  • After discussing a different Geoff Edwards, Richard Kline and his partner Melody try to get over the first hurdle - the easiest subject box. Can they knock it out, or will they play The $1,000 Pyramid?
    (This round caused such an uproar with viewers that it was replayed on the June 13, 1983 episode of the program to assure viewers that the result was correct.)

    The first thing Richard said was Little Bo Peep, which is indeed a nursery rhyme. If getting "nursery rhymes" in her head was enough to prevent her from getting "fairy tales," I'd say the fault lies more with Richard than with any quirk of the mind.

      The fault lies with the contestant for not being able to shake "nursery rhymes". The rest of the clues were clearly fairy tales, so it's on her for not making that connection, not on Richard for leading with a bogus clue.

    • @nicholasfox966
      @nicholasfox966 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The category could be "Things That are Beige" and you could say "Music" and you wouldn't be buzzed. It's not about the correctness of your clue; you get buzzed if you describe or list things that have the answer in them, or something synonymous with the answer.

    • @veggieoilerfan2940
      @veggieoilerfan2940 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nicholasfox966 Actually, there have been times where players have been buzzed for giving clues that didn’t pertain to the subject. One particular incident that I remember is when the subject was “Things You Write.” The player was buzzed for saying, “A pencil.” Since a pencil is something you write with, but not something you write, the player (I can’t remember who it was) was buzzed for it.

    • @nicholasfox966
      @nicholasfox966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@veggieoilerfan2940 That's a usage mistake, not a subject mistake. Of course pencils pertain to the subject of writing, but the answer was asking for things that you write, not write with. That's the buzz. It's a misreading of the clue. But in my example, "music" has nothing to do with "beige", but you would not be buzzed, because you are at least giving a clue that could conceivably, theoretically, match the answer. It's a terrible clue, but it's not a mistaken one. The usage matches. In the cluegiver's mind, music might just somehow be something that is beige. But you don't write a pencil. It's the incorrect usage that gets you buzzed. Or just saying a word in the answer in your clue.

      tugboat2030 Tinker Bell is a fairy, not a fairy tale, and would get you buzzed for going around the subject.

    Yes, she should have gotten fairy tales. But so much of this round is about the confidence and attitude of the person giving the clues. Notice that Richard hesitates before he gives the first clue. This subliminally dispels confidence in her, and she now feels she has to try harder than she ought to. Then Lil Bo Peep comes out (not technically a fairy tale), and she gets stuck. Especially with the bottom row, you have to give the clues quickly and with confidence. Just spit out names of fairy tales commandingly.
