Tom Waits was my Dad's absolute favorite... my Dad passed a couple years ago and I'm sitting here with a fire going finally diving into his favorite artist... this song has hit me in a certain way and it came up after I searched Alice which my Dad sang to me once... I busted on him about it at the time but what I would not give for a hug from him now... miss him and I finally see why he loved Tom Waits... this song made me smile and cry at same time I'm going to dig deeper now
That’s beautiful. Took me a while to get into Tom. My speech professor recommended “Martha” some years back. A few months later at a Kava bar some guy overheard me talking to my friend about Bob Dylan and recommended Tom with this smirk and knowing glance, as if he was telling me the world’s best kept secret. I just kinda smiled and acknowledged him with a quick word and a nod. He looked like he had been through a lot, yet he was pretty upbeat, joking with the bartender and downing Kava. I figured he must’ve been in recovery or something with his strung out look-wild assumption on my part, I know-and I imagined with that secret look he gave me, Tom Waits and his music had been a kind of life preserver for the guy while in a sea of oblivion. Now almost two years after that, I think I’ve finally gotten through Tom’s whole discography, and though some would say the material can get bleak and brutal, I think it’s extremely uplifting. It doesn’t shy away from the darkness of life. I think Tom’s tunes show that with the right touch of madness, someone can look at the woes we face and laugh. Just listen to a song like “Never Let Go” and I think that captures his absurd rebellion perfectly. I can definitely say the music has gotten me through some tough times now too. (Sorry for the overly long response… I randomly get inspired by others’ comments and then never know how long I can go on spewing out my nonsense. Suffice it to say that I saw another soul behind your words.) All the best, Danny
The wild thing about Tom Waits is, if you listen to interviews with him, he just talks like that. You would be excused for thinking his lyrics are the result of hours of hard labor, but it just falls out of his mouth fully formed like that. It’s amazing.
