I think the biggest issue I have with the music is it's just so weird hearing high-quality CD audio music while the sound effects are bit-crushed to hell and back.

When Geese cancelled deadly rave into another mixup, my mind was blown.
I don't even know if it was a mixup because the combo counter didn't reset but that was still nuts, either way. I knew you could do something similar in CvS2, but I certainly didn't expect a CPU to do something like that.

With Terry Bogard out in Smash, one would think the Terry Legacy would've been over then and there! Fortunately, Max has decided to continue the Legacy despite Terry's arrival to Smash~ To be honest, ending the legacy on Maximum Impact 2 would've left me mildly disappointed. ^^;
But here's Wild Ambition, the remake/retelling of Fatal Fury 1! Along with my facts on it~
- Despite this game being a remake/retelling of FF1's events, this game does NOT replace the original events of Fatal Fury 1 as the 15th anniversary "movie", Memories of Stray Wolves, shows. It's just that FF1 shows events that Wild Ambition doesn't show and vice versa. However, the fact that other characters like Richard Meyer, Michael Max, Tung Fu Rue, Duck King (original version of Wild Ambition at least, more on that below), and Hwa Jai aren't in this remake but are mentioned and/or seen in the 15th Anniversary "movie" suggests that the events of Fatal Fury 1 still sorta happen despite the absence of the original participants of the '91 addition of the King of Fighters tournament. The major change is that Geese doesn't "die" at the end but is merely defeated. Other than that, the canon entries in the series are not altered by this remake's events.
- This game was originally released on the Hyper Neo Geo 64, a system made to compete with the likes of the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation. This was made to be the successor to the Neo Geo MVS and was released in 1997...only to be discontinued in 1999. The game only has seven games but the noteworthy ones include Wild Ambition, Samurai Shodown 64 and Samurai Shodown 64: Warrior's Rage, and Buriki One (the offshoot series to Art of Fighting); the latter of which is the last game to the system.
- The gameplay is loosely based on Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 with some new additions here and there. Such additions include the following:
. Heat Meter = You fill the meter by attacking or taunting. Taking damage decreases the gauge. If the meter is too low, you'll get into the "Danger" state but once it's filled you get the "MAX OK" status.
. Guard Impact = More or less the Just Defend system from Garou: MOTW... Though this game came before MOTW, did you know~?
. Heat Blow = High risk, high reward. It's unblockable and if it connects, it'll either stun or knock your opponent in the air. You can only use it once your Heat Meter is filled and using this will put you in the "Danger" state of your Heat Meter.
. Overdrive Power = More or less the super moves. Once your Heat Meter is filled, you use this super move. Just like Heat Blow, you'll be put into the "Danger" state of your Heat Meter once you use it.
Got all that? Great~! There's far more than that, but I'm not here to completely teach you how to play this game~
- As a remake of Fatal Fury 1, this game includes characters from future games such as Mai Shiranui, Ryuji Yamazaki, Kim Kaphwan, Li Xiangfei and characters exclusive to this game, Tsugumi Sendo and Touji Sakata. Raiden is also in this game though his look appears to be a somewhat blend between Raiden and Big Bear evidenced by his beard from his Big Bear persona appearing in his Raiden persona. This is also seen in the CVS games too.
- The PS1 version has secret characters in the form of Duck King and the famous Mr. Karate II. He is Ryo Sakazaki but older, wiser, and a full-on master of the Kyoukgen Karate martial art, following his father's footsteps closely. Mr. Karate II (Ryo) actually appeared in Buriki One.
- Li Xiangfei is a secret character in the original Hyper Neo Geo 64 version but a default character in the PS1 version.
- Billy Kane's appearance in this game is based on his Real Bout Fatal Fury look (a look that would be widely associated with him).
- Touji Sakata, the newcomer of this game, is the rival of Tatsumi Suou who is the grandfather to Blue Mary and Geese Howard's master (possibly after he left Tung Fu Rue?). This is evidenced by the fact that Touji actually has similar fighting style as Geese.
- Tsugumi Sendo, another newcomer, is a simple exchange student who has the shoot wrestling fighting style. She went to Southtown because she knew it was a place filled with criminals and fighters.
- Tsugumi appears in KOF 2002 UM in the background of the Italy Stage...alongside Touji and resident FF pervert, Jubei (not to be mistaken with Jubei from Samurai Shodown or Jubei from BlazBlue lol). During the rounds, Touji and Jubei will get into a fight (because Jubei was looking at Tsugumi in her swimsuit) that lasts a couple of rounds. After a while, they stop, being tuckered out.
- The PS1 version doesn't play the full tracks to the character themes so they abruptly fade out in the game. The characters have much longer themes and similar to Garou: Mark of the Wolves, an arranged soundtrack exists though like MOTW the themes aren't majorly arranged. Merely "higher produced" tracks.
- Geese's look in the opening movie is based on his younger self as seen in Art of Fighting 2.
- Terry's theme song is 11th Street. It is remixed in King of Fighters '99 as 176th Street (my preferred version admittedly) and sort of in KOF 2000 as Terry 115, but is rearranged in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate~!
- The artist behind the character artwork is Hiroaki, better known for his artwork for King of Fighters XI and King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match. Strangely, the character artwork is different than the character select artwork. Compare Yamazaki's full artwork to his character select artwork. Look at his FACE. XD (But the full character art of him looks pretty badass, but I'm biased lol)
Uhhh, that's it! I'm not gonna lie this game is sorta there and there's not a whole lot for me to say. ^^; I'll have more to say in the other games for sure! He has KOF XIII and KOF XIV on the horizon~

