- First landing of an SA Airlink Embraer E190 (ZS-YAA) at St Helena Airport on Monday 21st August 2017. Conditions very windy hence sound toned down and the buffeting of the camera (and cameraman!)
Building this airport was a monumental task and very well done
The look of the Atlantic Ocean all around, makes you feel peaceful. (y)
This is amazing to see as I just watched a special on how everyone used to get to this island! Fantastic!

i read about this island when i read about napoleon life after i saw a documentary about it they talk about the airport problem so i search it they have now that's cool i hope i can visit it someday
stayed with my bird that wonderful island 15 days a perfect place to rest and absolutely buzzin at nights

That would be incredibly difficult. Onl so man kin ds of trees have any chance at all in the right locations
How do they get the gas (for airplanes) to the island?
Jet A1 arrives in tanktainers by sea. The contents are transferred to refueller trucks when required and used to refuel the aircraft. Later this year the Airport Fuel Farm and Bulk Fuel Installation will be able to supply the airport, negating the need for tanktainers.

Seems like quite a difficult approach and landing.... a bit like the BA 737.... Anyway, i hope for all the best!
Embraer has conducted a number of tests and the company's pilots have concluded that the landing must be steep and the autopilot turned off at the beginning of landing procedures.

Small island with few planes, they can always plan very well the best time to land!

This island was one of the few isolated and remote islands.
This is no longer the case.

So you live on St Helena Dean or perhaps an island in the middle of nowhere? Or do you only have access to slow, expensive satellite-based Broadband? If you have answered yes to either of these questions, then you'll understand the need to reduce the size of the video to the minimum to allow it to upload without it timing out or costing an absolute fortune to do so... Unfortunately this has an impact on the quality of the video. Not everyone has fast, unlimited Broadband. It may be 2017 where you live, but Broadband on St Helena gets as slow as the dial-up speeds of the 1990s!

Just flew the Airlink E190 for the first time yesterday. The interior design is simple yet beautiful with leather seats, and its very comfortable and quite like Airbus. But one thing I noticed with the Embraers, they are the worst of passenger jets when it comes to withstanding turbulence in my opinion. You'll feel like you are flying on paper.
I flew on this aircraft four days ago - it seemed to cope with the turbulence very well.

Bob, I assume you live at St Helena. Are these flights operating regularly? Do you know for how long BA flew to St Helena with the B737?
Can I answer? BA does not fly the route, they only tested the airport with the 737 and decide to ditch it. Airlink flies weekly from Cape Town and Johannesburg on Saturdays, connecting in Windhoek, Namibia. They promised to add more flights though.

High winds are common there. Dangerous airport - accident waiting to happen.
between 40 and 60 degrees south winds are brutal
No more dangerous than say Madeira. If you can detect it and predict it, then you can manage the winds far more successfully than if it were to suddenly occur when you're not expecting it.
Then, how do they land on Funchal, Madeira?
Using well trained pilots. They may well have other systems in place to predict it using models and historic data.

The Bombardier CS100 would be the perfect plane to operate out of here.
If that was true, they would've tried it. But CS100 can not operate safely under those conditions.
No, not really. If that was true, they would have used the CS100, but they did not. CS100 can't handle the winds, the manouvering (short strip) and the distance all together.

chavesbra What do you mean "they would of tried it" There is less than a hand full of airlines flying the damn thing so it's not like anyone has a couple of them just laying around and ready for testing in a remote island.
Mánuel Kiatoko -- Yet, they did not try it. BUT they tried the E190. And it was just perfect. There is no reason to try CS100 in such hard conditions, the plane just can not handle it safely.
Embraer 190. Brazilian technology at the service of the world! Yes, we invented the plane and now we are opening routes where the first world technologies failed! Proud to be Brazilian!!!

I'll give a thumbs up for that, especially for beating the 737. The airline flying this aircraft is the biggest independent regional airline in SA and is well run. The British abandoned the service and immediately touted it as the world worst airport.

That's one point of view, certainly. Hopefully the benefits outweigh the negatives. People's lives have already been saved as a result of quicker access to emergency medical care.
