This is a “black label” Strat. Not sure what they were doing with the Squier name and label at the time, but my understanding of the model is that they were made in Mexico using Asian hardware and electronics and American made bodies and necks because there was a fire in a Mexican factory and so they used Asian and American stock. I got one this year and replaced the pick guard, electronics and pickups and it’s AWESOME. If you can find one at a good price it’s a Made in USA body and neck that’s a great mod platform.

The giveaway is the truss rod opening. American Fender necks have a walnut insert and these had a plastic or nylon one. It's how you know it's a Mexican neck. The wood they sent were blanks, meaning it was still cut and shaped in Mexico. Fender was just looking to make a cheaper guitar to compete with the Asian import market. Fire or not, Fender was already going to put these into production.

It''s probably already been said, but that guitar is not a "Squier", as in the Squier brand. It is a Fender "Squier Series", different animal. Look up the history. I have two, great necks and bodies. One I left stock, the other I upgraded the trem block, pots and pups ((Texas Specials). Great playing guitar, a keeper for me. Another nice thing about these is that most people think they are "just" Squies and sell them accordingly. Think I paid $150 for one and $180 for the other. I am happy.

@mspraggins....''most people think they are "just" Squies'' (squiers)....cause the are just Squiers...just that they are made in a real Fender plant by Fender employees...but just a cheap ass Squier with cheapo hardware....

@@mark006868Except it says Fender in big letters. What it is is a lower end Mexican Fender, with cheaper Asian electronics. The best part is, they are perfect mod platforms. Upgrade to better parts and you have a hotrodded cheap guitar with a Fender logo on it, and you aren't worried about messing up a valueable instrument.

I have this exact same guitar, same color, a 95 as well. it was my first guitar, I got it from a pawn shop in 2004 for $150.
I replaced everything on it over the years (I still have the original parts in a box), except the pickguard (and the body and neck, of course).
Got a set of pre-wired DG-20s, replaced the bridge with a MIM Fender Vintage style, full sized trem block, got some gotoh vintage tuners, tusq nut, modern Fender string tree, even the neckplate was replaced. The only thing I want to do now is a fret replacement.
I know the pickups alone are more expensive than the guitar itself, but it has sentimental value for me and I'm never going to sell it (I'm not sanding that "Squier Series" logo either, which a lot of people do)

    • @Win7ermu7e
      @Win7ermu7e 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Me too! Well mine's a black 95. I changed the pickguard to triple ply black, put in black Wilkinson pups, black witch-hats and switch, and hard-tailed it. Great guitar man. Never sell it. And just to be cheeky I put a "Corona California" backplate on it.

My son and I have had two rosewood face Indy Cort Squiers; 2000 red, 2004 elecrtic blue. Swapouts; CTS pots, NON-LOCKING 18:1 Grovers, "roller" trees, WBW perloid pickguards & back cover. Red 2000 always played sharp 'till i custom wedged the neck angle, thus increasing the scale length.
Although it may restrict aftermarket trem block options, I very much prefer the thinner body, even though the cork sniffer crowd contend that, "there is less sustain."
Having two nearly identical Strats gives me the unique ability to go back and forth between them, applying setup, maintenance science and art to a nearly infinite degree, resulting in two BEAUTIFUL, and oustandingly well-playing Strats which PROUDLY display their INDONESIAN CORT labels. After all, the best guitar is the one which is beautiful, well-made, well-set-up and PLAYS best.
I feel sorry for the poor schlump who pays 3-5 times as much for.a "REAL" strat, only to imress the World with the "CORRECT" headstock sticker, yet hasn't the slightest clue about setup.

David Gilmour's "Black Strat" had the springs set up the way you don't like them. ;) As you depress the trem bar the middle spring does become a little stretched. So maybe it's like 2 1/2 springs set up that way as it's used.

Totally agree RE spring tension comments, crazy the angled 3-spring config is Fender spec, it's just wrong, missed the part in the vid where vintage 6-screw bridge was checked, this can affect trem action if screwed improperly, usually outer screws are less than flush-ish and inner 4 are mostly decorative with approximately 1/2 turn unscrewed, provides for less friction on trem action, I'd check and lube the nut too

That guitar most likely, unless someone did 'an upgrade!', have Ceramic magnet pickups. So don't follow the Alnico pickup height setup guidelines as Ceramic magnets are stronger than Alnico and won't sound as sweet unless lower. Old videos of Jimi Hendrix shows he set his pickups low and raised the bass side slightly higher than the treble side, but what did he know.

Agreed. I have one and it’s an awesome guitar. Replaced the electronics with custom shop and good pots, switch, Jack, plays great. These were MIM with cheap electronics from Asia and American necks and bodies because one of the Mexican factories burned, so they used available stock. I built myself basically an American Strat for about $400 all-in!

Can I ask what may be a dumb question, but why do you guys across the pond say 4/64 ? Isn’t that just 1/16? . I find metric much simpler, just an observation.
Having said all that, we still mostly go miles not kilometres in the UK 😆

Bought a brand new MIM . 2006. What a POS. Would not stay in tune. Wasn't going to take it back to Guitar Center cause their tecks. I didn't trust. I knew the problem anyway. Not enough wood. On the CUTOUT side of the body. Loose neck back & forth. No Stevie Ray for this strat. Finally took off neck which voided any warranty. No wonder . Looked like it was routed for a TELE neck & they overshot both sides of the pocket with a 1/2 inch router bit at the back of the pocket. I had to do major body work & touch up paint too as the finish around neck pocket peeled off in STRIPS.Will still need steel dowels in bottom of neck through bottom of body. I got pissed off & put it on back burner Until recently.
