The PAINS of Living with an EV! My WORST Experience Yet

  • I'm trying to live with an EV, but it's really quite the struggle. Starting my day enthusiastic for the rapid development of charging infrastructure, you can witness first hand how quickly the experience turns sour with a concoction of problems for my Porsche Taycan.
    It's fair to say that new charging points are being built very, very quickly and it's certainly getting much easier to find locations in general here in the UK. However, the take up of EVs in the first place is probably growing even faster than that, and as such the availability of charging points is not improving in the slightest. Beyond that, you are then faced with the lucky dip whether you'll get a good charging experience of something won't work as it should.
    Starting out with a very optimistic outlook on the whole thing, having obviously been away from the Taycan for more or less 4 months, the first step is to head out of London to get a full charge. To be fair, that's ironic in the first place, but the city centre is lacking significant numbers of fast chargers so it's actually overall quicker in theory to get out of town to do an empty to full charge. First stop is a new Ionity charger at Beaconsfield Services on the M40, not too far away, and with 4 charging points freshly installed.
    However, things quickly turn for the worse as two machines are out of order or not yet activated, and there's a queue to access the other two. After waiting that out and eventually getting connected the speed is strong and the battery is filling up until it all goes wrong and repeatedly disconnects, preventing the Taycan from taking much more than half charge.
    My go to response is therefore to head to the next nearest charger; a BP Pulse located only a few miles away to have another go... to no great success. Unfortunately I'm again getting errors for reasons unknown to me, but really changing my mood from one of trying to show how this process works well to having a horrible experience trying to get any battery into my EV.
    I believe it can work, and I cannot wait until I have my own home charger in the near future, but without one it's virtually impossible to manage this process and my patience is being really tested despite my desire to make it work for me.

    The EV experience is certainly one that requires patience, but safe to say this day did not exactly help my desire to keep trying. From no local chargers, to queues, error messages, awkward connections, and generally failing... it's not easy. I'm going to persist, but would you, or would you give up now?

      Exactly, if you don't have a designated place to charge at your domocile, then it really doesn't work. It's kind of like a life-style choice, you can't just up and buy an EV in today's world because we haven't developed a normalized infrastructure to support wide use of EVs yet. Treating it like a normal car (right now with our current infrastructure), i.e. going to the charging station like he is as if it were a gas pump, isn't really realistic or feasible.

    • @m40dot

      @@AFKburrito Not sure you guys live, but myself and endless others just charge them at their house and have a full 'tank' every morning they want it, for a fraction of the cost of gas as well, and 100% windsourced energy in my case. 95+% of time for me and others, their car is at home overnight. So much better than any gas stations stops. And of course let's just say for road trip charging needs, there's Tesla, and then there's a major drop off as others networks are were Tesla was like 5+ years ago yet.

    As a Tesla owner for the past 5 years; this was absolutely PAINFUL to watch; I don't know why the non Tesla fast chargers are so temperamental and horrible; I have supercharged hundreds and hundreds of times with my car; you show up; back in; plug in and walk away; it's that simple; no dicking around with buttons or apps or swipe cards or any of that crap. I had only one experience where the SC didn't work and that was because power was off to the entire town for an hour; gas stations were out of commission too.
    I really hope these non Tesla charge companies get their act together; it's videos like these that are doing nothing for the EV cause in fact they hinder it.

      As an owner for nearly eight years, you’re absolutely correct. In the early days, it was still easy to find sufficient Super Chargers since Elon thought ahead. Now it’s near impossible not to find an SC or even destination charger in the Tesla network. You can literally drive on any road in US and be within driving range of a Tesla charger. Pull in,plug in and you’re on your way.

Electron volt storage is deeply problematic for the electronics industry with almost all power being generated on demand. There are definitely infrastructure issues and even here in Norway I am not sure I would whole heartedly recommend an EV to someone who does not have the ability to charge at home. That said, Tesla have done really well with their supercharging network with large charging sites and excellent availability. Within twenty minutes of where I live there are three sites giving a total of 76 fast charging stalls.

    I am really considering an EV but the infrastructure just isn't there yet.
    I've thought long and hard because i live in the city as i have no private parking - so, i'd have to get in line to charge somewhere.
    When traveling across the USA, i see the lines of EV all waiting at the reststops. i go in, use the rest room, eat lunch, head back to car... and the same cars are there same place in line...
    then i head off in my non-ev vehicle.
    yes, not yet ready for my money. But hopefully enough folks with off-street parking start buying EVs and the infrastructure will grow enough to support those without off street parking.

As a company car driver I’ve driven plug-in hybrids since 2014 to 2019 and can honestly say that 90% of the time I was running on petrol. When it came to charging, the stations were always hit and miss, and when they did work the charge rate was always at a snails pace (apart from Tesla there weren’t fast chargers when I was driving). I am amazed that the charging situation in the SE of England is still so poor (I haven’t driven PHEV for over 3yrs). I know that electric cars are the way forward but for the time being I still firmly believe that PHEV is the only viable alternative. Thanks for the video 👍.

