I don't care how many strings are involved. this sounds not only "Irish" but artistically presented by a skilled player. This method is great for having both the melody & percussive elements combined from one solo player.
Thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated. I’m working on the piece again now. I forgot how to play it and I’m going to revive it for some upcoming gigs. 😂
Many banjos have acrylic heads which sound harsh, but if you switch to a fiber one that looks like lambskin, it helps to mellow the tone. Also notice his bridge has a big wide "foot" or feet on it. Irish tenor banjos (which this isn't, cause it has 5 strings) often have both features & sound "thunkier" & more mellow than typical banjos.
I've been playing guitar on-and-off since I was about 12 and this and your clawhammer guitar videos have inspired me to finally start learning more than just strumming chords. Would love to see you perform live some day.
I pressed "Subscribe" in the first 20 seconds of this video. This is a fantastic video to start the day with! ❤ Such an amazing musicianship, skill and tone. Thanks for the beautiful song!
Beautiful. You make it seem so simple but clearly many, many hours of practise. I really don't care if this is a Clawhammer tune or not, music is music and when it is played like this it is a joy to hear!
That's incredible, thanks for the tip! Now to see if I can get my arthritic fingers to do it. It mimics that chop that fiddle players do. Nollaig Casey does that in many of her songs on the "Lead the Knave" album.
I recognize you from the Foghorn Stringband's performance of Reuben's Train at the Floyd Country Store where your exuberant and fearless dancing stole the show. This is also wonderful, and I hope that you are able to get your music to the widest audience possible. I do believe that it would make something of a difference in the world.
Glen Stewart Yes. Groove is everything. If you lose the Groove, you lose the music. It’s so easy on banjo music, especially when you play melodic style, to concentrate only on the notes to the exclusion of the groove. One of my pet peeve‘s with Banjo playing. Thank you for stopping by.
Banjos make people happy. So does Irish Trad(itiopnal) music. So why not combine them? What a fantastic idea and so well done. Thank you! (Gotta love those "tiddiedees". Heheheh)
Hi Thomas, are you related to Sam Whaley of Griffin Georgia? I have a couple of his mandolins. Great builder. Got them when I was on tour down there. His daughter, Jessica, just finished grad school at Berklee in violin. You related? (Thanks for liking my video, assuming you weren't being sarcastic.)
Zen Banjo not related to my knowledge, but those apples don't sound too far from the tree. I wasn't being sarcastic either, probably seen this 1000 times lol. I need that index finger pick...
THanks. I appreciate your kind thoughts. I use the WHITE pick from Fred Kelly. I just google Fred Kelly picks and call. Sometimes Fred answers. Tell them you want the whilt pick that Steve Baughman uses. I can't recall what it is called. see you down the road, I hope
Beautiful stuff Steve.✨️ I’ve been playing both Celtic music and clawhammer/drop-thumb old time banjo for decades and don’t often run across much that really impresses or inspires me any more. The fact that this did both is noteworthy and much appreciated. A QUICK QUESTION if you don’t mind. (Apologies if it was already asked and answered earlier.) I worked this out in double C which was a breeze but it’s the wrong key which capoing won’t even fix. You play it in it’s correct key of G here and I’m simply wondering how your banjo’s tuned. Thanks.
Thanks for your kind words. Much appreciated. The tuning is double C. I am actually playing it in the key of C. I arranged this for solo banjo, so whatever key works best is what I use. Playing this along with another instrument would not sound good, to me anyway. Does that make sense? thanks again for your interest. I still love playing this piece.
@zenbanjo2533 Gotcha.✔️That makes perfect sense. Morgan Megan is one of those timeless & exquisitely beautiful tunes that I never tire of either. Thanks so much for inspiring me to learn it on banjo with your cool CR triplets and for your speedy & responsive reply. All the best! ☯️☮️, DK
I play 3 finger style but I’ve been broadening my skill to clawhammer recently especially since my band is exploring new avenues of music seems to be the current trend I got over 15 years of experience playing Banjo is a dying art most people want to play rock or some from of pop but with hipsters and the new grass movements I see a interest in the skill I never thought I could teach but I find myself giving back to the community and finding people interested in playing an instrument that isn’t even thought of in todays society
Great points. Thank you for being in touch. I think you are correct about the community, and anybody who really hangs out in the music communities in the south knows that banjo is very very very far from being a dying art. Thanks for sharing your passion.
