- Wish you could play those haunting mountain modal banjo tunes on acoustic guitar and sound very similar to the real thing?
Well, you can. Al Petteway slows it down and shows you how it's done in this short lesson!

such timeless lessons some of the best RIP Al
RIP Al- you were a tough one❤
Great lesson. I play less 5-string banjo anymore but want to get something on six-string guitar, Thanks!
since 100 yr ago guitar players were trying to emulate the playing of piano, Francisco Tarrega transcribed parts of classical piano pieces to classical guitar, Charlie Christian playing solos guitar improvisation like saxo.and Merle Travis emulating the guitar like banjo
I have a Fairbanks Senator Banjo, circa 1902...that sure looks like yours. This is such a logical cross over between instruments. Im inspired ,Man!!!🎵🎶🎵
My wife tried learning the Banjo, then traded it in for a Mandolin. She then took the mandolin & traded it in for a Martin 12-string guitar. Well - the Martin guitar has been sitting in the closet ever since. I'm now afraid she'll trade me in.
3 Card Monty ... Uke? :)
You better make sure you're easy to play.
Sounds like she has a desire to play ,but is getting frustrated
I’d get her an electric guitar so she can at least play with effects ,distortion and stuff and have fun on the way to learning
I would think that would keep her interested
long enough to be able to actually play something
Every marriage has strings attached.
Don’t learn on a 12 string that is pure masochism
It hasnt been a time I was away from my guitar but now im without my guitar for two days and it makes me wanna go home now to play it
Great lesson...
This is pure genius. I have to try this now. Thanks a lot Al!
Great stuff Al ! A book or ebook or more vids of these Old Time Mountain tunes in this style with Tabs would be a god send! Cheers again Al...Charlie
This is just what I was looking for. It is a kind of work around, which is pure guitar, love it!
Very glad to hear!
Al you just pulled me out if the deepest playing rut I have ever been in! I can't wait to try this lesson out. THANK YOU. BTW...bum ditty needs to be on a t shirt.
Great idea! lol
This sound on acoustic is why I want to learn. I started a year and a half back, but my flow is nearly non-existent. I had played a couple of wind instruments as a kid in school band, but got away from music until I was 50 years old.
This video is inspiring. I feel like if I slow it down some things will start coming together. Thank you!
Wonderfully complete tutorial. Always enjoy fresh DADGAD ideas. Simple mountain melodies played authentically. Beautiful playing and sharing if ideas.
Many thanks!
Thank a lot for this great lesson ! So beautiful !
Cheers from france

An enlightening lesson. Thanks Al.
Brilliant tutorial - I’m reaching for my guitar! Many thanks for sharing your expertise.
Have fun!
I Have studied with Mr. Petteway about years using acoustic master class series ..hugs from Brasil
This is terrific. I have used the Carter scratch in every conceivable variation: standard, two finger down up. etc. This frailing falls into my right pattern perfectly. Thanks a million.
This is incredibly useful. Thanks so much.
Great! Stay tuned - we're shooting more lessons with Al that will be on our channel soon!
Very cool tuning Al! And the rhythm of your tune is great also.
Keep up with your videos. They are really enjoyable and teach a lot!
I like this guy. And he has redonkuloidal right had skittles®. ..................left hand ones too.
I've been listening to acoustic music all my life (very long time) and your sound is at the top.... incredibly beautiful!!
Clawhammer makes everything better.
Such a treat to see REAL info from an experienced professional on youtube. Not some kid in his bedroom showing off his equipment. This blew me away. Cant wait to try this.
Always amazing mr.Petteway!
Great demo. I’ve been playing clawhammer banjo for years but it never occurred to me that I might be able to translate the bum ditty to guitar. Can’t wait to try this out. Thanks for sharing it!
That's just amazing!! Thank you.

Thank you! This was really insightful to me, several light bulbs clicked!!
brilliant
Love it
Super neat! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for watching!
More of this! One of these days you should try this with a 12 string in open tuning capo'd 5th fret and up. That makes for some cool mandolin/mandola sounding stuff the higher up you go on the neck.
Love this lesson Al. It has opened up so many possibilities for me.
Thank you!
Wonderful! So glad you enjoyed it.
Wow! Great lesson!!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Maestro
So wish I had seen this back then in 2018.
Thank You sooo much Al for sharing your knowledge on this, alway's been looking for these Appalachian sounds and having a go at them and this one is exceptional to me..
Your natural easy and laid back tutoring style is both stimulating and inspirational, creme-de-la-creme here on YT.
Just Def subbed, can't understand why your Sub numbers are not up in the stratosphere?
Great Stuff. All the best .
Rollo.
Glad it was helpful!
NOBODY COULD AFFORD YOU MY FRIEND !
Thx for the Video! Could you also explain the left Hand ? That would be great ! :)
Incredible and motivating lesson, Al, thank you! I missed coming into Dream Guitars last time I was in Asheville, I hope things are starting to loosen up a bit post-Covid. Is that a Preston Thompson OM? Can't quite make out the cursive writing on the headstock...
..hi .... great music and beautiful sounds .... is it possible to have a basic tab ?? thanks...
Here's a related, but slightly off topic hint-- with a guitar, in standard tuning and capo'd at the fifth fret, if you play only the first four strings (D,G,B,E), it's the same as a ukelele.
would like to heard that on dobro
I think traditionally this called stroke style and is also done on banjo
Thanks Al. I quit guitar....but guess I'm back at it again....with DADGAD and claw hammer.
Anybody know what guitar this is? Cool lesson!
KNOPFLER guys
PRO...
Yee-haw!
Great vid.
Now, old joke warning. What's the difference between a banjo and an onion?......... Nobody cries when you cut up a banjo.
(Well someone out there may not've heard it).
Q: Why do they name bluegrass songs?
A: So you can tell 'em apart.
Why to 6 people don't like this video ? This is awesome technical guitar banjo
jelousy...
Where are you originally from, before you moved to the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina?
haha so osom!!
what model martin is that chief?
Try tuning a 6 string guitarjo (banjo guitar) in DADGAD!!...
Need to listen to these melodies... what song are you playing??
"Craggy Pinnacle" by Al Petteway, on his cd Mountain Guitar!
I've been trying to figure out how to get that sound on guitar for a long time, thanks!
Me too! Thanks to you, I've found it. I have a banjitar that's been idle for 3 years because I couldn't get the right sound to come out. I will apply this technique toute suite.

yee ha, great..
Can't really tell what's going on with the left hand could I get some tabs for this song?
Sorry Stephen, we don't have the tabs for this.
How can i buy your dvd - Appalachian Fingerstyle Guitar in DADGAD Tuning.
nevermind, found it on homespun videos
Anyone know what song this is?
The song especially on acoustic sounds like a certain Tyler Childers song that I can't remember. Amazing playing though
I know what song you are thinking of, its on Country Squire.
Gene Parmesan
the true element of surprise
your channel name is appropriate
Thanks!
Is this in DADGAD tuning?
Yes, DADGAD tuning, capo on 5th Fret.
@@DreamGuitars Thank you. I would have fumbled along until I found it. Again thanks.
i though Baughman's style was cool, but i might like this version with the strum beat better
I clicked because I thought this was going to be Gene Parmesan video
Al is God.
Will he answer our prayers?
Don’t think so.God plays guitar to blast Al out of the Universe,
try High Strung Guitar dadgad tuning lol
lesson guitar playing like a bango
I watched a bloke put a balloon in the sound hole, inflated it and got a closer banjo sound..
