@3:54 If you decide to go the route of the Combat Patrol Magazine, please keep in mind that some of the patrols are now invalid, like the Genestealer Cult one. If you're looking for longevity going that route, make sure you pick an army that already has it's 10th Edition Codex out, since that is what makes the new Combat Patrol box set. Also, YES to Kill Team! It's a fantastic game that's worth a try, especially with its free rules coming out in a few weeks.
Thanks! I added the combat patrol magazine part when the video was already ‘done’ as a little extra. Know nothing about it. I’ll pin your comment, very useful! And yeah I’m returning to KT now that they have toned down the rules a bit. Very exciting stuff!
All Combat Patrols, new and old, with the sole exceptions of the old Necrons which never received CP rules at 10E release and the old Marines which can be played as the White Dwarf CP with addition of a Librarian, are still legal for current 10E play.
Got back into the hobby myself 6 months ago after taking decades off since playing as a kid back in 2nd/3rd edition. Great to see SM2 is creating buzz for the hobby!
Yeah its great to see so many invested in the 40K universe! Myself I’ve been back since covid period. ‘Played’ Fantasy 6th edition for a bit as a kid, but mainly just for painting and collecting back then. Glad to have you back 🤘🔥
Big same, I started back in 6th ed as a middle schooler and only played a handful of games. Collected some Death Watch 2 years ago, and lost em in a car wreck. Got a CP of Space Marines to paint up as Dark Angels, war…it never changes…
I played Boarding Actions in 9e, and 1 game in 10e before the new 10e BA book came out. Its a lot of fun, but the need to have $200+ of terrain that's only usable in boarding action games and Kill Team is a significant barrier to entry.
I got into 40k this past February 0f 24. Have over 7000 points of necrons currently and painted. I started playing big games but am currently playing more Boarding Actions that full blown 40k games. I think BA is amazing and I can get 3 games in at my LGS and switch up lists and detachments if I want. Boarding Actions is solid and don't hesitate to explore it. Cheers!
Not gonna lie, Space Marine 2 got me to buy my first 40k box. Found a Recruit Edition box from 9th edition at my local game store (space marines + necrons) and my total out of pocket was $30 because of a weekend sale + rewards points I cashed in. Figured at that price, I'd be willing to try tabletop 40k.
That box is fantastic. Throughout 9E it was the go-to box for Necron players wanting to buy Necron Warriors since it only cost slightly more and had tons more plastic that could be sold separately on eBay.
Don’t buy starter sets unless you plan to play both armies, otherwise they will just take up space. Do a mini in the shop to start and get a feel for it. Take your time.
@@thewynnest all I want to do is Space Wolves and have something that may be a cheaper option to start gaming with. Don’t want to make a big investment at this stage. What something that organically grows, but I’m not sure if Warhammer is the answer 😬
Lots of "Battle Reports" online if you wanna get a feel for the gameplay. Can also just test some gameplay yourself at home with some dice and proxies for the models. Literally anything can be a proxy.
I started painting after Space Marine 2 and am better than i ever expected to be (even if it takes me like 5-6 hours of agonizing over details on one space marine lol). 40k just seems really hard to get i to, so of all things, my friends and I are dipping our toes into BLOOD BOWL! I have a lizard men team coming tomorrow that I can’t wait to paint
That’s a very good decision!! Blood Bowl is probably my favorite GW game. Try out Blood Bowl sevens some day. It’s quick games, smalller pitch and smaller teams. Can do a game in about 40 minutes.
@@thewynnest I was reading a bit about that. Seems like a good way to play quicker games! I have my eyes on a couple of pitch playmats on Etsy that have the lines for regular and 7s. I've played a bit of Blood Bowl 2 on Steam, but it's completely new to my friends. I'm looking forward to it. Going to be cool to see how we all paint up our teams.
@@ntmetroid I know the ones youre talking about. Really cool that you have a couple of friends to get together and play it! Make sure to start a league, it's loads of fun. If you want to talk about BB a bit more or show off some painting progress, consider joining the discord. It's free and we have a lovely little community going on!
