- Super Mario Odyssey was a massive success for Nintendo. So like Breath of the Wild, Pokemon, and pretty much every other successful game for the Switch we all expected a sequel or DLC... but we still haven't gotten it. In this video I examine the real reasons Odyssey 2 never happened... and never will.

The only reason we got Galaxy 2 is because the team had so many more ideas they couldn’t fit into the first game, so they made a sequel

well, most of the stuff in galaxy 2 was meant to just be DLC. It wasn’t actually supposed to be in the base game of galaxy 1 , but but in the end they still made had to make a new game

With every Nintendo Direct that passes, my hope for Odyssey 2 dwindles more and more
Same, Odyssey is my favorite Mario game of all time. I loved Wonder but the sandbox Mario's hold so much nostalgia for me. I wish Mario Odyssey had patched button controls so we didn't have those stupid waggle shakes. I think the Bowsers add on on u port was a test of open world (ish) Mario and it was great. So I think you are right that Odyssey 2 is dead sadly but I expect and open world Mario sandbox game would be amazing!
Here's the thing Super Mario Galaxy 2 was never originally intended to be a full game, just DLC.
However it soon became clear the game was too big, and it kinda seems like they must've had unfinished business with Galaxy as there's so much new content in the game.
I still havent got over sm64 never getting a sequel.
I have. 1-63 was PLENTY. It was definitely time to switch it up with Sunshine.

A 3D Mario that is a love letter to both 2D and 3D Mario with a New Gameplay gimmick similar to Cappy but with added Power Ups,more enemy variants,More new costumes,new worlds to explore,sidequests,and open world 3D Platformering in the vibe of Bowsers Fury meets Super Mario Wonder meets Mario Odyssey.

I legitimately think Bowser's fury began life as epilogue DLC for Odyssey, explaining where Jr was and how Bowser got back to earth (By crashing his ship). The cats would have been captures that let you play like the cat suit and the whole kingdom itself works like a sequel campaign. The reuse of assets and animations make me feel like this was Odyssey DLC that they kept and ended up putting it in 3D world and making different changes to it as a result

Besides from the topic of this video, I just want to take a moment to appereciate the making of it!
The Music, the footage, the really Well made arguments and explainations for everything. This just elevated the bit of sadness I felt at the end. Because at the start, I still had hope for a sequel to Odyssey. But looking at everything laid out at the end, I really picture this game releasing anymore. If, as stated, Nintendo doesn't do anything dumb, that is.
Instead, I am now very excited for whatever new there is to come for 3D Mario

Nintendo doesn’t do sequels on separate consoles. If we were going to get an Odyssey 2, it’d be a Switch release, not a Switch 2 release

As much as I’d love to think Nintendo’s playing the long game with Odyssey 2, they’ll likely launch the next console with a completely different 3D Mario instead of using the Odyssey mechanics instead. It still raises the question of why Nintendo abandoned every new concept introduced in Odyssey barring Pauline and the regional coins though. Seriously, I’m gonna miss Cappy and his entire kingdom if he winds up not coming back.
Another thing I’d like to bring up is a leak from November 2019 that seemingly nobody brings up anymore. There was a survey given out to select gamers about how they’d feel about certain concepts to be introduced in Sonic Frontiers (at the time untitled) and an Odyssey sequel. All of the concepts in the Frontiers part of the survey made it into that respective game. However, nothing of the Odyssey sequel has come since. It’s possible that the Odyssey things were thrown in as a sort of trap to catch someone if they were to leak the survey, but considering that the survey was given out by a third party and not Sega or Nintendo, it’d be weird to think that one game was real and the other wasn’t. Hoping that these concepts will see the light of day eventually, potentially as the Switch’s swan song! Would love to know what you think.

Little anecdote here: one time (before Wonder was announced) I was at the store in the switch section. Someone the worker to get her “Mario” and the worker asked which one. She just said “normal Mario” and had a hard time figuring it out. Maker? NSMBU? 3D World? Now Wonder is probably the definitive answer.
Lol my guess is it's NSMBU since the formula has stayed the same across most 2D games and is the most recognizable to the general public.
That’s what paper Mario was a somewhat open world with chapters that you can go to but it was open in the sense that you could go from one place to the other and everything was connected through Toad Town and being 3d it was linear but interconnected and open
a mario opened World is not good Like what you going to do. Jumping on enemies to collect XP To level ap your jump power. It just going to be confusing.

Nintendo probably wanted Mario Odssey to sell even more than BOTW. But decided against it when BOTW surpassed it.
I wanted to get a switch mostly for Mario odyssey since the console came out and it’s the top of my most plays games on my switch
They could port odyssey to the next console and call it super Mario odyssey deluxe with new kingdoms to explore

I might as well say some things. So bowsers Fury is kinda like a experimental open world game kinda like super Mario 3D land. And Kirby did had a small 3D title on the 3Ds called Kirby blowout blast that test what a 3D Kirby game could be like later on the Nintendo switch Kirby got a massive big 3D game called Kirby and the forgotten land. And Samus also has a 3Ds title called Metroid Samus returns, then on the switch she has a new game that expands called Metroid Dread. And as for super Mario bros wonder there was actually no deadline they could take their precious time with the game and it’s very detailed in every single game and probably the true sequel to the New super Mario bros DS with the many ideas everyone in the Nintendo crew and write a idea of what could be in the game on a sticky note and stick it on a wall even the sound designers, artists designers and other people and put in a idea. The reason 2D Mario games sells so well it’s because it’s more simple and you can play with your friends and the 3D Mario games are much more complex and hard to take in and usually only 2 players except super Mario 3D world but super Mario bros wonder fix that problem it’s simple to understand but also expands on what New super Mario bros DS did like the wonder flowers with changes the level completely and lots of secrets and very nice new style and pretty good game. And that’s my information I need to tell you I hope it helps.

Nintendo never liked to make direct sequels, Galaxy 2 is the only exception with Mario because they had way too many ideas that couldnt fit in the first one.

Nintendo isn’t always for profit, while their marketing department(which probably don’t interfere much) might be, they also have the development department
I believe the game might be cancelled before release, if Nintendo was to make Odyssey 2, their concept might just be a expansive open hub world like bowser’s fury, at the middle of the development, maybe they just focus too much on the open hub world but not the capture or kingdoms(the only reason why it is considered a sequel), they thought of a place between a grassland, a snow world and a desert, likely a revisit to Odyssey’s kingdom. There weren’t enemies to capture beside maybe bullet bill planned for the hard blocks. They decided to port the game to 3D world(seeing the state of the prototype) nstead and retooled the hub world to be lake lapcat.
I believe it might just not be the time for a switch 2, a sequel with more power just is not Nintendo enough and they don’t want to take the risk or go with the PS5 route, I can see them gradually ‘phasing out’ the switch hardware. They felt most of the player base don’t care for a complete new console, with the diehard wanting more power and the casuals wanting new games. They are first announcing games planned for the new console on switch(like wonder or peach’s showtime), then announcing some new accessories for the switch to allows new gameplay stuff. Finally offering a pro version for the core players.

We don’t know that yet. If anything they probably have the game finish right now and there’s just a bunch of physical copies in a room/warehouse at Nintendo just waiting to be announced, advertised, then ship. These things happen.
