My first responsibility in the FD was to work the radio room. I was 17, and had to learn every procedure there was. It's a very important job; especially before computers when dispatchers kept everything in their head. Not an easy job, takes a speacial person. This gentleman clearly had what it took. To do that job that long would drive most of the edge. So many lives in his hands is a tremendous responsibility.

This firefighter worked as dispatcher in the 70's and 80's which are known as the "war years" for the amount of fires in old structures
He wasn't a Firefighter.. He was Fire Patrol then a Fire Alarm Dispatcher

I feel ya on that one. I would pinch hit in dispatch during our "war years" in the 80's. It was card files, note pads and your memory.

43 years? My god, I did 30 years in a NJ police/fire/EMS dispatch center before I retired. No way could I imagine doing another 13 years! Lol!
He also apart of the fire patrol before becoming a dispatcher.
