    Firestarter pipe always go under the logs/log support (grate). Otherwise, your logs will eventually damage the pipe.

      Wood-burning units are meant to hold wood, while gas-fueled units are meant to host gas. Mixing fuel types could lead to fire hazards, smoke back-up, and a lot of damage to your home/unit.

      @@Group_Anonymous What Matt has is a gas starter. Put your wood on the grate, open flue, turn on the gas, light the gas, wait until wood is burning, then turn off the gas. The gas valve should be outside of the firebox.

    Yeah the burner needs to be protected by the grate, plus the holes need to be pointed more downward to keep ash and debris from going into the pipe. Also make sure to test the burner and adjust that air mixture so that flame is nice blue. (Little metal flap on top of that end piece that has a screen in it)

      @@Group_Anonymous it's propane and is only being used to start the wood that will be placed on the Rack. The burner should be under the grate so it doesnt get damaged by the wood and the holes places so the ash doesn't clog up the holes in the burner.

    My late father found your channel in the last couple years of his life, he passed away a year ago but just wanted to say thanks for providing this content. He watched your channels everyday and even supported you by ordering merch. In his late years he wanted nothing more than to be out there in the yard working on cars, driving them and running a tractor. You gave him that outlet to go to when all of our family had to shut him down. Thank you.

    I have a feeling the burner is not supposed to be between the logs. The heat + weight of the logs might melt and deform the burner which sounds dangerous.

    One of the things I love about Mere is that she pitches to help with small/major projects, like making improvements to the goat shed or overhauling the abandon mansion. She doesn't let anything phase her, even crappy weather. She reminds so about how my parents worked together as a team that built three family homes and a cottage and fixed up a 37 foot ocean going sailboat so that they could sail off into the Caribbean. They were incredible.

    Matt and Mere I have Leukemia and I'm in isolation unit recieving chemo, I just wanted to say the biggest of cheer to you two for these videos. Seriously only days when you upload I watch in the morning so your happy up beat spirits and devotion to family and better ones self can set the mood for a good day you me. Thank you, you raise my spirits up during these tough times. I have a video on my page of my journey through leukemia to try get awareness out there for this dreaded disease, I know Matt that your brother had cancer too and I now realise how much he and you all as a family must have gone through, but you stayed positive through the journey as difficult as it can be and supported his wife and kids after, big ups to y'all for that.     Hey Matt, you need the gas outlet to be under the grate. Logs will squish and warp the tube under heat.

    Doing short sprints helps a ton. I ran track and my mile time was a 5:10. Sprinting helps you get the finish faster and also builds tolerance to the pain and lactic acid and all that

      Sprinting will help some but imo anything over 800m requires you to practice pacing. I would focus on 5k runs as often as you can. Average out the mile time, just under 7min pace would be great for your goal. It will help you see how much further you can push yourself towards your goal when you do just 1 mile.

      Hinges would only be viable if the the roof was FINISHED (shingle or tin topped). Being just plain plywood...screws you can remove is best, as it will keep the plywood from warping (somewhat) when rained on. As I think this is only temporary housing...go with what you got, and do the permanent structure right.

    And in the next episode Matt welds extensions onto the legs of the fire grate to clear over the igniter haha. In all actuality I'm pretty sure you can just find some hollow square tubing that will perfectly fit over the legs that you cut and then you can just cut them to desired length and slide them on and give them a couple quick tacks with the welder and a little high heat paint to match and your good to go man because you definitely 100% want the igniter under the grate.

    I lost my dad when i was in the second grade and didnt get to really do all the things a father and son should do but watching you with linc makes me feel like i get so see what i might have been able to do with my own pops and its the best feeling your such great roll model for him and for other guys like me who never really got that male roll model in there life

      I lost my dad to cancer when I was 22. He would work every hour they would give him. I didn’t get to know him until after I was 18. At that time, I didn’t feel that needed a dad, until he was diagnosed with cancer. Make sure no days go by that you don’t tell your family that you love them. I also lost mom 5 years later to murder. Teach, play, pray and protect them.

    Matt buy the right log rack for the fireplace. There’s a reason the gas defuser is under the rack. Don’t mess with gas brother

    the grate is supposed to go under the firewood. if not the burner can/will get destroyed by the heat and the firewood. small bits of ash can also get into the burner, so it need to be over the burner.

    weld two pieces of angle iron so the burner is under the logs. Otherwise you will risk breaking the burner off and create all kinds of problems.

