment if your not careful, the most basic damage model possible, a health bar and explosions, you could use your health as nitro like in F-Zero, slip stream would have a slingshot effect giving you lost of momentum but makinh your own slip stream much stronger and stuff, I'd like it to be easy to pick up and then hard to master with skill based tracks and multiplayer.

Arcade games have better looking tracks which are more fun to look at and experience...but the cartoony driving..your mustang can beat my Bugatti on a straight...you can never lose the cops no matter how well you drive...cause they have three times the speed and capability...and nitros...I hate nitros...fire shooting out the exhaust...and having to drift around every corner...and its considered a turn. Arcade racers are not for competitive gamers. Need 4 speed has been out for a long time...and it was fun in the early days...then they changed the platform to the dueschy story modes...ricer cars and drifting...goodbye nfs….now...there is only gt sport....and eventually it will bore me o death.
