Flying from St Helena to Cape Town

  • This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. This is not a time to travel, but instead...please Stay Home! Stick around to the end of the video for some of my thoughts about the state of travel today.
    In this video, I'll share a bit from "behind the scenes" at the St. Helena airport as well as some scenes from the flight back to Cape Town with Airlink. But the real star of the show on the flight from St Helena to Cape Town was the approach at sunset past Table Mountain. It was truly jaw-dropping.
    Watching this approach into Cape Town from St. Helena - undoubtedly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen from the air - was an opportunity to pause and reflect.
    I have always taken great comfort - even assigned some of my own identity to the fact that, thanks to commercial aviation, I can get anywhere, anytime, in unbelievable comfort. Producing these videos about St. Helena has been a cathartic process for me. A reminder of what was possible not too long ago.
    Of course, travel like this is not possible now. We’re each doing our part, staying home, washing our hands, maintaining social distance. These things are hard, we all know that. We miss being in the sky. We miss what aviation provides - that’s connection. And, stunning views like this. Views, I’m sorry to say, I didn’t fully appreciate before this crisis occurred.
    Aviation brings the world together. A place like St. Helena - previously weeks away - becomes only a matter of hours from anywhere else on the planet. But, now we’re more apart than we’ve ever been.
    We’re separated from our family, our friends, and the rest of the world. I hope we use this time to celebrate the small moments and to feel gratitude for what we can enjoy.
    I feel for everyone who works in travel or people who travel for work. Your world has been rocked. These are strange times. But we know this: We know travel will return. Yes! It will be different, but it will return. Will travel be what it once was? Will the glamor be gone? I don’t know.
    But I am sure of this: It will come back. Humans are explorers. We yearn to see the world, to seek new experiences, to make strangers our friends, to see new places. Commercial aviation will make this possible again.
    I look forward to getting back in the air, to connecting with the world, as soon as it’s possible to do so. In the meantime, I’ll continue posting on this channel with the goal of bringing a little joy to you, along with a reminder of what was, and maybe a prediction or two about what will be.

      Paro Bhutan was one of my favorite landings. I've done it twice, very exciting, and fun to see green horns in tears as we rocket down the valley.
      The grass strip like a ski jump into my village in Indonesia is probably the best though. 23 percent grade slope

    Great and emotional video. St Helena is in my bucket list (or my dream list) As to the best views from a plane window... I have to mention three (1) Landing in Venice sitting on the right side of the plane you see the whole city from the air, (2) A take off from LGA in late spring at sunset, the Skyline of Manhattan with several shades of pink and orange in the background, and (3) Uluru again at sunset seen from a plane flying from MEB to SIN

    I totally agree, Jeb. I don’t get to fly a whole lot, even as a member of the airline industry, just because of work schedule, but this whole thing gives me so much perspective and while I’ve never taken it for granted, I miss being able to at least fly a 2 hour flight to visit my friends in Michigan when I live in Atlanta. Thank you Jeb, for highlighting such a great aspect of our modern society. More people need to go out and see what’s outside their “stomping grounds”

    • @TheCriminalViolin
      @TheCriminalViolin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pilotseye24 Are you sure? Or is it structured more so like most other airlines, where the smaller brand, in this case Airlink, is a "independent brand" of the big airline, like that of say, PelAir, Horizon or American Eagle to their respective parent companies? As far as I have came to understand and read, Airlink is akin to that with South African, so I have to wonder if that will cause Airlink to subsequently get shut down as well.

    • @pilotseye24
      @pilotseye24 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheCriminalViolin No that would be an airline like South African Express.
      Airlink are privately owned. They did have a code share agreement with SAA but as stated above that will no longer be the case from June as Airlink has severed all it's ties with the national carrier.

The lightning within the cloud mass made for a mesmerizing explosion of colour. (2) on a day flight from Dublin to Rome, the flight took us over the Alps. I had never seen the grandeur of mother nature was impressive.

    Thanks Jeb! I have always traveled vicariously with you on your journeys and I particularly enjoy the time you spend and share at the various destinations. Other aviation vloggers devote all their time to the flight itself, something that is essential too; however, I see so many arrive in some wonderful, scenic destination without so much as panning across the view in front of the airport. After all, we go to destinations for a reason -- business and leisure. Even with business travel, often the meeting location was chosen specifically for its beauty, climate or significant points of interest. If travel is the Tootsie Roll Pop, then the destination is the chocolate center.
    You, more than most, include views and information about your destinations. In the case of St. Helena, among those remote islands I often dream of traveling to, you devoted enough time to give the viewer a feel for the island rather than spend the time there comparing their snack bar breakfast biscuits to those found in Omaha, NE.

    Welcome back Jeb..best views for me was flying from Rio to Santiago in South America...over the Andes...brilliant !! Also doing an Antarctic flight with Qantas some years ago...again stunning flying over the most harsh terrain in the world !! Great vision from the apron...well done as always !! That is a stunning view of Table Mountain....and Capetown is a great city....been there a few times for work and loved it !! And well said about these most troubling of times....who knows when "normal" will return ?? Thanks mate...one day we will get back in the air...in the interim stay safe and stay well !!

    Thanks for sharing your experience. My flight home from South Africa just a few days before yours was also my last flight. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to visit that wonderful country

    Best view: Departing SEA on a clear day heading SE pilots will sometimes stick to a lower altitude and fly right past the summit of Mt Rainier. So close you feel like you could touch it.

      I have to agree. I've flown in and out of SEA hundreds of times. On a clear day, the view is outstanding, particularly if you are approaching from the west, over the Sound.

    Fantastic narration, your thoughts about the virus and future of flying was thoughtful. I will look for more of your videos. Fav window seat flight was SRQ - DFW, I got to see the best "green flash" ever as we climbed out at dusk.

    What a great video! My favorite was an approach to Frankfurt from BKK. Over Austria and Bavaria, all river valleys were filled to the top with white clouds, the rest was in bright sunshine. Nature is so beautiful.

    my favorite approach is into Kahului, Maui. It is so cool coming in from the north and overflying the valley before doing a large U-turn and landing, all with looming mountains on both sides!