    I have owned a BWM i3s and it was the worst experience I’ve had owning any car. It was 3 years ago in the Netherlands and the nearest fast charger to my home in Friesland was a 40km drive from my house. Luckily we had a home charger, but the range was shocking. I ended up using the car exclusively for doing shopping or driving to work, making it useless for when anyone else wanted to go further than 100 km away from home . You mentioned that the Netherlands has a great infrastructure, but much like the UK, there are many chargers around the bigger cities, but in the countryside there are next to none. Electric cars are not yet the future.

This is a problem of different charging standards and new software, something that will work itself out as it has in the past with other new technologies. Eventually finding charging will be a non-issue as you'll be able to charge at traditional gas stations, your office park, your shopping mall, basically every time you park somewhere, making "going to fill up" unnecessary unless you go on a road trip.

      Road tripping in a non-Tesla EV is certainly not easy in most of the world - because you risk having experiences like this. Even though this experience is rare, it also feels easily avoidable and lazy, because there's no premature warnings and very little support. When your car breaks down you might not be discouraged because it'd be a rare experience and there's a decent support system in place to get you going if it happens - and that's not often the case with erroneous EV charging today, which is what I think is the worst part about it.
      Charging at home is a massive advantage to EV ownership though, and without it I don't think any A-B driver is at fault for dismissing EVs without further consideration. But the infrastructure is still expanding rapidly, and in a decade it'll be very easy to use for sure. It's just a question of when it becomes good enough for you. Charging time and planning is the biggest downside of EVs for sure, but there's also many advantages. And they'll tip the balance for people as soon as infrastructure is good enough for their use cases.

      Couldn't agree more. I get "yelled" at often for simply saying "this won't work for me, sorry". I live in the western US. 100s of miles is a "normal" trip, often in freezing weather, and sparsely populated (no charging points) to boot. Plus, I really don't like the smugness of the "better for the environment" part of the EV argument. The mining necessary to make the batteries is extremely harmful to the environment. And there is no real recycling program aside from a handful of companies. We are simply substituting one non-renewable resource (oil) for another (cobalt, lithium, etc). Until the daily experience of owning and driving an EV is "better" (meaning easier, more convenient) they will be expensive grocery-getters for wealthy, home-owning, suburbanites.

      No one has looked at the elephant in the kitchen here, what happens when your battery has seen its best days long gone and needs a replacement. The present price I am not 100% sure of but I believe it’s around £3000 per battery and an sure high end cars will be much more expensive! Then the other huge problem, disposal, what’s going to happen to all these large Lumps of mixed harmful materials needing to be disposed of very carefully? In the future no doubt they will be easily restored to full working order again.
      You can use the argument about climate change until yoir blue in the face but for me it just doesn’t work

    • @siraff4461
      @siraff4461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@davidcorbett62 The other part to that is while all the fanboys claim the batteries will last until the end of time, thats really not whats happening in reality. If you crawl along they last just fine (unless you're in a hot climate in certain cars) but if you ask much work from them they really don't. My first Leaf had a replacement under warranty then my second was at 77% state of health when I got rid at two years old. My Zoe was at 82% at two years and 19,000 miles then my model S was heading down at a rate of knots until I got sick of it falling to bits and sent it back.
      I'm not particularly hard on the cars but I don't stick to charging it just before I go out and crawling along with the heater off either. I just use them as a car. That seems to be a problem for too many of them.

    • @davidcorbett62
      @davidcorbett62 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@siraff4461 yep. Agree to all. I know Jaguar are giving a 10 year warranty with their batteries in the I Pace but unlikely they will reach that maturity before failing.
      Yes battery operated cars have came a long way in the last 5 years but it’s going to take at least another 5 before they have any decent range or reduction in weight. Basically the car where rushed into service before they or the infrastructure was anywhere near ready, so today’s buyer of the very overpriced cars are basically test monkeys for the whole battery car system for both the manufacture and charging systems through out the country, what should have happened was the opposite, firstly a nationwide multiple Ie approx system every 10 miles. The cars to be substantially cheaper £10,000 in many cases, just to get the motorist interested and the system perfected. Instead he have cars priced out of the market for the average motorist and a hotch potch of charging stations either too few or not working. You can of course buy a very expensive Tesla who have provided many charging stations but which only charge their cars, that should be changed to allow any motorist to use them
      To me they are too expensive brought to the market far to quickly, are very dangerous in a collision due to their readiness to burst into flames and reliability is still to be proven. So I will hold onto my V8 for a while yet and to those souls who wish to castigate me over that decision firstly research what the various part are made from and how they are mined, them work out roughly if the UK where completely devoid of any petrol/diesel vehicles on its roads, how much it would actually mean to the worlds greenhouse gases? Think you will find it won’t make the slightest difference, because while we sit happy and smiling proud of our achievement, China will be pouring out more chemicals into the air than we ever did. Never ever follow what w politician thinks is a good idea because 1. He/she usually has their sums totally wrong 2. They will have a hand deeply into the wad of money made from any new technology.

I changed the position of the car and it worked after that. Another hint for you: if you want to charge on a fast charger like Ionity, set it as a navigation-target, so that the car knows about it an can preheat the battery for faster charging speed (alternativly you can switch into Sport Plus Mode, this should warm up the battery too).