    Matt, another thing that you could do is that when the weather gets nasty like it does when it's Raining, get a Water proof Canvas Tarp to cover the top of the Goat 🐐Pen Kennel to keep their area DRY ! You can strap it down with bungie cords. Just to give the little guys 🐐some extra cover from the bad weather.🐐

    To get your mile time to 6 minutes, start getting a feel for that pace. Set your treadmill at 10 mph and see how long you can last. Another thing that is great is to start doing sprints and repeats faster than that pace for short distances and slowly expand that and try to push faster times. I hoped this helped👍🏻

    I like that you are dedicated to your task of getting to a 6 minute mile. I have found over the years that running on a treadmill actually hurts my run time. I also found that interval running gives me the best improvements. Sprinting all out for 60 seconds then walking for 2 minutes.. Rinse repeat for 30 minutes. This will absolutely improve your run time. Best of luck.

    to hit a 6 minute mile you should integrate interval training into your cardio. 30 second sprint, 1 minute jog, repeat till you hit a goal distance or time like 2 miles or 15 minutes.

    The burner definitely has to go under the gate instead of over it and be placed between logs.. It need good air flow and covering it with logs just seems like it might end badly.. Also Matt needs to get the goat range a better net for the cover.. Cuz the size it is now there are tons of predators that would get inside by clawing over the the side nets.. They won't get the goaties out but they don't have to .they will just do an eat in and then leave..foxes for sure could climb in racoons are insane climbers too

    Hey! I used to run track back in the day and still run now. My best 2 mile was 9:53 and that’s cookin!
    What I found to be most effective for me was running half miles at a near sprint pace, and work toward sprinting a whole half mile at a time. It was fantastic for my cardio and ability to control my breathing which helped tremendously!

    2 times per week, run 4 rounds of 800M for time (2 miles total) with 4:00 rest between. This will greatly increase the pace your body is used to and reduce your recovery time.

    Implement some intervals and tempo runs also make your easy runs more challenging get the treadmill pace down to 7:00 and also try to get weekly mileage have 3-5 mile runs and one long run a week makes running one mile feel easier.

    A wonderful way to take off time off mile time coming from a I did it in the military. I was running 2 miles in 12min and 30 seconds is to sprint up and down a very steep hill for a solid 30-45 mins to work on explosive movement. Anything that is more focused on being explosive will honestly help

    Matt, I think that You should have made the Goat 🐐Shed Roof extension just a little wider than what you did ! It should have been TWICE the width to keep any driving hard rain from getting into their feed trough and doorway into the goat shed ! The little goats 🐐are so darn Cute and Adorable and I love the way they all follow you all around! That's so Sweet and Precious ! ❤🙂

    With this cold, i learned alot about my 1994 f350 7.3idi. Its trickier to start since the batteries are older and I have less leeway in spare voltage, but once i figured it out, I can start it in half the time when it was 80+

    Sprinting for as long as you can repeatedly will get your long distance speeds up. If you run a solid two miles in sprints every day you'll start creeping towards 5.5 - 6 minute miles. You'll get more results on 2+ mile runs in this manner as well. Takes a while to improve it, stay consistent on daily running too, breaks are the devil ;)

    Hey Matt! long time fan, and used to be a decent competitive mid-distance runner so I can offer some advice. Getting some miles in at a decent pace at the end of your workout is a good idea, but you should try for once or twice a week to do hard effort interval running. For mile training, I always liked repeat 400m at goal pace or faster. Do maybe 6 in a workout, with a 200m jog in between the first 3 for recovery, and a 5-10 minute rest at half way. The active recovery makes it hurt for the second set, but it helps you get used to the correct pace when everything hurts

    If you want to be able to run a fast single mile, you need to be able to run at least 10 miles straight, keeping a sub 8 minute mile the whole time. This will allow you to have the stamina to push for the entire run.

    30:60's this was what we did in the Army and it will improve your run time to better than your looking for. Sprint as hard as you can for 30sec and slow jog for 60. And repeat. Do that for a month and you'll see!

    If you put the grate with the tall side towards the back it tilts the logs to the front, throwing more IR at you and the room.

    To get my mile down from 11min to 8min quickly I added sprints.
    Start your mile and shortly after sprint until your close to dieing then jog to catch your breath. Could be a mind thing but my jog was my normal mile jog, the sprinting made up my time. Now my mile normal jog feels easy.

    a way to run a faster mile or any race is to break down the run by fourths so for a mile you will run 400 meters or 0.25 miles at your goal pace as many times as you fill fit to do so. make sure you do a warm and cool down because the interval work will be hard. Hope this helps.

    See, I would have went the other direction with the fireplace. I would have gotten some 1 in. pavers and put them under the legs, before I started cutting on the metal. The extra inch would have allow better airflow as the ashes build up. Just a thought....

    Hey mate, I used to do track and my fastest mile was a 6:17. So a way to go faster is longer strides, when you run you keep a constant pace and move your arms fastest while doing so.