Actually Boarding Actions is also another great way to get into the game as they just released updated rules for it for 10th edition just last month and all the games are at 500 points. The terrain can also easily be proxied if buying the Into the Dark terrain sets is out of someone's price range.
Definitely, Star Wars Legion will be back for sure. It’s hard balancing all my interest, even (or rather especially) within this Wargaming niche. I’m pretty familiar with the new rules, but reading and watching battle reports. But I have to get some people together, some have left with the recent update. When this happens the content will naturally come.
Space Wolves are awesome. Never got into them but always wanted to get them! Good luck! In case you want to share some of your progress, or have questions; consider joining the discord. Link is in the description.
Hey my comment!! xD. This video is great for starting out. I would also like to add one more way to get models, secondhand! Miniswap/FB groups are a great way to buy models at a deep discount. You help perpetuate another degenerates wallet to buy more and you get a great models cheap! And congrats on the new space dwarves, We need more LoV armies around!
Glad I got your approval this time 🤣🤣 nah jokes aside I did get pretty much this entire Votann army secondhand actually. Most of it half assembled, some brand new. Right after 10th dropped, I think people thought: oh hell no, THIS I didnt sign up for. I’m glad I was able to pick them up. Have yet to paint half of it tho.
So to make sure i understand this correctly. Im looking to start with killteam but if i end up enjoying it and want to possibly get into 40k i can then use my minis from the kill team box towards the associated army??
Yeah that’s why Kill Team is a great start. You’ll get a pretty good idea of the playstyle. I like Killteam for picking up different factions. If I REALLY like a faction, I might get some more models for 40K play. But often times I just stick with KT.
Painting ? Nah, first ask yourself "Hey, have I ever played a tabletop minis game before ? Have I ever even had the desire or am I jumping on a hype train with a much larger ticket price than I could ever Imagine ?" then go try one at a GW shop, or FLGS. Stare at the prices and remember you are buying plastic figures. Now stare longer. Then you need to know they outdate your stuff every few years, release a new edition of the same game, and sell you all the same stuff you already had !!! Yay 40k !!
This is a follow up video because people were asking for a more in depth buying guide so thats what I provided. Not getting into GW's business practices, I give my opinion on those in livestreams when people ask me about it. There is a reason I play Star Wars Legion more than I ever played 40k. But you're 100% right, your army getting wiped from the history books is tough. Yesterday someone commented on buying and painting a 2K Harlequins list. When he was done painting his last model, 10th edition dropped. Harlequins lost their codex and are no longer a faction. So for anyone reading this: make sure you know these things before you commit to this hobby, Games Workshop games in particular. Ask your local game store to do a demo game, do research, ask other players, do more reserach, do another demo game, read about how Games Workshop has a 3 year rotation for their games, do more research. Still ok with everything? Welcome to this amazing hobby.
@@thewynnesthere’s my thought / who cares about rotation? You can surely still play your army with your mates. Unless we are talking strictly competitive sanctioned tournaments?
@@crestfallenwarrior6996 sure! You and your gaming group can decide to stick with something. In my experience tho, that just doesn’t happen a lot. I don’t have a big enough player group to keep this interesting tho. Playing against the same armies over and over again might get a bit boring, one of the appeals is to play against vastly different factions. But if you have a somewhat large dedicated player group that sticks with a certain ruleset, I’d be all in for that; I hate having to learn new rules/point upgrades every few months. But you’re right, nothing stops you from playing the way you want.
Not yet! But I am kinda waiting things out a bit. I'll try some of the new edition in the next few weeks. Thing I don't like about it is that I have to print out everything. Sounds weird, but I'd rather wait so I can buy the upgraded cards and rulebook.

My only issue with kill team is the recent release has most of the teams price increased by 5-15 dollars.
Yeah, it was a a sweet price point. Now they're just expensive to me.
Hard to get into a game when your buying guide is literally all products that are “if you can get it” or “always sold out”
