Tom Waits was my Dad's absolute favorite... my Dad passed a couple years ago and I'm sitting here with a fire going finally diving into his favorite artist... this song has hit me in a certain way and it came up after I searched Alice which my Dad sang to me once... I busted on him about it at the time but what I would not give for a hug from him now... miss him and I finally see why he loved Tom Waits... this song made me smile and cry at same time I'm going to dig deeper now

    • @ironflazambat5815
      @ironflazambat5815 ปีที่แล้ว +6

That’s beautiful. Took me a while to get into Tom. My speech professor recommended “Martha” some years back. A few months later at a Kava bar some guy overheard me talking to my friend about Bob Dylan and recommended Tom with this smirk and knowing glance, as if he was telling me the world’s best kept secret. I just kinda smiled and acknowledged him with a quick word and a nod. He looked like he had been through a lot, yet he was pretty upbeat, joking with the bartender and downing Kava. I figured he must’ve been in recovery or something with his strung out look-wild assumption on my part, I know-and I imagined with that secret look he gave me, Tom Waits and his music had been a kind of life preserver for the guy while in a sea of oblivion. Now almost two years after that, I think I’ve finally gotten through Tom’s whole discography, and though some would say the material can get bleak and brutal, I think it’s extremely uplifting. It doesn’t shy away from the darkness of life. I think Tom’s tunes show that with the right touch of madness, someone can look at the woes we face and laugh. Just listen to a song like “Never Let Go” and I think that captures his absurd rebellion perfectly. I can definitely say the music has gotten me through some tough times now too.
(Sorry for the overly long response… I randomly get inspired by others’ comments and then never know how long I can go on spewing out my nonsense. Suffice it to say that I saw another soul behind your words.)
      All the best,
      Danny

The wild thing about Tom Waits is, if you listen to interviews with him, he just talks like that. You would be excused for thinking his lyrics are the result of hours of hard labor, but it just falls out of his mouth fully formed like that. It’s amazing.

    She was a middle-class girl
She was in over her head
She thought she could stand up in the deep end
    He had a bulletproof smile
    He had money to burn
She thought she had the moon in her pocket
    But now she's dead
    She's so dead forever
    Dead and lovely now
I've always been told to remember this
Don't let a fool kiss you, never marry for love
    He was hard to impress
    He knew everyone's secrets
He wore her on his arm just like jewelry
He never gave, but he got
He kept her on a leash
He's not the kind of wheel you fall asleep at
    But now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
    Come closer, look deeper
    You're falling fast
Just like a plane on the stormy sea
She made up someone to be
She made up somewhere to be from
This is one business in the world
Where there's no problem at all
Everything that is left, they will only plow under
Soon everyone you knew will be gone
    And now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
    But now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
I've always been told to remember this
Don't let a kiss fool you, never marry for love
    Everything has its price
    Everything has its place
What's more romantic than dying in the moonlight?
Now they're all watching the sea
What's lost can never be broken
Her roots were sweet, but they were so shallow
    And now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
    And now she's dead
    Forever dead
And she's so dead and lovely now

Perfectly encompasses the feeling of knowing it's all about to end, and about to end soon. It's a dull glaze. The glaze that prevents you from really thinking about it. The glaze like the glaze of one's eyes, where they just don't focus on anything. It's that, but with everything.

Kerosene dreams ✨gave way to this my amends to loved ones past as I observe every mornin...I start each day this way, light a Marlboro, turn on my coffee, and turn on Tom...thank you for helping me create a ritual that allows me to face the day sir...my Jennifer, (we called her Sistifer) loved your music very much...I know she's singing along where she is now...

    Orta sınıf bir kızdı
    Kafasında sonlanmıştı
En sonunda da ayakta kalabileceğini sandı
Kurşun geçirmez bir gülüşü vardı adamın
    Ve yakmak için parası
    Kız ayı cebinde taşıdığını sandı
    Fakat şimdi kız ölü
    Tamamen ölü
Sonsuza dek ölü ve güzel şimdi
Her zaman bunu hatırlamam için uyarıldım:
Bir aptalın seni öpmesine izin verme
    Asla aşk için evlenme
    Adam etkilemesi zor biriydi
    Herkesin sırrını bilirdi
    Kızı koluna taktı,
    Tıpkı bir mücevher gibi
    Asla vermez ama alırdı
    Kıza tasma takmıştı
    Güvenebileceğin türden biri değildi
    Fakat şimdi kız ölü
    Tamamen ölü
Sonsuza dek ölü ve güzel şimdi
    Yakına gel, daha derin bak
    Hızlı düştün
Tıpkı fırtınalı bir denizdeki uçak gibi
    Kız başka biri olduğunu uydurdu
    Başka bir yerden geldiğini uydurdu
Hiç problem olmayan dünyadaki tek işti bu.
    Giden her şey
    Sadece yerin dibine girecekler
    Yakında tanıdığın herkes gitmiş olacak
    Fakat şimdi kız ölü
    Tamamen ölü
Sonsuza dek ölü ve güzel şimdi
    Fakat şimdi kız ölü
    Tamamen ölü
Sonsuza dek ölü ve güzel şimdi
Her zaman bunu hatırlamam için uyarıldım:
Bir aptalın seni öpmesine izin verme
    Asla aşk için evlenme
    Her şeyin bir ücreti vardır
    Her şeyin bir yeri vardır
Ay ışığında ölmekten daha romantik ne vardır?
    Şimdi hepsi denizi izliyor
    Kaybedilen kırılmaz
    Kızın kökleri tatlıydı ancak üstünkörüydü
    Fakat şimdi kız ölü
    Tamamen ölü
Sonsuza dek ölü ve güzel şimdi
    Fakat şimdi kız ölü
    Tamamen ölü
Sonsuza dek ölü ve güzel şimdi

She was a middle class girl
She was in over her head
She thought she would stand up in the deep end
He had a bullet proof smile
    He had money to burn
She thought she had the moon in her pocket
    But now she's dead
    She's so dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
I've always been told to remember this
Don't let a fool kiss you
    Never marry for love
    He was hard to impress
    He knew everyone's secrets
He wore her on his arm just like jewelry
He never gave but he got
He kept her on a leash
He's not the kind of wheel you fall asleep at
    But now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
    Come closer, look deeper
    You've fallen fast
Just like a plane on a stormy sea
She made up someone to be
She made up somewhere to be from
This is one business in the world where that's no problem at all
    Everything that is left
    They will only plow under
Soon every one you knew will be gone
    And now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
    But now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
I've always been told to remember this
Don't let a kiss fool you
    Never marry for love
    Everything has its price
    Everything has its place
What's more romantic then dying in the moonlight?
Now they're all watching the sea
What's lost can never be broken
Her roots were sweet but they were so shallow
    And now she's dead
    Forever dead
    Forever dead and lovely now
    And now she's dead
    Forever dead
And she's so dead and lovely now