    If you want to speed up on the mile, do a lot of Indian sprints. Jog at a good pace then sprint for awhile, then slow down and jog then sprint. Do a five mile run changing back and forth. That’s what we did back in the USMC!

    Swimming will help you improve your run quickly. You don’t even have to be good at it. Just try it long enough to feel good, like 30+ minutes. I have always been a decent runner (05:46 fastest mile ever). Swimming kept me from losing speed, as long as I stay consistent. Thanks for getting me to Texas, by the way!! Loving Austin.

    To help with your mile time start doing some 30/60 sprint/jogs this can be changed to any time frame you want a.e. 60/120 60/90 so on and so fourth one of the things the military had us do in basic training to help with cardio vascular development which in turn helped with mile times

    Dude, take the grate out and raise it so the flame source is underneath everything including the iron and it’s protected and since flames burn up, less chance of blowing your house up

    When training for a race, even against your own time, never neglect to run in training the speed youd like to run the race. Try a quarter mile in ~1:30, then rest for 2-3 mins and repeat for up to 8 reps, or until your time is above 1:30.

    Hey Matt, off the subject but, Log starters aren't the safest option. They don't have any safe devices built in. A thermocoupler to shut off the gas in case the fire goes out so it doesn't fill your house with gas.

    i work in the fireplace industry and the log lighter should be underneath the grate....if the logs shift or fall while the fire is burning it could damage the log lighter and lead to a gas leak....additionally its not designed to be in the fire directly and with the grate cut like that it will be directly in the fire causing it to wear out significantly faster

    Just a suggestion with the goat hut. You could put hinges on it so you don’t need to screw and unscrew the wood every time you want to clean or modify it.

    What helps my run times is hill sprints and backpacking. Varying the elevation gain / drop just peels that time off for me.

    If you run further but at a slower pace you build up endurance for shorter faster runs. Try running like 3-4 miles but at a 8 min pace and then you’ll have some better endurance and it’ll be easier to shave off mile runtime.

    Get a concept 2 rower. Awesome for cardio…. And upper body strength workout as a bonus. Like doing hundreds of light deadlifts.

    To get your mile time down… run 2 miles and do every other 1/4 mile hard. So essentially, start on an easy 1/4 than push yourself for a 1/4… do that for 2 miles. Also longer distances work wonders. 👍🏻 Good luck with your goal!

    If you want your run time down, use the Navy Seals Training Guide, specifically the running section to set your baseline and shoot towards your PR time.

    You can do 30/60 or 60/120 to get your mile time’s improvement. 30 second sprint/60 second walk or 60 sprint/120 walk. The idea is to bring your heart rate to a moderately high bpm and let it regulate as close to normal as possible. You obviously have the physic to run the distance, you need the deliberate breathing,mental, and heart rhythm to sync up

    For shorter runs like 1 mile, intermittent sprints will help you get to your goal quickly. Pop an earbud in that makes a noise every 30 seconds. sprint 30, walk 30, and alternate like that. Do that for 1 mile then 1.5 miles when you are ready. It will raise your VO2 dramatically. Think about lengthening and exaggerating your stride during your sprints. Alternate this method with 1.5 - 2 mile normal runs. On your normal runs, think about your pace, stride, and your breathing. For pace work, practice 1/4 miles runs at your goal pace (sub 1:30 minute quarter mile), You can do this on a measured distance, like a 400m oval track, or a treadmill if you need to. Learn the minimum pace.

    Hey man for your run time you can do what we do in the army a sprint light poles. The way you do it is find a good stretch of light poles that are about evenly spaced start at one and you would sprint as fast as you can to the next than walk to the next and sprint as fast as you can rinse and reapet about 2miles worth you do that once or twice a week and you will start shredding your run time.     Matt I think you need to start doing fast intervals for a mile time it's wroth it also do some Fartlek workouts and also do some hill workouts. I run cross country and track also a 5:37 minute miler.

    Hey Matt!! I ran cross country and although running long distance seems like the way to get your time down it’s not. Sprints are your friend. You gotta have the muscle and stamina in your legs and your lungs. Not just the lungs.

    Do hill sprints and lightly jog down to catch your breath. It improved my 2 mile by 30 seconds doing it once a week with some mile long runs in between

    Mat keep a good 6:30 pace for your mile then dead sprint the last quater mile. Do 30-60s to prep for this

    Running under six minute mile is mainly about stride and the pace in which you run. In combination with controlling your breathing. If your legs start to feel fatigue increase your oxygen intake.
    The last time your feet spend planted on the ground the faster you move no I know that sounds like an obvious thing but when you’re trying to run under a six minute mile it makes a huge difference. Running the mile although it’s not my favorite sport it is some thing that I am relatively good at. Mile time 5:30