the thing with toji is if he turns his back to you and then attacks he actually does more damage that combined with his shortness actually made him be considered top tier by alot of pros of this fatal fury he was considered so good they actually took the very rare step of banning him in most tourney rule sets for a short amount of time
Toji dont need be baned. The lacks distance. His S punch is slow. The punch combo with square must connect very close. He dont have low kick counter. The only one that could be banned is Geese. The best char by far. His low kick counter stuns always. Lol
Other that could be banned is Andy. The can combo his super Sho Repaddan starting combo with fast kick. He is very fast and have lot of combo setups like geese. Toji is fast to avoid attacks by jumping but this command grabs lacks distance.

Aww man I loved Wild Ambition back in the day. It plays like a 3-D Real Bout series game. The supers in this one were always so hype and I loved the music. Me and my brother spent all day one time winning with every single character just to unlock Duck King. And yea Geese was definitely an asshole in this one. He was actually harder than the secret final boss fight with Mr. Karate to me.

This is exactly after AoF2 special ending with Geese’s even dressed the same way he is shown in Wild Ambition backstory movie. Which makes Terry and Andy exactly 10 years younger than Ryo and Robert.
14. Terry is 10 years younger than Yuri, while Ryo. Robert and King are all 4 years older than her...and Geese is just 4 years older than them.
What if Terry only started dressing like that again years later to make sure Geese recognized him?
If you want to see more about the child Terry and Andy I recomend to watch the OVA's back from the days, it was a master piece.

@@MasterofPlay7 It was originally released on SNK's Hyper NeoGeo 64 arcade machine, then ported to PlayStation. The PSX port is apparently downscaled compared to the arcade original, but HNG64 is notoriously hard to emulate and original arcade machines/boards are hard to get. Not really worth it for a one-off video.
@@sofija1996 If you search for Wild Ambition Hyper 64 on TH-cam you can find good footage of the original arcade version. While the 3D models don't look too much better it's still sharper, seems to play faster with a better frame rate, has animated backgrounds and the sound effects aren't compressed into incomprehension.
A lot of fighting games got some rough PS1 ports back then.

This was Tsugumi's one & only fighting game appearance, she was also in the games SNK VS Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash 1 & 2 which are 'collect-em all' style games.
She also appears in KOF 2002 UM, as a stage cameo, along with Toji

Its crazy to me looking back at games like this that we all thought this was a step up from the beautiful backgrounds and sprites we had before. Time makes fools of us all
Know what's sad? if you look at KOF 13 and 14 things haven't changed much. I think 13 is like THE most gorgeous 2D game ever made and 14...well
Ehh, even back then I didn’t think it was a step up, this game has never looked great, lol. I still liked it tho, it was fun. But yea I know what you mean tho, in general we all thought 2-D hand drawn sprites were “outdated” and “old” and that 3-D was automatically better. It was the new hot thing, everything during the mid to late 90’s was about how many polygons a game had. Looking back now 3-D games in the PS1/Saturn/N64 era look rough nowadays, it wasn’t until the Dreamcast that 3-D started to really look good.
Felipe Aguena KOF 13 is one of the most beautiful 2-D fighting games ever man. It was such a let down when KOF 14 came out looking like it did. I get it tho, KOF 13 was really time consuming and expensive to make but damn it was worth it imo. I’d kill for KOF 15 to go back to beautiful 2-D sprites like that but sadly I know that’s not going to be the case, well I at least hope it comes out looking better than 14, which it should.
Oh this is the game where that opening cutscene came from, I have seen it before and always liked the late ninety’s/early 2000’s early of CG cutscenes.

Aaaaah, Wild Ambition. Easily one of the toughest Geese boss fights around, and one of the best boss themes too. Glad to see that Max played this game

I love the art in this. I think this is mostly Hiroaki's work. He did the main/promo art for Buriki One, KOFXI, KOF98UM, KOF2002UM, and those Fatal Fury pachinko games.
Terry's father last gesture was to get his son the cap and put it on his head... and Terry honors that by throwing it away everytime he beats down some noob. That's not what your father wanted, Terry!
The music starting from 9:21 is some real Terry Legacy stuff.

The Back Story was pretty neat. Geese in this game is insane hehe. That ending tho lol.
This game gives me major Rival Schools vibes.
Ending aside, this was entertaining to watch.
