Dallas used to be an engineering town back in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1958, an engineer at Texas Instruments invented one of the top 10 greatest inventions of all time as far as its impact on mankind. It was the fully integrated circuit, allowing computers to be smaller than whole rooms and allowed for the worldwide internet with PCs. Then Jack Kilby and two other TI engineers patented the handheld calculator in 1967. Don Wetzel patented the Automated Teller Machine in Irving in 1969. Ross Perot, in Dallas, conceived of the idea of the computer services industry in 1962. In 1969, Collins Radio engineers designed and created the telecom equipment for the 1969 moon launch for NASA. They had previously tested for NASA on of the very first satellites, Echo #1, in 1960. These patents and engineering work created wealth, and the wealth created jobs. We only had 1.8 million people back then in what we call the DFW Metroplex with 8.1 million people now.
