@A.E.W How convenient ! So I guess he didn't commit incest either, although he impregnated his own mother ? However, you would have a hard time trying to convince me he didn't break the sixth commandment - how many lives did the deluge take already ? But that gets a free pass too I guess. Seems like god is just another one of those "do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do" short-fused tyrants. Yikes.
tedgrant2 Good start, but the key question is: Which does she prefer - Sheep or Goats? “The merest accident of microgeography had meant that the first man to hear the voice of The Great God Om, and who gave Om his view of humans, was a shepherd and not a goatherd. They have quite different ways of looking at the world, and the whole of history might have been different. For sheep are stupid, and have to be driven. But goats are intelligent, and need to be led.” ― Terry Pratchett, Small Gods.
@Jazzkeyboardist1 Hitchens himself would have rejected any kind of blind admiration. He may have been an alcoholic, cynic fightpicker. But he was one of the few who actually stood up against the stupidity that is spread by religious people. I don't. I just ignore them. He wanted to counter their blabla with something worth using breath for. And for the "offending" part - I get that people have a right to have their religious feelings but they should cry privately about them if actual sense collides with it.
Firstly, of course: the world would be a better place if Mr. Hitching' s great intellect and blazing wit still went forth to provoke and inspire our thoughts. A fairly sensible assessment of the commandments would be that numbers 3 through 9 represent a sort of rough sketch for positive social behaviour, particularly in a tribal society. 1 and 2 serve no useful purpose except to "justify" obeying the other 8... And #10 creates a concept later clarified by Mr. Orwell: the notion of "Thoughtcrime". Thanks again, Hitch!
