WILD CLAWHAMMER BANJO TECHNIQUE! California Roll Banjo Lesson - Steve Baughman

  • Demonstration of the California Roll on clawhammer banjo that I teach on the ZEN BANJO DVD. This is a pretty advanced technique and it is best to be really comfy in your claw hand and rhythm before trying to learn this. Also, the California Roll is so much fun that it is hard to not grossly overdo it (like I do in the intro clip :-). Try not to do that.
    Enjoy!
I use a Fred Kelly fingerpick on my first finger when I play the banjo (usually) but it is not necessary for the California Roll. I have it on here in the opening bit of June Apple, but not for the rest of the video. So a fingerpick is not necessary.

Great lesson. I’m fascinated by the variety of up-stroke techniques folks will sprinkle in. This was a nice breakdown.

Wow! Crazy innovation for sure. You taught me to play clawhammer banjo on your "power of the claw" guitar dvd years ago. Can´t wait to incorporate this California roll into some tunes. Thanks much Steve!

Interesting. You learned banjo from the guitar DVD? I have actually told people that was possible, but you're the first I've heard who did it. Thanks for the comment.

@@friendlybanjoatheist5464 I also learnt clawhammer first as a guitarist, from the Power of the Claw DVD. It was my first introduction to clawhammer.
I enjoyed the technique so much that I eventually decided I had to buy a banjo (I now own 5😄) to carry the exploration of this amazing playing method.
I absolutely love playing clawhammer guitar and banjo and it all started with that excellent DVD.
      So that you Steve!!🙏🤝

I play an uppicking style of claw hammer, and I worked something similar to this into my repertoire. Except, my version uses all upstrokes with the middle.
Middle is my main striking finger.
I also like using my index on occasion to do a reverse drop thumb thingy. I pick the 2nd string and drop to the 1st string with my middle.

I have just got back into playing my banjo after a 10 year break. All my strings are perfectly in tune but when I play the 1st string on the 5th fret it is higher than G. Does anyone know why this would be?

    • @zenbanjo2533
      @zenbanjo2533 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

It could be an old string, one that is no longer true, or it could be that the neck has been a little bit.

Les Claypool's technique is what influenced me in discovering this technique. What was yours?
I am from California (Bay Area)
I have been working on this technique for a couple weeks......I found this vid tonight.
Guess us Bay Area have a similar mindset.

Ben Peoples Hi Ben. Wild! I have found nobody else using this technique. Can it really by two Bay Area dudes who discovered it? I am not aware of Claypool doing clawhammer banjo. Did he do some technique like this? Can you tell me where? I would love to check it out. Also tell me more about how you do the pattern and how you discovered it? Eager to hear more. Thanks for being in touch. (Where u live? Me in SF and Larkspur.)

your video helped me finally break it down (Thank you!), I can get smoother with it now.
Ive been playing bass longer and do my best to imitate Claypool (for fun) and thought, why not try something like it on banjo. Ive also tried double thumbing, as in up/down with the thumb - in a Claypool fashion.
I just purchased 'Zen Banjo'; I am so very excited. It Combines two of my favorite practices. Im getting started on it right away! Thank you for creating this

I took that as an intentional to imply getting mixed up though I did wonder haha.
I'm having a blast of a time with this banjo after playing a little classical guitar a while back so I I'm glad to have found this early on & will not feel bad about my up picking.

I am at zenbanjo@gmail.com if you’d like to pursue this. I’m really interested in how other people have happened upon the California roll and what they have done with it.

Hobo. thanks for this. Yes, Ralph is doing an UPpick with his first finger. Very cool. That is not uncommon clawhammer players, but it is not quite the California Roll because he is not doing the triplet thing.
If you hear it somewhere else, please let me know. The search goes on! And thanks so much for sharing this.
